Uremic pericarditis may complicate either acute or, more commonly, chronic renal failure. When dialysis is not employed, uremic pericarditis is usually a preterminal event and is characterized by a serofibrinous exudation of an amount inadequate to cause cardiac tamponade. Nevertheless, cardiac tamponade may uncommonly be observed in nondialyzed patients. Cardiac tamponade, which may be life-threatening, is more common in dialyzed than in nondialyzed patients with chronic renal failure. The primary causes of cardiac tamponade in uremic pericarditis in order of decreasing frequency are (1) peri…

OBJECTIVE: Delayed cardiac tamponade, a life-threatening complication of pericardial effusion in humans, has rarely been described in large animal models. We report here a pig with cardiac tamponade that developed 29 days after cardiac surgery.
STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
ANIMALS: One 45-kg domestic pig.
METHODS: Open-chest surgery was performed on a pig to induce chronic heart failure. At 15 days after surgery, the pig's breathing appeared laboured; induced heart failure was considered the cause. Routine heart failure medications were administered.
RESULTS: On day 28, the pig's status dete…

Primary cardiac lymphoma (PCL) is among the rarest heart neoplasms. Its estimated incidence is about 1%-2% among primary cardiac tumor and 0.5% of extranodal lymphoma. It usually causes heart failure, pericardial effusion, tamponade, and arrhythmias. Prognosis is poor; treatment is combined medical and surgical. We described the case of a 62-year-old male with PLC that presented with syncope and cardiac tamponade, submitted to R-CHOP therapy because of failure of surgery. Clinical state is stable 3 months after diagnosis and first chemotherapy cycle.

Introduction. Catheter-based diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are rapidly advancing. However, catheter related complications sometimes become life threatening. Cardiac tamponade is a rare but serious complication of this procedure. We have summarized one cardiac tamponade pejoration due to secondary coronary vessels laceration by the implanted pericardial drainage. Case report. A 4-year-old baby having Tetralogy of Fallot was posted for diagnostic catheterization study. Patient was induced with sevoflurane and spontaneous respiration was maintained. After catheter insertion to RV, dye was…

Hypothyroidism is a condition characterized by low thyroid hormone levels that can affect multiple organ systems with varying symptomatology. Common cardiac manifestations of hypothyroidism include bradycardia and decreased cardiac output. Pericardial effusion can also occur as a result of the condition and rarely can progress to cardiac tamponade. Patients with cardiac tamponade occurring as a result of underlying hypothyroidism can present atypically compared to those experiencing cardiac tamponade due to other causes. Patients with cardiac tamponade as a result of underlying hypothyroidism …

Delayed cardiac tamponade following blunt chest trauma is a rare incident, and we provide a report including a literature review for further discussion. The patient is a 56-year-old male. He fell off a motorcycle and sustained contusions to the left side of his chest. He presented to our emergency department. His consciousness was clear and vital signs were normal. Computed tomography (CT) scan revealed multiple left rib fractures, left hemothorax, and left pulmonary contusion, but no pericardial effusion was detected. He returned home, and stayed at rest for a few days. He walked for 15 minut…

Subacute cardiac tamponade is a diagnostic challenge for clinicians because the symptoms would be non-specific upon presentation. The onset of cardiac tamponade may vary depending on the rate of accumulation and compensatory mechanism of the fibroelastic pericardial sac. In the case of subacute tamponade with effusion without cardiac arrest, it is usually challenging for the clinician to make the decision for urgent drainage. Usually, cardiac tamponade is treated as a medical emergency, and it occurs when fluid accumulated in the pericardial sac compresses the heart causing haemodynamic compro…

Every year, Influenza infection contributes to significant morbidity and mortality carrying a huge economic burden. Extra-pulmonary manifestations are increasingly being recognized. We present a 29-year-old woman with acute pericarditis and cardiac tamponade requiring emergent pericardiocentesis secondary to Influenza B infection. Although very rare in relation to Influenza B infection, the pericardial disease can occur during the acute infection or as a post-viral syndrome. Considering pericardial disease in patients with chest pain and any viral infection may facilitate timely diagnosis and …

The causes of cardiac tamponade include neoplastic pericarditis as well as radiation-induced, drug-induced, purulent and iatrogenic pericarditis. Since we can get access to the advanced cancer therapy these days, some of the cardiac tamponade patients can survive longer if we can manage their pericardial effusion well. Here, we will summarize the clinical evidence in cardiac tamponade in patients with malignant tumor, and will discuss about its presentation, diagnosis and management.

Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) is still associated with complications which include mortality in 7.3% of cases. In this report, we describe the case of a man with a pseudoaneurysm of the aortic isthmus that was scheduled to undergo endovascular repair. During the procedure, the patient had a sudden cardiac arrest due to a compressive hemopericardium caused by perforation of the ascending aorta. The diagnosis was not clear and was made by transthoracic echocardiography after five minutes of resuscitation. In spite of the evacuation of the hemopericardium and suture of the perforati

A 71-year-old woman, with a history of light-chain amyloidosis, presented with a sudden onset dyspnoea. Echocardiography showed a large pericardial effusion with compression of the right atrium and the right ventricle. Right heart catheterisation demonstrated equalisation of her diastolic pressures consistent with cardiac tamponade. Pericardiocentesis revealed a haemmorrhagic exudative effusion with no evidence of malignancy. Bone marrow biopsy and other investigations showed no evidence of multiple myeloma. Her effusion recurred 2 weeks later and repeat pericardiocentesis demonstrated similar…

A patient developed an acute severe haemodynamic compromise immediately after a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) procedure for intractable ascites. Rapid clinical and echographic evaluation disclosed pericardial blood and cardiac tamponade, probably due to right heart perforation from guidewire and catheter manipulation. Needle drainage of pericardial fluid restored the haemodynamic status. A right ventricular perforation was then successfully treated (sternotomy and closure of right ventricle perforation) and the patient survived. Cardiac tamponade should be considered in …

This article describes a 16-yr-old male patient who went into shock and cardiac arrest 2 wk after surgical repair of an atrial septal defect. Cardiac tamponade was diagnosed and promptly treated, and his hemodynamic status stabilized 4 hr after the initial presentation of shock; however, paraplegia was found when the patient regained consciousness. Physicians should be alert to a possible diagnosis of spinal cord infarction in patients with complications of cardiovascular surgery, particularly when a new onset of neurologic symptoms or signs occurs.

Cardiac tamponade is a poorly recognized complication of central venous catheterization associated with a high mortality. We present a case of fatal cardiac tamponade after intra- pericardial infusion of total parenteral nutrition in a patient who had two central venous catheters. We suggest that catheter tip position should always be confirmed before use of a catheter. Tamponade should be suspected in a patient who deteriorates when a central venous catheter is used and resuscitation via the catheter should be avoided.
