Computed tomography findings of tracheobronchial system diseases: a pictorial essay.

The diseases affecting the trachea and main bronchi can be categorized into congenital or acquired abnormalities and also into focal or diffuse diseases. Major congenital bronchial abnormalities cover accessory cardiac bronchus and tracheal bronchus. Tracheobronchial strictures, such as post-intubation and post-infectious stenosis and tracheobronchial neoplasms are regarded as focal diseases, whereas tracheobronchomegaly, relapsing polychondritis, tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica, amyloidosis, granulomatosis with polyangiitis, tracheobronchomalacia, saber-sheath trachea and tracheobro

Diagnostic and therapeutic approach to endobronchial metastases from extra-thoracic neoplasms: A report of three cases and brief review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Endobronchial metastases (EBMs) are rare, with primary tumours predominantly of breast, renal, and colorectal origin. Bronchoscopy is the diagnostic gold standard, with histological confirmation through immunohistochemical study. CASES: We presented three cases of EBMs, one secondary to colorectal cancer and two associated with renal tumours. EBM unveiled the extra-thoracic neoplasm in colorectal cancer and was incidentally discovered during renal cancer follow-up. Bronchoscopy revealed an obstructive endobronchial mass in two cases. Histological diagnosis was established via br

Bronchial adenoma mimicking complication of endotracheal intubation.

A 39-year-old Chinese lady was admitted to hospital for an emergency caesarian section under general anaesthesia. After intubation it was discovered that there was diminished air entry to the left side. The cause could not be elicited during anaesthesia and a postoperative chest radiograph revealed no abnormality. Subsequent tomography revealed a mass in the lumen of the left main bronchus. Biopsy of the lesion revealed an adenoid cystic carcinoma (bronchial adenoma-cylindroma type). By causing airway obstruction with gas trapping this rare neoplasm may present as the cause of a problem mimick

Neuroendocrine syndrome in bronchial carcinoid tumors.

Pulmonary carcinoid tumors represent bronchopulmonary neuroendocrine neoplasms which might synthetize serotonin, histamine, bombesin or other types of hormones responsible for the development of a broad spectrum of signs and symptoms, known as carcinoid syndrome. Data of 98 patients submitted to surgery for bronchial carcinoid tumors in the Thoracic Surgery Clinic of the 'Marius Nasta' Institute of Pneumophtisiology between 2014 and 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. All patients were submitted to paraclinical tests, imagistic studies (computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging), bronc

Extra-appendiceal neuroendocrine neoplasms in children - data from the GPOH-MET 97 Study.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN) in children are rare. In Germany, children with NEN of the gastroenteropancreatic system are prospectively registered since 1997. The objective of this study was to evaluate diagnostics, treatment and outcome in children with extra-appendiceal NEN.Clinical data of 39 patients with NEN registered in the GPOH-MET 97 trial from 1997 to 2012 were analyzed. Children with NEN of the appendix were excluded.14 patients with pancreatic, 12 patients with bronchial, 6 patients with gastrointestinal, 2 patients with nasopharyngeal and 5 patients with NEN of unknown primary w

Tracheal Squamous Cell Carcinoma in an Adult Cat.

A 7-year-old, neutered male domestic shorthair cat presented to a tertiary referral hospital for respiratory distress. Thoracic radiographs revealed severe tracheal stenosis, a cranial mediastinal mass, pleural effusion, and a perihilar bronchial pulmonary pattern. Neoplasia involving the trachea and cranial mediastinum was prioritized. Additional antemortem diagnostics were not pursued. With few reported treatment options, the owners elected euthanasia, and necropsy confirmed tracheal squamous cell carcinoma. Tracheal squamous cell carcinoma is a rare feline neoplasm associated with a poor pr

[Malignant tracheal tumor--differential diagnosis in bronchial asthma].

Primary tumours of the trachea are rare and most of the symptoms relate to obstruction of the air passage leading to inspiratory and expiratory stridor. Unfortunately, the inclusion of malignant tracheal neoplasms in the differential diagnosis of onset of wheeze in adults is even more rare than the tumours themselves. We report a case where a tracheal adenoid cystic carcinoma presented symptoms suggestive of bronchial asthma. It is emphasized that delay by the physician in diagnosing tracheal tumours is the principal problem, and that adult patients who experience onset of stridor and dyspnoe

[Pulmonary complications in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Results of a prospective study].

Between 1983 and 1987, a stepwise diagnostic programme was undertaken prospectively in 37 of 100 HIV-positive patients with 40 bronchopulmonary infections. It consisted chiefly of flexible bronchoscopy combined with lavage, transbronchial biopsy and/or removal of bronchial brush cells. Taking into account all examinations performed in life and at autopsy, 25 of the 37 patients had Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (67.5%), 13 had bacterial pneumonia, six of these were mycobacterial infections (atypical mycobacteria in four), eight had neoplasms (pulmonary Kaposi's sarcoma in five, squamous-cell c

Surgical Management of Bronchobiliary Fistula After Thoracoabdominal Trauma.

