Observations about declining fertility in a feline breeding colony.

Feline breeding colonies are important to the feline industry by preserving traits desirable for a particular breed or in research settings by maintaining medically valuable genetic traits. As breeding females age, their reproductive efficiency declines. The objective of this study was to determine the most common causes of infertility in breeding females that were producing fewer kittens. Knowing the cause and average age of infertility would allow management decisions to be made for the betterment of the colony. The medical records of 70 queens retired from breeding from a single research co…

Breeding options for nematode resistance in Lacaune dairy sheep.

Due to progressing anthelmintic resistance of gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN), supportive measures are needed to control these parasites. In sheep, it has been shown that selection towards an increased nematode resistance is feasible and that faecal egg count (FEC) is the generally acknowledged trait for selection. However, a selection based on FEC would come with certain costs, therefore auxiliary, cheaper resistance traits would be most welcome. FAMACHA©, a colour classification of the eyelid, usually used to determine the manifestation of an infection with Haemonchus contortus, could serve

Core Microbiome of Slovak Holstein Friesian Breeding Bulls' Semen.

Bacterial contamination of semen is an important factor connected to the health status of bulls that may significantly affect semen quality … ogether with the detection of noncultivable bacterial species. Fresh samples from Holstein Friesian breeding bulls (n = 55) were examined for the natural variability in the present bacteria. Semen doses were selected randomly from Slovak Biological Services in Nitra, Slovak Republic. The most predominant phyla within the whole dataset were Firmicutes (31%) …

Urospermia indicating ectopic ureters in breeding dogs - 3 cases.

An Entlebucher Mountain Dog (57 months old, case 1), a Labrador Retriever (24 months, case 2) and an Irish Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier (31 months old, case 3) were presented for breeding soundness evaluation to the clinic. During semen collection in all 3 dogs, the pre-secretion and the sperm-rich fraction showed normal consistency and colour, whereas the prostatic secretion (3 rd ejaculate fraction) appeared strikingly yellow. In cases 1 and 2, a severely decreased sperm motility (asthenozoospermia) and an increased amount of abnormal spermatozoa (teratozoospermia), and in case 3, a moderatel…

Molecular Prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. in Breeding Kennel Dogs.

Cryptosporidium is a common intestinal protozoan that can lead to diarrhea in humans and dogs. The predominant species of infection are C. hominis and C. parvum in humans, and C. canis in dogs. However, C. canis can infect immunocompromised humans. Considering the close contact with humans, dogs have the potential to be reservoirs for human cryptosporidiosis. Breeding kennels are the major supply source of puppies for pet shops. The present study is to determine the molecular prevalence and characteristics of Cryptosporidium spp. found in breeding kennel dogs. A total of 314 fecal samples were…

Obtaining healthy offspring from PRRSV-positive pig breeding herds.

In this study, we propose a possible way of obtaining reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) free offspring from genetically valuable lines of Přeštice black-pied boars com- ming from PRRSV-positive pig breeding herds with the use of artificial insemination (AI). The ejaculates were collected from 4 different lines of boars. Samples of fresh semen were not detected with the virus and 12 sows were inseminated. Blood samples of sows and their offspring were repeatedly tested for the virus but the results were negative. We managed in this way to maintain the endangered population of …

Molecular Breeding of Sorghum bicolor, A Novel Energy Crop.

Currently, molecular breeding is regarded as an important tool for the improvement of many crop species. However, in sorghum, recently heralded as an important bioenergy crop, progress in this field has been relatively slow and limited. In this review, we present existing efforts targeted at genetic characterization of sorghum mutants. We also comprehensively review the different attempts made toward the isolation of genes involved in agronomically important traits, including the dissection of some sorghum quantitative trait loci (QTLs). We also explore the current status of the use of transge…

Neuroendocrine regulation of gonadotropin secretion in seasonally breeding birds.

Seasonally breeding birds detect environmental signals, such as light, temperature, food availability, and presence of mates to time reproduction. Hypothalamic neurons integrate external and internal signals, and regulate reproduction by releasing neurohormones to the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland synthesizes and releases gonadotropins which in turn act on the gonads to stimulate gametogenesis and sex steroid secretion. Accordingly, how gonadotropin secretion is controlled by the hypothalamus is key to our understanding of the mechanisms of seasonal reproduction. A hypothalamic neuropep…

Odour-based kin discrimination in the cooperatively breeding meerkat.

