The aim of the research was to analyze the relationships of religious comfort and struggle with state anxiety and satisfaction with life in homosexual and heterosexual samples of men. A hundred and eight men aged between 18 and 43 participated in the research in total, 54 declared themselves as homosexual and 54 as heterosexual. The Religious Comfort and Strain Scale, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Satisfaction with Life Scale were applied to the research. OBJECTIVES: To assess the impact of rotating at a Catholic vs non-religious institution for the inpatient portion of the third-year medical school obstetrics and gynecology clerkship on medical students' contraceptive competency.
STUDY DESIGN: We assigned all medical students completing an obstetrics and gynecology clerkship during the 2017-2019 academic years to a Catholic or non-religious hospital for their inpatient teaching site, where they gain much of their contraceptive counseling experience. All students attended the same didactic sessions on contraception. We compared Objective Struc

This article reviews the competition of two natural family planning methods in the mid-1970s when the Catholic Natural Family Planning program was underway in Korea. The Catholic Church, emphasizing the natural law, has recommended Natural Family Planning (NFP), a method of regulating childbirth by abstinence during the fertile period, since the mid-twentieth century. However, a group of gynecologists working at St. Mary's Hospital, a Catholic general hospital in Korea, questioned the utility of NFP. As an alternative, they proposed the method of Ovulation Regulation (OR), which regulates the

Many have studied Roman Catholic clergy who have sexually abused children, but the range of investigations remains disconnected. This article brings together various disciplinary perspectives to form a comprehensive view. A review of the literature is first undertaken to comprehend how clergy offenders have been conceptualized in psychosocial, sociocultural, and moral-religious studies. These perspectives are then used as a foundation for examining how these clergy can be rehabilitated. Three rehabilitative modalities--psychological treatment, rehabilitation through restorative justice, and ri

This article analyzes the inquisitorial trial of Maria Duran, a Catalan novice in the Dominican convent of Nossa Senhora do Paraíso in Portugal. Maria Duran was arrested by the Inquisition in 1741 and, after a lengthy trial, condemned in 1744 to a public lashing and exile. She was suspected of having made a pact with the Devil and was accused by many female witnesses of possessing a "secret penis" that she had allegedly used in her amorous relations with fellow nuns and novices. Her voluminous trial dossier offers a rare and fascinating documentary insight into the often extreme reactions that

Scripture can enlighten us on the difficult times Catholic healthcare providers face today. Two stories from Mark's Gospel offer helpful insights to persons engaged in the institutional context of healing. These stories are of the woman with the "flow of blood" (Mk 5:25-34) and of the Syro-Phoenician woman (Mk 7:24-30). The women were determined to receive the healing they needed. They went for it, and got it, despite considerable obstacles. I suggest five insights we might draw from these two narratives of healing. These women were persistent. Sometimes it takes a great deal of persistence to

OBJECTIVES: To create a reference guide for six of the major U.S. religions for use by reproductive health specialists to provide patient-centered care for a culturally diverse patient population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We utilized primary source reviews of various religious texts and verified electronic databases to examine perspectives on use of, in vitro fertilization (IVF), intrauterine insemination (IUI), sterilization procedures such as vasectomy and tubal ligation, and surrogacy for six major U.S. religions: Catholicism, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS), Hinduism, …

The issue of sexual abuse of minors in the Catholic Church is widely discussed in the media. Nevertheless, the term ‛priest-pedophile'has been used inaccurately to identify perpetrators. There is very little research directly dealing with this group of offenders among Catholic clergy, and we do not yet have any theory that would adequately explain this type of behavior. Attempts to psychologically characterize priests who sexually abuse minors have brought limited success so far. The purpose of this article is to present the most important issues and clinical dilemmas related to the diagnosis

St. Catherine of Siena suffered from an extreme form of holy fasting, a condition classified as anorexia mirabilis (also known as inedia prodigiosa). Historical and medical scholarships alike have drawn a comparison between this primaeval type of anorexia with a relatively common form of eating disorder among young women in the modern world, anorexia nervosa. St. Catherine's condition was characterised by a disgust for sweet taste, a condition also described in anorexia nervosa, and characterised by specific neurophysiological changes in the brain. St. Catherine's case may be considered one of

BACKGROUND: As the number of U.S. Catholic-affiliated hospitals increases, more patients who receive care at Catholic hospitals may face restrictions to reproductive healthcare services, including postpartum contraception and sterilization. Little is known about how Catholic hospital affiliation affects the likelihood of a short-interval pregnancy following a delivery. A short interpregnancy interval is associated with poor obstetric outcomes in subsequent pregnancies.
METHODS: In this retrospective study of Medicaid claims data, we examined if an index delivery at a Catholic-affiliated hospi

"Conscientious provision" refers to situations in which clinicians wish to provide legal and professionally accepted treatments prohibited within their (usually Catholic) health care institutions. It mirrors "conscientious objection," which refers to situations in which clinicians refuse to provide legal and professionally accepted treatments offered within their (usually secular) health care institutions. Conscientious provision is not protected by law, but conscientious objection is. In practice, this asymmetry privileges conservative religious or moral values (usually associated with object

AIMS: The aims of this study were to quantify donors among the investigated area, quantify arguments and myths about the donation and transplantation process, and fix predetermined donation variables in a logistical model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used an analytical, prospective design, using 848 students from 13 high schools in the Velez Sarsfield Hospital area in an open-closed inquiry.
RESULTS: Females were 57.74% and average age was 16.64 +/- 0.06 years, including 65.09% Catholics. The 642 potential donors represented 75% of the study population with the fundamental aim being to "give l

AIMS: Our aim is to define the ecstasies (raptures) of Teresa de Ahumada (Teresa of Jesus) and to link them with ecstasies recently identified as convulsive seizures (Dostoevsky s epilepsy, Saint Paul s disease, ecstatic epilepsy).
DEVELOPMENT AND CONCLUSIONS: We review the Carmelite nun's pathography, with special attention given to the excellent detailed descriptions of her ecstasies. The stereotypic movements and comparison with similar cases leads us to consider them as being epileptic, possibly secondary to neurocysticercosis.

AIDS is unique in that it is terminal, transmissible, and surrounded by stigma. AIDS patients are often ostracized by those close to them and frequently they are alienated from religion. The pastoral care giver must provide a special ministry to AIDS patients, a ministry in which he or she accompanies the patient on a journey inward. This journey involves a broad range of feelings related to such concerns as social alienation, emotional isolation, and preparation for death. Its final destination, however, lies in the ultimate issues such as self-identity, the meaning of life, and individual de
