A review of the health effects of cadmium is presented. Overexposure to cadmium produces numerous acute and chronic effects. Cases of acute poisoning resemble metal-fume poisoning. The first and most distinctive indication of chronic effects is renal tubular dysfunction characterized by proteinuria. Other chronic effects include liver damage, emphysema, osteomalacia, neurological impairment, testicular, pancreatic, and adrenal damage, and anemia. Tumorigenic effects have been observed in animals, and excessive prostatic and lung cancer has been observed in worker studies. In vitro and in vivo …

Cadmium (Cd2+) contamination poses serious threats to environmental safety and public health, necessitating the development of sensitive and reliable detection tools. Herein, a novel fluorescent probe CdTS-Se, based on a nitrobenzoselenadiazole fluorophore coupled with a di-2-picolylamine (DPA) recognition unit, is reported for Cd2+ detection. CdTS-Se exhibits ultrafast response (<0.5 s), high sensitivity (LOD = 10.7 nM), and excellent selectivity for Cd2+. It exhibits a far emission and excellent photostability, making it ideal for both in vivo and environmental applications. CdTS-Se was succ…

Long-term exposure to Cd through contaminated food can lead to multiple adverse health effects on humans. Although previous studies have covered global food Cd concentrations and dietary Cd exposures across different populations, there are increasing concerns regarding the adequacy of current food Cd safety standards to protect populations from adverse health effects. Moreover, incorporation of Cd relative bioavailability (Cd-RBA) in foods improves the accuracy of health risk assessment. However, factors influencing food Cd-RBA have not been systematically discussed, thereby hindering its appl

Several sulfur compounds are thought to play important roles in the plant tolerance to cadmium (Cd), but the role of inorganic sulfide in Cd tolerance remains largely unknown. In this study, we found that Cd exposure increased the accumulation of soluble sulfide in Arabidopsis plants. When exogenous sulfide, in the form of NaHS, was foliarly applied, Cd-induced growth inhibition and oxidative stress were alleviated. In addition, although the foliar application of sulfide did not affect the total Cd levels, it significantly decreased the soluble Cd fractions in plants. Furthermore, foliar appli…

Cadmium (Cd), classified as human carcinogen, is an extremely toxic heavy metal pollutant, and there is an increasing environmental concern for cadmium exposure through anthropogenic sources including cigarette smoke. Though Cd based nanoparticles such as cadmium oxide (CdO) are being widely used in a variety of clinical and industrial applications, the toxicity of CdO nanoparticles has not been well characterized. Herein we report the toxicity of CdO nanoparticles employing zebrafish as a model. Two different CdO nanoparticles were prepared, calcination of Cd(OH)2 without any organic molecule…

Sedum alfredii has been reported to be a cadmium (Cd) hyperaccumulator. Phytochelatins (PCs) and other thiol (SH)-containing compounds have been proposed to play an important role in the detoxification and tolerance of some heavy metals, but it is not clear whether PCs are responsible for Cd hyperaccumulation and tolerance in S. alfredii. In this study, two geographically isolated populations of S. alfredii were studied: one population grew on an old Pb/Zn mine site, while the other on a non-mine site. The mine population of this species exhibited a stronger heavy metal tolerance than in the o…

A meta-analysis of existing scientific literature recently suggested that Cd is absorbed more efficiently by sheep if it is in the organic form in grass, than if it is added as an inorganic supplement to the diet. We tested this experimentally by feeding sheep grass from contaminated soil, compared with uncontaminated grass and with Cd added to the diet. To produce contaminated herbage, Cd nitrate was added to soil in 11 lysimeters sown with perennial ryegrass, with a further 11 lysimeters receiving no Cd to produce uncontaminated herbage. In the Cd-treated lysimeters, soil had increased excha

Rainbow trout were exposed to a sublethal concentration of waterborne Cd (0 or 3 microg/L) or dietary Cd (0 or 500 mg/kg dry wt) for 30 days to induce acclimation, and tissue Cd and metallothionein (MT) levels were examined. The greatest Cd concentrations were observed in the kidney followed by the gills and liver of the fish exposed to Cd via water, but in the gut tissues followed by the kidney, liver, and gills for dietary-exposed fish, reflecting a variation depending on the route of Cd exposure. Some MT was found in the nonacclimated naïve fish with no experience of elevated Cd exposure, a

Study was conducted in a group of 32 persons engaged in liquid phase epitaxial growth of mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) layers for nearly 11 years. Airborne mercury concentrations in work environment have been exceeding the threshold limit value of 0.05 mg/m3 recommended by ACGIHD. Hg concentration in workplace during peak working hours remained between 0.04-0.08 mg/m3. Findings were compared with 32 unexposed referents. Mercury value was estimated 1.60 +/- 0.20 (mean +/- SD) in control, and in Phase I and II, 10.72 +/- 1.34 ng Hg/ml and 8.08 +/- 1.15 ng Hg/ml of blood respectively. Results i…

The effects of a single dose of Cd (1.27 mg/kg), within 6 hr of birth, on the hepatic monooxygenase system of the immature and the adult rat … ecreased by 28 and 17%. The activities of the latter two enzymes did not differ between control and cadmium groups when expressed either in terms of cytochrome P450 or NADPH cytochrome c reductase. This suggests that neonatally administered Cd depresses their induction through the cytochrome and/or the reductase.