Bronchobiliary fistulas are exceedingly rare pathological connections between the biliary and the bronchial systems, which result from hepatobiliary neoplasms, abscesses, or thoracoabdominal trauma. Prompt recognition, diagnosis, and intervention is essential in order to prevent the high morbidity and mortality associated with this disease process. Multiple management strategies have been described in the literature; however, the optimal course has not been well defined. We present a case of a 31-year-old male who developed a bronchobiliary fistula 1 month after thoracoabdominal trauma. After

Aspergilloma in a pulmonary hydatid cyst: a case report.

The most common predisposing factor for aspergillomas is the presence of a pre-existing lung cavity secondary to tuberculosis, bronchial cysts and bullae, neoplasms, and pulmonary infarction. However, Aspergilloma within a hydatid cyst is a rare occurrence. A 52-year-old female was presented with chest pain and shortness of breath. Computerized tomography-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA) showed fragment of lamellated membrane of hydatid cyst in a background of amorphous debris. Surgical enucleation of the cyst revealed lamellated hyaline acellular ectocyst of hydatid cyst and collections of

Sarcoidosis or malignancy: a diagnostic dilemma.

Differentiating sarcoidosis from malignant neoplasms is not always easy. Sarcoidosis may present with bronchial stenosis and pseudotumorous formations in the lung and in various other organs. Conversely, metastatic or lymphomatous invasion of thoracic lymph nodes more often closely resembles the bilateral hilar adenopathies of sarcoidosis. Asymmetric lymph node swelling, while suggestive of malignancy, does not rule out sarcoidosis. Regional or generalised granuloma formation may occur in patients with malignant lymphoma or carcinoma of the lung, probably in reaction to neoplastic tissue. Its

[A case of bronchial mucoepidermoid carcinoma in an 18-year old man].

18 years old man with mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the left main bronchus was treated in Cardiothoracic Department of Institute of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases in Warsaw. Diagnosis was established by microscopic examination of the samples taken during bronchofiberoscopy. Sleeve resection of the left main bronchus was performed. Microscopic examination of the resected tumor confirmed previous diagnosis and showed also that wall of the bronchus was not infiltrated by neoplasm and tumor was of low-grade malignancy. After the operation granulosis slightly narrowing bronchial anastomosis was obser

MEN1 gene analysis in sporadic adrenocortical neoplasms.

Adrenocortical tumors occur as sporadic tumors, as part of the multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) syndrome or as part of other hereditary disorders. We recently cloned the MEN1 gene, a tumor-suppressor gene located on chromosome 11q13. Subsequently, we showed that sequential somatic inactivation of both alleles of the MEN1 gene contributes to the development of some sporadic endocrine neoplasms (parathyroid, enteropancreatic neuroendocrine, bronchial carcinoid, and pituitary tumors). We now studied whether somatic inactivation of the MEN1 gene contributes to the pathogenesis of sporadi

[Identification of clinical, biological and prognostic factors in recurring squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck].

Many studies have been performed to determine some prognostic factors for malignant head and neck tumors. Defining the clinical and biological features would enable one to predict the progression of the disease and plan treatment. The aim of the present study has been to identify what host and neoplasm characteristics provide prognostic indication of possible recurrences. A group of 380 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck was studied. The neoplasm was located in the following sites: 257 larynx-hypopharynx, 69 oropharynx, 54 oral cavity. At the present time 309 of these s

Cytopathology of salivary gland myoepithelial carcinoma: A study of 13 cases and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Myoepithelial carcinoma (MECA) is an infrequently recognized salivary gland (SG) neoplasm that commonly develops within a preexisting pleomorphic adenoma (MECA ex PA). Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy reports of this neoplasm are largely restricted to small series and single case reports. METHODS: Our cytopathology files were searched for examples of SG MECA/MECA ex PA having confirmatory histopathologic verification. Conventional FNA biopsy smears were performed, and exfoliative specimens processed using standard techniques. RESULTS: Thirteen cases from 9 patients (M:F = 3.

Spectrum of pulmonary neuroendocrine proliferations and neoplasms.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms are ubiquitous tumors found throughout the body, most commonly in the gastrointestinal tract followed by the thorax. Neuroendocrine cells occur normally in the bronchial and bronchiolar epithelium and may be solitary or may occur in clusters. Although neuroendocrine cell proliferations may be found in association with chronic lung disease, a broad range of neuroendocrine proliferations and neoplasms may occur and exhibit variable biologic behavior. Diffuse idiopathic neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia (DIPNECH) is a diffuse idiopathic form of neuroendocrine cell hyperplas

[Incidence of chronic diseases in families of allergic children with recurrent infections].

An incidence of the chronic ailments has been determined in families of allergic children with recurrent infections. Typical allergic disorders and syndromes, including infantile eczema in the first year of life (48.0% of children), and positive skin prick tests (52.0%), have been characteristic for this group of children. Moreover, cell-mediated immunological deficit has been seen in 37.0% of these children, humoral immunological disorders--in 23.0%, and phagocytosis disturbances--in 30.0% of children. Sixty five percent of the examined children has been hospitalized from 1 to 10 times and mo
