Steroid-induced hypocalcaemia with tetany in a patient with hypoparathyroidism.

Although glucocorticoids have a known negative effect on calcium balance, they do not normally cause clinically significant hypocalcaemia. A young woman with post-surgical hypoparathyroidism developed symptomatic hypocalcaemia on two occasions following treatment with intravenous hydrocortisone for allergic reactions. Oral calcium and vitamin D supplementation could not prevent the development of hypocalcaemia. She was treated successfully with intravenous calcium gluconate infusions and discontinuation of glucocorticoids. In patients with hypoparathyroidism, impaired parathyroid hormone respo…

Effects of calcium solubility on adsorption by rats with induced achlorhydria.

Gastric X-irradiated, achlorhydric rats and sham-operated controls were fed diets containing very soluble calcium chloride or calcium gluconate or slightly soluble calcium carbonate or tricalcium phosphate for 3 weeks. Calcium was absorbed more efficiently by achlorhydric rats from the very soluble salts from the slihtly soluble salts. The control rats absorbed calcium from the very soluble and slightly soluble calcium salts with similar efficiency. Achlorhydric rats fed slightly soluble calcium salts developed weaker bones with a lower mineral content than did those fed very soluble calcium. …

Rate-dependency of calcitonin secretion in response to increased plasma Ca2+.

BACKGROUND: Calcitonin (CT) is a polypeptide hormone secreted from C-cells of the thyroid gland in response to hypercalcemia. The physiological contribution of CT to calcium homeostasis has not been completely clarified. The present study therefore further characterized the sigmoidal relationship between plasma ionized calcium (P-Ca2+) and CT in normal rats, and examined the possibility of rate-dependency of CT secretion in response to changes in P-Ca2+. DESIGN: Hypercalcaemia was induced by an infusion of calcium gluconate at rate of 4.5 x 10(-2) mmol h-1 rat-1 i.v. (n = 8) and hypocalcaemia…

Inadvertent injection of potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride during treatment of chronic low back ache with epidural injection leading to paraplegia.

Epidural injection of steroid is given for back pain resistant to other conservative management. Normal saline (NS) is used as diluent in 80 … paraplegia. Electrocardiography and blood showed features suggestive of hyperkalemia. He was given calcium gluconate and potassium chelating agent along with supportive measures. The patient recovered within 8 h. It is concluded that calcium gluconate and potassium chelating agent can be used if accidentally KCl is injected in epidural space.

Effects of the experimental chemopreventative agent, glucarate, on intestinal carcinogenesis in rats.

Dietary calcium glucarate was previously shown to protect effectively against chemically-induced mammary, lung, liver and skin carcinogenesis in rodents, whereas the negative dietary calcium control, calcium gluconate, had no effect. In the present study the chemopreventative activity of dietary calcium glucarate was evaluated in the azoxymethane intestinal carcinogenesis model using the Fischer strain rat. The protocol limited the duration of azoxymethane treatment to 3 weeks to permit the evaluation of the separate effects of glucarate on the initiation and promotion phases. Control rats, tr…

Calcium hydroxide paste as a surface detoxifying agent for infected dental implants: two case reports.

Dental implant treatment is successful; however, an implant can become infected during or after osseointegration. The two case reports presented here demonstrate, anecdotally, the effectiveness of endodontic calcium hydroxide paste for the surface treatment of infected, healing, or osseointegrated dental implants. Calcium hydroxide may be an appropriate surface detoxifying agent for local dental implant infections. A sequence of calcium hydroxide and 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate surface treatment may provide a broad range of antimicrobial action for detoxifying recalcitrant infections. Calcium

Continuous venovenous hemodiafiltration along with charcoal hemoperfusion for the management of life-threatening lercanidipine and amlodipine overdose.

Overdose with calcium channel blockers is uncommon, but is associated with high mortality. The management includes fluid resuscitation, calcium gluconate, glucagon, vasopressors, and high-dose insulin-euglycemia therapy. We describe a rare case of massive overdose of lercanidipine with shock, refractory to conventional therapies and multi-organ failure. Charcoal hemoperfusion with continuous venovenous hemodiafiltration was then used successfully and the patient showed remarkable recovery.

