The association between progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) and malignancy is uncommon. Peptide neurotoxins isolated from the venom of snakes, spiders and snails have represented invaluable tools for the identification and characterisation of membrane ion channels and receptors in vertebrate cells, including human neurons. We here report on the use of these toxins for the characterisation of membrane ion channels and receptors expressed by one of the most aggressive human cancers, small-cell lung carcinoma. This tumour shares many properties with other neuro-endocrine cell types, including the ability of firing action potentials and release hormones in a calcium-dependent manner.

A case of a gastric small cell carcinoma discovered incidentally by screening ultrasonography is presented. Ultrasonography demonstrated a subcardial metastatic lymph node and multiple hepatic metastatic lesions. Upper GI series and gastroendoscopy revealed a large ulcerated tumor in the cardia of the stomach, and a Borrmann type II tumor, 4 x 2.5 cm, was found in the resected stomach. We describe the radiological findings of the upper GI series, ultrasonography, CT, and gastroendoscopy, and review the literature.

Haematophagocytic activity is a salient feature of malignant histiocytic medullary reticulosis. This potency has also been observed as an aberrant property of non-histiocytic malignant cells or as a benign histiocytic process in response to infections or malignancies. We report the case of a patient who presented simultaneously with a limited stage small cell lung carcinoma and a fatal reactive form of histiocytosis. We conclude that such a haematophagocytic syndrome may occur in the setting of small cell lung carcinoma s previously described in other malignancies.
