Intramedullary Canal Injection of Vancomycin- and Tobramycin-loaded Calcium Sulfate: A Novel Technique for the Treatment of Chronic Intramedullary Osteomyelitis.

AIM: In this study, we present a detailed surgical technique for treating chronic osteomyelitis (COM) of the intramedullary canal with injectable tobramycin and vancomycin-loaded calcium sulfate (CS). BACKGROUND: Chronic osteomyelitis of the long bones has been treated using antibiotic-impregnated polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), which typically requires a second procedure for removal. TECHNIQUE: Removal of the infected intramedullary nail (if any), copious irrigation, canal reaming, and intramedullary canal injection of vancomycin- and tobramycin-loaded calcium sulfate as a single-stage proc

An assessment of physical properties and the viability of osteoblast-like cells of cefazolin-impregnated calcium sulfate bone-void filler.

Calcium sulfate, an injectable and biodegradable bone-void filler, is widely used in orthopedic surgery. Based on clinical experience, bone-defect substitutes can also serve as vehicles for the delivery of drugs, for example, antibiotics, to prevent or to treat infections such as osteomyelitis. However, antibiotic additions change the characteristics of calcium sulfate cement. Moreover, high-dose antibiotics may also be toxic to bony tissues. Accordingly, cefazolin at varying weight ratios was added to calcium sulfate samples and characterized in vitro. The results revealed that cefazolin chan

Antioxidant Sulfated Polysaccharide from Edible Red Seaweed Gracilaria birdiae is an Inhibitor of Calcium Oxalate Crystal Formation.

The genus Gracilaria synthesizes sulfated polysaccharides (SPs). Many of these SPs, including those synthesized by the edible seaweed Gracilaria birdiae, have not yet been adequately investigated for their use as potential pharmaceutical compounds. Previous studies have demonstrated the immunomodulatory effects of sulfated galactans from G. birdiae. In this study, a galactan (GB) was extracted from G. birdiae and evaluated by cell proliferation and antioxidant tests. GB showed no radical hydroxyl (OH) and superoxide (O2-) scavenging ability. However, GB was able to donate electrons in two furt

Surgical treatment for symptomatic non-ossifying fibromas of the lower extremity with calcium sulfate grafts in skeletally immature patients.

BACKGROUND: Non-ossifying fibromas (NOFs) are common benign bone lesions found in children and adolescents. They usually involve metaphysis of long bones, tend to gradually disappear with age and usually do not require surgery, while they are not associated with pathological fractures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome and efficacy of a single-stage procedure, comprising curettage of the lesion and calcium sulfate pellet (CaSP) grafting, in skeletally immature patients with large, symptomatic NOF of the lower extremity, and the possible limitations of the procedure. METHODS: N

The effect of demineralized bone matrix-calcium sulfate with vancomycin on calcaneal fracture healing and infection rates: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures may have a central cancellous bone defect area. We hypothesized that human demineralized bone matrix (DBM) calcium sulfate (CaSO(4)) might act as a reasonable alternative to autograft in calcaneal fractures. When combined with antibiotic powder, this bone graft substitute also may act as a local antibiotic delivery device. This is the first clinical study evaluating bone healing and complications associated with DBM-calcium sulfate bone graft substitute in the treatment of displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures with a central can

Reduced Cd, Pb, and As accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa L.) by a combined amendment of calcium sulfate and ferric oxide.

A combined amendment (CF) consisting of 90% calcium sulfate (CaSO4) and 10% ferric oxide (Fe2O3) was used to investigate the feasibility, active principles, and possible mechanisms of the immobilization of heavy metals in paddy soil. A soil incubation experiment, two consecutive pot trials, and a field experiment were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and persistence of CF on metal(loid) immobilization. Soil incubation experiment results indicated that the application of CF significantly decreased the concentrations of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and arsenic (As) in soil solution. CF treatm

Preparation and physical characterization of calcium sulfate cement/silica-based mesoporous material composites for controlled release of BMP-2.

As a commonly used implant material, calcium sulfate cement (CSC), has some shortcomings, including low compressive strength, weak osteoinduction capability, and rapid degradation. In this study, silica-based mesoporous materials such as SBA-15 were synthesized and combined with CSC to prepare CSC/SBA-15 composites. The properties of SBA-15 were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. SBA-15 was blended into CSC at 0, 5, 10, and 20 wt%, referred to as CSC, CSC-5S (5% mass ratio), CSC-10S (10% mass ratio), and CSC-20S (

New bone formation using antibiotic-loaded calcium sulfate beads in bone transports for the treatment of long-bone osteomyelitis.

PURPOSE: Bone transport is one of the most frequently used techniques for critical-sized bone defects due to trauma or infection. To fill the defect area and avoid the collapse of soft tissues during transport, some authors have described the use of polymethylmethacrylate or absorbable antibiotic carriers in the form of cylindrical blocks. METHODS: In this article, we present our experience in the treatment of post-traumatic osteomyelitis of the lower and upper limbs, using a bone transport technique with antibiotic-loaded calcium sulfate in the form of beads. Results With the progressive abs

Complex Foot Infection Treated With Surgical Debridement and Antibiotic Loaded Calcium Sulfate-A Retrospective Cohort Study of 137 Cases.

Complex foot infections involving bone and soft tissue in patients with co-morbidities such as diabetes and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) are a cause of significant hospital admission. They are associated with substantial economic costs to health services worldwide. Historically, severe foot infection has been treated with surgical debridement and prolonged courses of systemic antibiotics. Prolonged systemic antibiotic use increases the risk of drug side effects, antimicrobial resistance and Clostridium difficile infection. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether surgical debr

Combination of calcium sulfate and simvastatin-controlled release microspheres enhances bone repair in critical-sized rat calvarial bone defects.

Most allogenic bone graft substitutes have only osteoconductive properties. Developing new strategies to improve the osteoinductive activity of bone graft substitutes is both critical and practical for clinical application. Previously, we developed novel simvastatin-encapsulating poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) microspheres (SIM/PLGA) that slowly release simvastatin and enhance fracture healing. In this study, we combined SIM/PLGA with a rapidly absorbable calcium sulfate (CS) bone substitute and studied the effect on bone healing in critical-sized calvarial bone defects in a rat model. The cyto

Comparison of percutaneous screw fixation and calcium sulfate cement grafting versus open treatment of displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures.

BACKGROUND: The conventional treatment for displaced intraarticular fractures of the calcaneus (DIACF), with open reduction and internal plate fixation (ORIF), carries the risk of wound infection and delayed recovery. Alternatively percutaneous fixation techniques offer the possibility of equivalent outcomes in with a reduction in soft tissue complications. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the outcome of percutaneous reduction (PR), screw fixation, and calcium sulphate cement (CSC) grafting in the treatment of DIACF. METHODS: Ninety patients were randomly assigned to PR and CSC g
