Forces exerted during exercises by patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis wearing fiberglass braces.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify and compare the forces exerted by scoliosis patients in fiberglass braces during exercises usually prescribed in departments where casts are made. The exercises are intended to increase corrective forces, activate muscles, stimulate ventilation and help the patient psychologically. SETTING: Outpatient care. PATIENTS: 17 consecutive adolescent patients wearing fiberglass brace for idiopathic scoliosis. INTERVENTIONS: Exercises (kyphotization, rotation, "escape from the pad") in different positions (sitting, supine, on all fours). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Pressure detecte…

The effect of ankle braces on the prevention of dynamic forced ankle inversion.

BACKGROUND: Athletes often employ prophylactic braces to reduce the risk of ankle injuries. HYPOTHESIS: Ankle braces do not significantly decrease the risk of forced inversion on a standardized one-footed jump landing. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: Fourteen healthy men with a mean age of 25.1 years were tested. Three braces, two semirigid (Aircast and Bledsoe) and one lace-up (Swede-O), were fitted to each subject. Forced dynamic ankle inversion of 24 degrees was to be resisted as the subjects landed on one foot with a force of two body weights on a stimulus presented …

Ankle sprain prophylaxis: an analysis of the stabilizing effects of braces and tape.

Five cadaveric ankles were used to determine the effects of prophylactic bracing and tape on resisting an inversion moment applied to the ankle. The ankles were tested in neutral flexion and 30 degrees of plantar flexion and with both low- and high-top shoes. Eight different strap-on braces were studied. High-top sneakers significantly increased the passive resistance to inversion afforded by all braces and tape. Many of the braces functioned to resist inversion at a level that was comparable with or exceeded the capability of freshly applied tape. This finding was independent of the type of f…

Why Some Braces "Work" Beyond Cobb Angle Correction: Hidden Dimensions of Treatment Effect.

The Cobb angle remains the primary radiographic parameter for the assessment and management of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), although it does not fully capture the multidimensional nature of the deformity or the broader impact of treatment. This narrative review aims to explore the mechanisms underlying brace effectiveness beyond coronal plane correction. Available evidence suggests that, in addition to three-dimensional structural correction, bracing may be associated with changes in postural control and sensorimotor function, likely related to altered loading conditions and sustaine

Evaluation the Efficiency of Braces for Degenerative Scoliosis: A Systematic Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND: Degenerative scoliosis is a progressive side-to-side deformity of the spine that is common in mature individuals, characterized by a Cobb angle of >10°. Current treatment options vary and can be categorized as conservative or non-conservative (surgery), with the primary goal of pain reduction. However, there is conflicting evidence regarding which treatment option is most effective. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of braces in this group of subjects. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embas…

The effect of knee braces on knee joint kinematics at different exercise speeds.

This study aims to investigate the influence of a new semi-rigid knee joint braces on kinematics using the Opti-knee knee joint kinematic analysis system at various exercise speeds. Twenty-four healthy young male adults were recruited for this study. Participants were randomly assessed while wearing and not wearing knee brace at four different speeds on a treadmill: normal walking (3.6 km/h), brisk walking (5.4 km/h), jogging (9 km/h), and moderate intensity running (10.8 km/h). Six degrees of freedom kinematic data from the knee joint were collected. Paired t-tests were conducted to calculate…

Effect of ankle braces on lower extremity joint energetics in single-leg landings.

PURPOSE: Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries in competitive and recreational athletics. Studies have shown that the use of prophylactic ankle braces effectively reduces the frequency of ankle sprains in athletes. However, although it is generally accepted that the ankle braces are effective at reducing frontal plane motion, some researchers report that the design of the brace may also reduce ankle sagittal plane motion. The purpose of this study was to quantify lower extremity joint contributions to energy absorption during single-legged drop landings in three ankle brace conditi…

An in vitro dynamic evaluation of prophylactic knee braces during lateral impact loading.

To determine the ability of prophylactic knee braces to reduce or limit medial collateral and anterior cruciate ligament elongation under dynamic loading conditions, we used cadaveric specimens that had a surrogate soft tissue material that matched the tissue compliance of in vivo contracted muscles. Eight cadaveric specimens were fitted with four prophylactic knee braces and instrumented with Hall Effect Strain Transducers on both the medial collateral and anterior cruciate ligament. Each specimen was mounted in a testing frame while a lateral impact was applied to the knee joint by a pendulu…

Brace yourself (Part-time): part-time bracing leads to curve improvement in juvenile idiopathic scoliosis.

PURPOSE: The efficacy of bracing for juvenile idiopathic scoliosis (JIS) remains controversial. Although full-time bracing is standard for curves > 25°, part-time bracing for smaller curves (< 25°) may prevent progression. This study evaluates the effectiveness of part-time bracing compared to observation in JIS patients with 15-24° curves, hypothesizing that part-time bracing reduces curve progression and the need for full-time bracing. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study reviewed skeletally immature JIS patients (4-10 years old) with 15-24° curves. Patients underwent either observation

Isokinetic trunk muscle strength in braced vs non-braced adolescents with lumbar spondylolysis: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar spondylolysis is a common cause of lower back pain in adolescents and is often managed conservatively with trunk bracing. However, the effects of trunk bracing on trunk muscle strength remain unclear. This study aimed to compare isokinetic trunk muscle strength between patients with lumbar spondylolysis who wore a brace and those who did not during rehabilitation. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted on 20 adolescents diagnosed with lumbar spondylolysis. Participants were classified into a brace-wearing group (n = 10) and a non-brace-wearing group (n =

In-Brace versus Out-of-Brace Protocol for Radiographic Follow-Up of Patients with Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Retrospective Study.

The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare two standardized protocols for radiological follow-up (in-brace versus out-of-brace radiographs) to study the rate of curve progression over time in surgically treated idiopathic scoliosis (IS) patients after failed brace treatment. In-brace radiographs have the advantage that proper fit of the brace and in-brace correction can be evaluated. However, detection of progression might theoretically be more difficult. Fifty-one IS patients that underwent surgical treatment after failed brace treatment were included. For 25 patients, follow-up r
