ENCEPHALITOZOON CUNICULI INFECTION IN A BLACK-FOOTED FERRET (MUSTELA NIGRIPES) KIT.

A 47-day-old black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) kit was found dead in June 2016. Histologic examination revealed pyogranulomatous tubulointerstitial nephritis, pneumonia, and encephalitis, with intralesional microsporidia. Transmission electron microscopic examination showed microsporidia with ultrastructural characteristics consistent with Encephalitozoon spp. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and direct sequencing confirmed the presence of Encephalitozoon cuniculi genotype II. This organism has been reported in other Carnivora (i.e., canids, felids, mustelids, procyonids, otariids). In hum…

Visual field defects in albino ferrets (Mustela putorius furo).

The extent of the horizontal visual field was determined behaviourally in 4 pigmented and 5 albino ferrets (Mustela putorius furo, Carnivora, Mammalia) using perimetry. During binocular vision, all pigmented and three albino ferrets responded equally well to stimuli presented anywhere along the horizontal perimeter in the central 180 degrees of the visual field. The remaining two albinos had a visual field defect in the right hemifield (>30 degrees eccentricity). During monocular vision, a significant difference between the visual fields of pigmented and albino ferrets became apparent. In pigm…

Preventing Plague, Bringing Balance: Wildlife Protection as Public Health in the Interwar Union of South Africa.

This article proposes a new line of enquiry in the history of animal conservation by suggesting that African wildlife protection was a form of public health in the early twentieth century. Through examining the activities of South African epidemiologists, politicians, bureaucrats, farmers, and zoologists in the 1920s and 1930s, the author argues that wildlife was integrated into epidemiological strategies and agricultural modes of production. Against the backdrop of a series of plague outbreaks, carnivora once deemed "vermin" were legally protected as sources of human health and agricultural w…

Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza A virus infection associated with respiratory signs in sloth bears (Melursus ursinus).

In 2009, a pandemic influenza A virus (pH1N1) spread globally in humans and infected a broad range of captive animals with close human conta … length sequences from available non-human, non-swine hosts, representing four families in the order Carnivora and one order of birds. A combination of phylogenetic and epidemiological evidence strongly suggests the sloth bear was infected with a human-origin pH1N1 virus, supporting the implementation of biosecurity measures to protect human and animal healt …

Genomic sequence of the class II region of the canine MHC: comparison with the MHC of other mammalian species.

The domestic dog, Canis familiaris, is an excellent model species in which to study complex inherited diseases, having over 200 recognized b … rearrangement and duplication and gives an insight into the evolution of the DR region in the order Carnivora. Elucidation of functionally important dog class II genes and the identification of 23 microsatellite markers spanning this region will contribute significantly to the study of canine diseases that have an immune component.

First occurrence of Schistosomatidae infecting Aplexa hypnorum (Gastropoda, Physidae) in France.

Due to the recrudescence of cercarial dermatitis in the world, larval Schistosomatidae have been researched during 20 months in gastropods o … m is inferior to that of the body. Only cercariae of Heterobilharzia americana, Schistosomatidae of Carnivora in America, have also these two features. This species, not described in Physidae, is an agent of the human cercarial dermatitis. Schistosomatid cercariae in american species of Physidae have been compared with that of A. hypnorum. Brevifurcate ocel …

Detection of pathogenic Leptospira spp. in unconventional pets.

Leptospirosis is a disease caused by Leptospira spp. responsible for considerable impacts on the public and animal health. In the past two decades, non-domesticated species of pets (unconventional pets) have become popular. However, the role of these unconventional pets on maintaining diseases still unclear. Therefore, the objective of this study was to survey the presence of Leptospira spp. DNA in unconventional pets. Samples of kidney tissues from 29 animals belonging to the Mammalia class (including Orders Carnivora, Lagomorpha and Rodentia) were analyzed for the presence of the gene lipL32…

Australian hookworms (Ancylostomatoidea): a review of the species present, their distributions and biogeographical origins.

Ancylostomatoidea or hookworms recorded in Australia are reviewed and the attempt is made to provide the biogeographical background to their occurrence. The poor representation of this nematode superfamily is probably a reflection of the fact that they are primarily parasites of Carnivora, Artiodactyla, Insectivora, Rodentia, Edentata, Proboscoidea and primates, eutherian mammals which are either absent from the Australian fauna or which have only recently reached the continent. The principal genera of hookworms recorded to date from Australia are Ancylostoma, Bunostomum, Necator and Uncinaria…

The prevalence of Balantidium coli infection in fifty-six mammalian species.

A total of 375 fecal samples of 56 mammalian species belonging to 17 families of 4 orders were examined for the detection of Balantidium col … from a chimpanzee (1,230/g feces). No B. coli was detected from the animals of orders Rodentia and Carnivora including dogs and cats. The rarity of B. coli infection in breeding animals in Japan. suggests that there is no serious problem in controlling infections.

Status of trichinosis in bears in the Atlantic provinces of Canada 1971--1976.

During 1971 to 1976 inclusive, 73 black bears, Ursus americanus and one polar bear, Thalarctos maritimus, originating in the Atlantic Provinces of Canada were examined for the presence of trichinosis. The polar bear was infected but all of the black bears were negative.

Paragonimus westermanni in tigers (Panthera tigris) in India.

Paragonimus westermanni was found in the lungs of two young tigers (Panthera tigris). Cysts were focally distributed in the lungs, initiating an emphysematous response together with extensive fibrosis in the vicinity of the cysts.
