Plasma volume and blood pressure regulation in hypertensive pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Pre-eclampsia is a multisystem disorder, peculiar to and frequent in human pregnancy. It remains a leading cause of maternal and … changes take place. A generalized fall in vascular tone by systemic vasorelaxation causes increased blood volume, heart rate and cardiac output. In the preclinical phase, differences have been observed between normal and hypertensive pregnancies in the function of the autonomic nervous system, cardiac output and plasma volume, the volume remaining at the non-p …

Factors affecting the volume of umbilical cord blood collections.

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to find factors that may help increase the number of the HSC (CD34+) collected from umbilical cord blood for transplantation. STUDY DESIGN: We assessed the effect of cesarean sections and vaginal deliveries on the volume of the umbilical cord blood collected from 155 healthy term neonates retrospectively. RESULTS: The volume of umbilical cord blood obtained in 29 cesarean deliveries was 103.9 +/- 33.6 ml compared with 84.2 +/- 25.3 ml collected in 126 vaginal deliveries. Although the percentage of CD34+ cells was comparable in both groups, the absolute number of CD

Pulse oximetry plethysmographic waveform during changes in blood volume.

Systolic pressure variation (SPV) and its dDown component have been shown to be sensitive factors in estimating intravascular volume in patients undergoing mechanical ventilation. In this study, ventilation-induced changes in pulse oximeter plethysmographic waveform were evaluated after removal and after reinfusion of 10% estimated blood volume. The plethysmographic waveform variation (SPVplet) was measured as the difference between maximal and minimal peaks of waveform during the ventilatory cycle, and expressed as a percentage of the signal amplitude during apnoea. dUp(plet) and dDown(plet) …

Volume of blood required to detect common neonatal pathogens.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the minimum volume of blood and the absolute number of organisms required for detection of bacteremia and fungemia by an automated colorimetric blood culture system (BacT/Alert, Organon Teknika). DESIGN: Common neonatal pathogens, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus (GBS): one American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) strain and one clinical isolate), Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Candida albicans, were seeded into blood to produce bacteremia or fungemia with low colony counts (1 to 3 colony-forming units (CFU) per milliliter) and ultra-lo

Administering, documenting, and tracking blood products and volume expanders.

A quality improvement program designed to facilitate the administration, tracking, and documentation of blood products and volume expanders resulted in improved patient safety, improved efficiency, more accurate documentation, and enhanced resource management. Key to the success of the program were the Transfusion Administration Record, the blood product administration guide, and on-line transfusion history recording.

Sodium chloride, extracellular fluid volume, and blood pressure regulation.

Data from humans and experimental animals indicate that hypertensive diseases triggered by extracellular fluid volume expansion are characterized, in their chronic phases, by relatively normal blood volume (BV) and heightened pressure-volume relationship may be viewed as corresponding to a condition of "virtual hypervolemia," where BV is inappropriately "high" relative to blood pressure. The limited data available on the phasic relationship between these variables indicate that the BV expansion appears to be a prerequisite to alterations in vascular ion metabolism, that both of these changes p…

Radionuclide determined pulmonary blood volume in ischaemic heart disease.

Most measurements of pulmonary blood volume have been based on the Stewart-Hamilton dye dilution principle and have required direct catheterisation of the cardiac chambers. Alternatively a precordial counter may be used to detect the composite right and left heart curves after an intravenous injection of radionuclide. We investigated the use of a gamma camera/computer system to determine the radionuclide dilution curves from individual cardiac chambers. Pulmonary transit time and pulmonary blood volume were measured in nine normal subjects, eight patients with angina pectoris but without heart…

Blood volume partition after acute cholestasis in the rat.

A method involving isotope labelling of blood components and then rapid freezing of intact rats, was used for evaluation of the blood content in liver, spleen and gastrointestinal (GI) tract in cholestatic animals. For comparison also another important blood depot, i.e. the lungs were examined. After 4 days of cholestasis the animals were hypovolemic, however, the partition of blood in the liver and GI tract was unchanged or even increased. In contrast the lung blood volume and the erythrocyte content of the spleen were markedly reduced. Three days later the animals had regained their normal b…

[The effect of glycerol on regional cerebral blood flow, blood volume and oxygen metabolism].

Using positron emission tomography with 15O-labelled CO2 O2 and CO gases, the effects of glycerol on regional cerebral blood flow (CBF), blood volume (CBV) and oxygen metabolism (CMRO2) were investigated in 6 patients with meningioma accompanying peritumoral brain edema. The same study was done in 5 normal volunteers. The changes of blood gases, hematocrit and hemoglobin were also examined. After a drip infusion of glycerol, the regional CBF increased not only in the peritumoral cortex and white matter but also in the intact cortex and white matter on the contralateral side. The increase of CB…