Cadmium (Cd²⁺) is a persistent neurotoxic metal, but the brain proteins recoverable by cadmium-affinity enrichment after exposure remain incompletely defined. We developed cadmium-immobilized metal affinity chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (Cd-IMAC-MS), which combines non-denaturing Cd²⁺-charged nitrilotriacetic acid (Cd-NTA) affinity recovery, blank-NTA controls, and data-independent acquisition (DIA) proteomics. The discovery experiment comprised 12 independent animals in a balanced 2 × 2 exposure-by-affinity-matrix design (n = 3 per cell). For 2,119 proteins quantified across a…

Cadmium (Cd) is a pervasive environmental contaminant that accumulates in the food chain, posing significant risks to animals and humans. This study investigated the potential of dietary pyranoanthocyanins, which can mitigate Cd toxicity. In a 1-week Cd-exposure experiment, Cd levels in the blood, small intestine, and feces dramatically increased in the Cd-exposed group, but cyanidin-3-glucoside-4-vinylcatechol (C3G_VC) intervention significantly reduced ileum Cd content while enhancing fecal Cd excretion. Furthermore, the Cd_C3G_VC group significantly upregulated the expression levels of tigh…

Cadmium (Cd) directly endangers poultry health and indirectly causes harm to human health by food chain. Numerous studies have focused on removing Cd using lactic acid bacteria (LAB). However, there is still a lack of in vivo studies to validate whether Cd can be absorbed successfully by LAB to alleviate Cd toxicity. Here, we aimed to isolated and screened poultry-derived Cd-tolerant LAB with the strongest adsorption capacity in vitro and investigate the protective effect of which on sub-chronic Cd toxicity in chickens. First, nine Cd-tolerant LAB strains were selected preliminarily by isolati…

Wurtzite CdSe quantum belts with L-type n-octylamine, L-type ammonia, or Z-type Cd(oleate)2 ligands are exchanged for several metal-dithiocarbamate ligands [M(S2CNR1R2)2]: Cd(S2CNPhMe)2, Cd(S2CNEt2)2, Zn(S2CNPhMe)2, and Zn(S2CNEt2)2. Successful ligand exchange with all M(S2CNR1R2)2 compounds occurs from {CdSe[Cd(oleate)2]0.19} quantum belts (QBs), which induce similar spectral shifts in the absorption spectra of the ligand-exchanged QBs. Spectroscopic data, experimentally determined lattice strains, and ligand exchanges with [Na][Et2NCS2] and [NH4][MePhNCS2] establish that the [M(S2CNR1R2)2] l

Biomineralization is often used by microorganisms to sequester heavy metal ions and provides a potential means for remediating increasing levels of heavy metal pollution. Bacteria have been shown to utilize cysteine for the biomineralization of metal sulfide. Indeed, in the present study, the supplement of L-cysteine was found to significantly improve both cadmium resistance and removal abilities of a deep-sea bacterium Pseudomonas stutzeri 273 through cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticle biomineralization. With a proteomic approach, threonine dehydratase of P. stutzeri 273 (psTD) was proposed t…

The heavy metal cadmium (Cd) is a widespread environmental contaminant with harmful effects on living cells. In plants, phytochelatin (PC)-dependent Cd detoxification requires that PC-Cd complexes are transported into vacuoles. Here, it is shown that Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings defective in the ABCC transporter AtABCC3 (abcc3) have an increased sensitivity to different Cd concentrations, and that seedlings overexpressing AtABCC3 (AtABCC3ox) have an increased Cd tolerance. The cellular distribution of Cd was analysed in protoplasts from abcc3 mutants and AtABCC3 overexpressors grown in the p…

The title compound, [Cd(CH(4)N(2)S)(2)(H(2)O)(4)][Cd(CH(4)N(2)S)(3)(H(2)O)(3)](SO(4))(2), contains two mol-ecules of each of the Cd complexes and four sulfate ions in the asymmetric unit: all the Cd atoms exhibit distorted octa-hedral geometries. The Cd-S and Cd-O bond lengths around the Cd atoms in the bis-(thio-urea) cations are in the ranges 2.580 (4)-2.599 (4) and 2.323 (8)-2.421 (9) Å, respectively, and the S atoms are in a cis orientation. In the tris-(thio-urea) cations, the corresponding bond lengths around the Cd atoms are slightly longer and are in the ranges 2.559 (4)-2.706 (3) and

Studies in the recovery from metal stress and the tolerance development to metal exposure of aquatic organisms are important for the understanding of epidemic pollution. In this study, the responses of a marine diatom, Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii, following recovery from environmental cadmium (Cd) stress were investigated. The diatoms were exposed to different concentrations of Cd for 7 days, and were then allowed different periods of time to recover. The Cd sensitivity increased after recovery from Cd stress, followed by a gradual restoration. The extent of restoration depended on both the …

Low molecular weight cadmium-binding proteins were studed in lung tissue from rabbits exposed to aerosols of CdCl2. Lungs obtained from animals exposed by inhalation to aerosols of 800 or 1600 micrograms/m3 CdCl2 for 2-hr periods/day, every other day for a 5-day period, were found to contain at least three low molecular weight cadmium-binding proteins, two of which were similar electrophoretically and spectrally to rabbit liver metallothionein. The third protein(s), which accounted for the majority of the cadmium in the soluble fraction of the tissue, did not bind to an anionic exchange gel an…
