OBJECTIVE: To estimate the burden of tuberculosis (TB) contact investigations in California, assess outcomes and effectiveness, and identify performance gaps.
METHODS: Aggregate program management reports were used to examine contact investigations conducted for pulmonary TB cases reported between 1 July 1999 and 30 June 2000 in California. Findings were compared to national objectives, and performance gaps were identified. Costs were estimated, and effectiveness of TB case detection and prevention was assessed.

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of hypospadias has been reported to be increasing. The objectives of this study were to extend the literature on the descriptive epidemiology of hypospadias and to determine whether its birth prevalence increased in California in recent years. OBJECTIVE: To determine presentation, clinical course, and outcome of a cohort of pregnant women with coccidioidomycosis and compare findings with common observations reported in the literature.
METHODS: Thirty-two women who delivered live infants or aborted fetuses in 1993 and had confirmed diagnoses of coccidioidomycosis were included in the study. Medical records were evaluated retrospectively for clinical characteristics, laboratory results, and disease course.

Holoprosencephaly (HPE) is a common developmental anomaly of the forebrain and midface in which the cerebral hemispheres fail to separate into distinct left and right halves. An adult mountain lion (Felis concolor) from the vicinity of Weldon, California (USA) was necropsied following euthanasia due to emaciation and proximity to semi-rural housing. There were spherules consistent with Coccidioides immitis within peritoneal surfaces with granulomatous inflammation and fungi consistent with C. immitis were cultured from abdominal fluid. This is the first reported case of coccidioidomycosis in a wild mountain lion.

In experiments to determine the current susceptibility to plague, it was demonstrated that 256 Yersinia pestis (a local strain of high virulence) were required to produce a 50% infectious dose (ID50) in California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi) that had been collected in southeastern Monterey County, California; 6,070 Y. pestis were required to produce a 50% lethal dose (LD50). Twenty percent of the California sea lion pups born on San Miguel Island die due to premature parturition. Specimens collected from premature-partus animals resulted in recovery of a virus, San Miguel Sea Lion Virus, indistinguishable from Vesicular Exanthema of Swine Virus, and Leptospira pomona from some of the premature cows and pups. Trifluoroacetate (TFA, CF3COO-) is a stable and mildly phytotoxic breakdown product of several fluorinated organic compounds including the hydro(chloro)fluorocarbons (HFC/HCFCs) that have largely replaced the stratospheric ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). TFA enters aquatic ecosystems primarily through precipitation and has the potential to accumulate in water bodies with little or no outflow to the point where toxic concentrations could be achieved. In the United States, hydatid disease of the liver is being seen with increasing frequency in persons who have immigrated from endemic areas. At the University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center, 24 patients with 46 echinococcal cysts were managed over a 26 year period.