Kin recognition is a useful ability for animals, facilitating cooperation among relatives and avoidance of excessive kin competition or inbreeding. In meerkats, Suricata suricatta, encounters between unfamiliar kin are relatively frequent, and kin recognition by phenotype matching is expected to avoid inbreeding with close relatives. Here, we investigate whether female meerkats are able to discriminate the scent of unfamiliar kin from unfamiliar non-kin. Dominant females were presented with anal gland secretion from unfamiliar individuals that varied in their relatedness. Our result indicates …

Pedigree analyses in the Breeding Program for Nellore Cattle.

Parameters based on the probability of gene origin were used to describe genetic variability in three reproductive groups from the Breeding Program for Nellore Cattle (PMGRN). The three reproductive populations (cows in reproductive age, bulls from artificial insemination centers and young bulls in progeny test) generated medium to low values. The effective number of founders (Nf ), the effective number of ancestors (Na) and the remaining genomes (Ng) suggest low founder representativeness, high genetic contribution by some ancestors, considerable loss of founder alleles and lack of allelic re…

Standardising bull breeding soundness evaluations and reporting in Australia.

There is substantial variation in bull breeding soundness evaluation procedures and reports in Australia; the situation is compounded by difficulties in interpretation and the validity of many reports. In an effort to overcome this, the scientific literature was reviewed [Fordyce G. In: Fordyce G, editor. Bull fertility: selection and management in Australia. Eight Mile Plains, Australia: Australian Cattle Vets; 2002] and the needs of stakeholders were considered in preparing a manual, Evaluating and Reporting Bull Fertility [Entwistle KW, Fordyce G. Evaluating and reporting bull fertility. Ei…

Selenium toxicity in breeding ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus).

A flock of breeding ring-necked pheasants received feed with a high selenium content. Within 4 days of eating the toxic feed, the rate of egg production began to decrease, and bird aggression increased. Approximately 12% of the hens died within a week. Necropsy of the hens revealed colorless fluid around the heart and a friable, but otherwise normal, liver. The rapid onset of the problem and signs noted at necropsy suggested toxicosis. Based on analysis, the feed contained 9.3 ppm of selenium. Selenium toxicity was consistent with the histologic diagnosis of degenerative cardiomyopathy, vacuol…

Chronic orthopaedic disease in adult male broiler breeding fowls.

An assessment has been made of spontaneous orthopaedic disease in 100 male broiler breeding fowls aged between 51 and 62 weeks. Lesions were identified in the pelvic limbs of 92 birds, 85 of which showed total or partial rupture of ligaments or tendons. Total ligament or tendon failure was identified at one or more skeletal sites in 54 birds. In two cases, avulsion of the femoral origin of the cranial tibial muscle had occurred. Other findings included degenerative changes in a number of joints but there was no correlation with ligament derangement. Partial or total detachment of the femoral h…

Breeding soundness examinations of rams and bucks, a review.

Breeding soundness examinations of rams and bucks may be performed by veterinarians as a service for clients. A physical examination for breeding soundness includes a general examination for health with special consideration of the reproductive organs. Careful examination of the penis, prepuce, and testicles may reveal diseases or abnormalities which decrease reproductive potential. Rams with small or hypoplastic testicles are unsatisfactory potential breeders as testicle size is positively related to sperm production. Libido may be assessed during semen collection procedures or from observati…

Breeding a pigmented strain of rats with tapetoretinal degeneration.

When Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) rats are bred with Wistar albinos the offspring are deeply pigmented and have normally functioning retinas. From this second generation, various breeding possibilities exist. In the course of successive cross-breedings one can obtain albinos, tan striped (RCS type) or pigmented animals, any one of which may be normal, carrier or affected. The skin pigmentation trait and that of retinal degeneration are independently inherited and follow autosomal recessive Mendelian laws. However normals for ERG studies vary with skin pigmentation. It is suggested that only…