Hypocalcemia, hypomagnesemia, and hypokalemia following hydrofluoric acid chemical injury.

Dermal exposure to hydrofluoric acid could potentially result in severe serum calcium and magnesium depletion induced by binding with fluoride anion. This report describes the case of a 48-year-old man who developed hypocalcemia and hypomagnesemia accompanied by hypokalemia-an interesting finding-following a chemical injury with exposure to 70% hydrofluoric acid. Successful treatment included administration of calcium gluconate and magnesium both intravenously and topically.

Torsade de pointes induced by hypocalcemia in a postoperative patient with thyrotoxicosis.

A 29-year-old woman with a long-term history of Graves' disease was admitted for thyroidectomy. Torsade de pointes occurred after the subtotal thyroidectomy. The level of her serum calcium was lower than normal. After administration of calcium gluconate intravenously, torsade de pointes disappeared and was no longer recorded. It is assumed that her torsade de pointes was caused by hypocalcemia as a complication of subtotal thyroidectomy.

Ventricular tachycardia in a patient with primary hyperparathyroidism.

We present a case of primary hyperparathyroidism with hypercalcemia in a patient who had spontaneous attacks of ventricular tachycardia. Right ventricular burst pacing reproducibly induced ventricular tachycardia in the electrophysiological laboratory after intravenous administration of calcium-gluconate, and verapamil could terminate the tachycardia. After resection of the parathyroid adenoma, the calcium level was restored to normal, and ventricular tachycardia did not occur again during the follow-up period.

Influence of iron, calcium, and zinc on the oxidative stability of omega-3 fatty acids in pea protein-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions.

BACKGROUND: Plant-based emulsified foods fortified with omega-3 fatty acids and minerals are nutritionally attractive, but their formulation is challenging because alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is highly susceptible to oxidation and some mineral salts may act as pro-oxidants. This study evaluated how iron, zinc, and calcium salts affect pea protein isolate (PPI) properties and ALA oxidative stability in PPI/kappa-carrageenan (KC) gelled emulsions. Treatments included PPI-mineral systems containing ferrous glycinate (FeGly), zinc gluconate (ZnG), calcium gluconate (CaG), calcium lactate (CaL), cal…

A Rare Presentation of Hypocalcaemia-Induced Seizure Secondary to Late-Onset Post-Thyroidectomy Complication.

We report a rare case of late-onset hypocalcaemia presenting with seizure in a female patient, occurring approximately 25 years after a total thyroidectomy. Initial investigations ruled out intracranial pathology, and biochemical analysis confirmed severe hypocalcaemia. The patient responded to intravenous calcium gluconate infusion, with subsequent stabilisation on oral calcium therapy. Notably, the patient had been non-compliant with long-term calcium supplementation. This report underscores that chronic hypocalcaemia can manifest with acute neurological symptoms such as seizures and highlig…

[A rare cause of 2:1 atrioventricular block and congestive heart failure in preterm infants: Hypocalcemia].

Atrioventricular (AV) block in the neonatal period is a rare disorder. It is frequently associated with underlying structural congenital heart disease and maternal lupus. Presently described is premature baby who developed 2:1 AV block and congestive heart failure due to hypocalcemia. Dramatic clinical improvement was observed following treatment of intravenous 10% calcium gluconate. Therefore, it is suggested that serum calcium level of newborns with AV block and congestive heart failure be measured.

When the Going Gets Tough: A Case Report and Review of Calcinosis Cutis in an Infant with Pseudo-Hypoaldosteronism.

Calcium gluconate solutions are an essential part of the intensive care medication armamentarium. Calcium-related extravasations are not an infrequent occurrence. However, occult extravasation presenting solely as an isolated mass lesion with no preceding cutaneous manifestation is rare. Calcinosis cutis is an extraosseous collection of calcium deposits in the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Multiple etiopathogenetic factors play a role in its manifestations. We illustrate a case of a seven-week-old infant diagnosed with pseudo-hypoaldosteronism with a mysterious swelling on the left leg during…
