An Automated Blood Flow Restriction Device Is Reliable, but Not Valid, for Determining Lower Limb Occlusion Pressure in Resistance-trained Adults.

Lang, D, Fallo, X, and Bennett, H. An automated blood flow restriction device is reliable, but not valid, for determining lower limb occlusion pressure in resistance-trained adults. J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2026-Blood flow restriction (BFR) exercise can improve strength, hypertrophy, and aerobic performance. Accurate limb occlusion pressure (LOP) assessment is essential for safe prescription. The AirBands is a novel automated BFR device that estimates LOP using integrated sensors, making LOP assessment easier. However, its validity and reliability are not well established in resista

Reach Out Emergency Department: A Randomized Factorial Trial to Determine the Optimal Mobile Health Components to Reduce Blood Pressure.

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) strategies initiated in safety-net Emergency Departments may be one approach to address the US hypertension epidemic, but the optimal mHealth components or dose are unknown. METHODS: Reach Out is an mHealth, health theory-based, 2×2×2 factorial trial among hypertensive patients evaluated in a safety-net Emergency Department in Flint, Michigan. Reach Out consisted of 3 mHealth components, each with 2 doses: (1) healthy behavior text messaging (yes versus no), (2) prompted self-measured blood pressure (BP) monitoring and feedback (weekly versus daily), and (3

Genetic determinants of blood pressure traits are associated with carotid arterial thickening and plaque formation in patients with type 2 diabetes.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to explore the contribution of genetically driven cardiometabolic risk factors for development of carotid arterial thickening in patients with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: In total, 12 genetic risk scores for blood pressure, blood lipids and glycaemic traits were constructed. The genetic risk scores were tested for association with carotid intima-media thickness and plaques in patients with type 2 diabetes ( n = 401) and in non-diabetic individuals ( n = 648) and for association with glucose levels in two population-based cohorts ( n = 1328 and n = 6161). Visit-to-visit blood pressure variations: new independent determinants for cognitive function in the elderly at high risk of cardiovascular disease.

OBJECTIVE: Recently, visit-to-visit blood pressure (BP) variability has been shown to be associated with silent cerebral injury and stroke. However, the relationships between visit-to-visit BP variation and cognitive function are not clear. METHODS: The cognitive function was evaluated using a mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and global deterioration scale (GDS) in 201 elderly patients at high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) (79.9 ± 6.4 years old; women 75%). Based on 12 visits (once a month), visit-to-visit BP variability (expressed as the SD and coefficient of variation), maximum B

Effect of age and blood pressure on determination of normal fluid status in a general population using whole body and calf bioimpedance techniques.

Normal fluid status (dry weight) can be identified by hydration markers established in the healthy population. The general population average could be influenced by age with its accompanying physiological changes and/or illness. The aims of this study were (1) to evaluate the effect of age and systolic blood pressure (SBP) on these markers; (2) to compare mean values of hydration markers as assessed by different bioimpedance techniques. Subjects from the general population (n  =  212, males 105, 57.1% White, 31.6% Black, and 11.3% others) were studied. Body weight, height and SBP were measured

Racial ethnic variations in the cardiometabolic determinants and blood pressure of white matter hyperintensities among females-The HABS-HD Study.

INTRODUCTION: White matter hyperintensity volume (WMH), markers of cerebral small vessel disease, are disproportionately prevalent among Black/African American and Hispanic individuals. While cardiometabolic risk factors contribute to WMHs, their association across racial ethnic groups among females remains unclear. This study examines associations among cardiometabolic risk factors, blood pressure, and WMH volume in non-Hispanic White (NHW), non-Hispanic Black (NHB), and Hispanic females. METHODS: Using the Health and Aging Brain Study Health Disparities (HABS-HD) cross-sectional visit 1 dat

Genetically determined blood pressure, antihypertensive medications, and risk of intracranial aneurysms and aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage: A Mendelian randomization study.

INTRODUCTION: Observational studies suggest that different classes of antihypertensive drugs may have different effects on the occurrence of intracranial aneurysms (IA) and subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). However, the reported results in previous studies are inconsistent, and randomized data are absent. We performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to study the causal effects of genetically determined blood pressure (BP) and genetic proxies for antihypertensive drug classes on the risk of IA and SAH. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Genetic instruments and outcome data were obtained fr

Determining the Effects of Combined Liraglutide and Phentermine on Metabolic Parameters, Blood Pressure, and Heart Rate in Lean and Obese Male Mice.

Liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, and phentermine, a psychostimulant structurally related to amphetamine, are drugs approved for the treatment of obesity and hyperphagia. There is significant interest in combination use of liraglutide and phentermine for weight loss; however, both drugs have been reported to induce systemic hemodynamic changes, and as such the therapeutic window for this drug combination needs to be determined. To understand their impact on metabolic and cardiovascular physiology, we tested the effects of these drugs alone and in combination for

Use of machine-learning algorithms to determine features of systolic blood pressure variability that predict poor outcomes in hypertensive patients.

BACKGROUND: We re-analyzed data from the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT) trial to identify features of systolic blood pressure (SBP) variability that portend poor cardiovascular outcomes using a nonlinear machine-learning algorithm. METHODS: We included all patients who completed 1 year of the study without reaching any primary endpoint during the first year, specifically: myocardial infarction, other acute coronary syndromes, stroke, heart failure or death from a cardiovascular event (n = 8799; 94%). In addition to clinical variables, features representing longitudinal SB

Determinants of Progression in Early Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease: Is it Blood Pressure or Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone-System Blockade?

BACKGROUND: The HALT PKD trial in early autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) showed that intensive control of systolic blood pressure to 95-110 mmHg was associated with a 14% slower rate of kidney volume growth compared to standard control. It is unclear whether this result was due to greater blockade of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) by allowing the use of higher drug doses in the low blood pressure arm, or due to the lower blood pressure per se. METHODS: In this secondary analysis of HALT PKD Study A, we categorized participants into high and low dose groups

The major determinants of arterial stiffness in Korean patients with rheumatoid arthritis are age and systolic blood pressure, not disease-related factors.

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis are at increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of peripheral arterial disease, and to identify factors, especially those related to rheumatoid arthritis, influencing arterial stiffness in Korean patients with rheumatoid arthritis. A total of 262 patients with rheumatoid arthritis managed in a tertiary clinic were included. Ankle-brachial index and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity were measured. Rheumatoid arthritis-related factors were determined, as well as the traditional cardiovasc

Assessment of photoplethysmography-based blood pressure determinations during long-term and short-term remote cardiac monitoring: the RECAMO study.

AIMS: Cardiovascular diseases are a global health crisis, with hypertension as a significant risk factor. Traditional cuff-based blood pressure measurements have various limitations, prompting the exploration of photoplethysmography as an alternative for continuous monitoring. This study aimed to assess a cuff-calibrated wrist-worn photoplethysmography-based blood pressure device against European Society of Hypertension recommendations. METHODS AND RESULTS: The study assessed photoplethysmography-based blood pressure measurement stability over 28 days in 150 patients by comparing measurements

Change in pressor responsiveness to angiotensin II as a determinant of blood pressure after unclipping in two-kidney, one clip hypertensive rats.

The hypotensive effect of correction of renal artery stenosis in humans or experimental animals with renovascular hypertension is commonly attributed to decreasing renin secretion from the formerly stenotic kidney. However, plasma renin activity is normal in 50% of individuals with renovascular hypertension. We studied conscious, chronically instrumented two-kidney, one clip (2K1C) rats. The renal artery clip was removed and mean arterial pressure measured for 3 days. The majority of the fall in blood pressure occurred between 2 and 48 hours after unclipping. Measurement of water balance and u

The determinants and prognostic significance of serum uric acid in elderly patients of the European Working Party on High Blood Pressure in the Elderly trial.

Determinants and risks associated with serum uric acid were investigated in 822 elderly hypertensive patients treated with hydrochlorothiazide and triamterene or placebo. Pretreatment serum uric acid levels were significantly higher in men than in women and had positive correlation with serum creatinine. After adjustment for serum creatinine, positive correlations of serum uric acid with body weight and fasting blood glucose in women and with serum cholesterol in men were significant. During follow-up, serum uric acid increased significantly in the treated patients, but remained unchanged in t

Prevalence and Determinants of Abnormal Ambulatory Blood Pressure and Circadian Patterns Among Adults in Ido Ekiti, Nigeria: A Community-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is the leading cause of global cardiovascular diseases and deaths, but its management remains poor in sub-Saharan Africa. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) provides more detailed information on variations in blood pressure during the day and circadian patterns than office measurements. Unfortunately, there is a paucity of information regarding ABPM patterns among Nigerian adults. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and circadian patterns of abnormal ambulatory blood pressure, as well as to identify sociodemographic, anthropometric and lifestyle predictors
