74 patients were treated with a Halo-thoracic brace in the Department of Traumatology of the AK St. Georg between 1980 and 1986. Of these, 61 had fractures of the cervical spine, nine had tumor-osteolysis, and four had inflammatory destructions of the vertebrae. In almost all cases of fractures of the upper cervical spine (C0-C2) bone healing occurred with applying the Halo fixation alone. In the middle and lower cervical spine, however, secondary operative measures were often necessary because of persistent instabilities, redislocations or neurologic disturbances. New experience in the pallia

The development of the second cervical vertebra is complex. The dens (odontoid process) develops two primary ossification centers that usually coalesce within three months following birth. These centers are separated from the primary ossification center of the vertebral centrum by a cartilaginous region--the dentocentral synchondrosis. This synchondrosis is a slow growing, bipolar physis similar to the triradiate cartilage of the acetabulum. It contributes to the overall heights of both the dens as well as the vertebral body. Anatomically the dentocentral synchondrosis is below the level of th

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study was to simulate different types of cervical vertebra loading and to find out whether mechanical … ion process of the Z-joint. All locations are known as areas of osteophyte formation in degenerated cervical vertebrae.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The theoretical model developed during this study corresponded well with human spine behaviour in terms of predilection sites for osteodegenerative changes, as observed in clinical practice. A mathematical simulation of …

The hypothesis of this research was that elderly people with many remaining teeth and good occlusion (8020 achievers) would be able to maintain proper head and body posture, despite aging. The purpose of this study, as a first stage, was to clarify the aging phenomenon of cervical curvature in 8020 achievers in comparison with that in young adults. Subjects consisted of twenty-eight 8020 achievers, with a mean age of 82.96+/-3.3 years and 26.5+/-4.0 teeth. For comparison, forty adults in their 20's with a mean age of 22.9+/-0.7 years and 28.2+/-0.6 teeth were also enrolled. The cervical verteb

The aim of our study was to compare the diagnostic capacities of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnostic evaluation of acute cervical spinal column injuries. We examined 39 patients with cervical spine injury suspected either clinically or by plain radiography, or even confirmed. In 30 patients, 86 acute traumatic lesions were observed in the area of the cervical spine, 83% of which were retrospectively recognisable by CT and 95% on MRI films. In nine patients, no acute traumatic pathologic pattern could be found either by CT or by MRI or any other subse

It is well known that the recurrent laryngeal nerve is often damaged during or following an anterior approach to the cervical vertebral column. Reports in the literature suggest that the right-sided approach gives rise to more complications of the recurrent nerve than the left-sided approach and that the right recurrent nerve is in a less protected position. There are also studies addressing the risks involved in the right-sided and the left-sided approach and suggesting the opposite conclusion. In our study, the position of the recurrent nerve was found to be variable and even to be different

The essential part of the research lay in ascertaining the sort of forces damaging in an injury of the cervical vertebral column and the circumstances under which this can also lead to spinal cord injury. Further study was devoted to the assessment of the force with which a certain part of the cervical vertebral column resists the injuring forces and in what manner it contributes to the final state of injury. The results of this research made it possible to lay down the principles of prevention from as well as treatment of the cervical vertebral column and spinal cord injury.

Narrow axis, an inherited anomaly resulting in a marked narrowing of the second cervical vertebra, has been observed in strain X/J rabbits. This condition is first recognizable on X rays at 32-33 days gestation. For size comparisons 21 measurements of the first five cervical vertebrae were taken on the skeletons of each of 14 strain X/J animals (7 normal and 7 with narrow axis) and 14 IIIC/J animals for control at two months of age and 27 strain X/J (11 normal and 16 narrow axis) and 14 strain IIIC/J at seven months of age. The primary effect appeared to be a premature fusion of the centrum wi…

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the correlation between the degree of cervical spinal cord compression and gender, age, height of intervertebral space and the abnormality curvature of cervical vertebrae. The multivariable linear regression was used to build the prediction model of cervical spinal cord compression.
METHODS: One hundred and twenty patients with cervical spondylosis were divided into 4 groups according to the degree of spinal cord compression. To measure the sagittal diameter of spinal cord (a) and medulla-pons junction (M) in MRI individually, and then calculate the ratio of a/M; accordi…

Since April, 1990, the authors have been reporting a surgical technique for anterior cervical fusion utilizing autogenous bone graft from the cervical vertebrae. This series included 53 patients (40 males and 13 females). The age ranged from 24 to 72 years with a mean of 49 years. There were 42 cases of cervical disc disease, and 11 cases of cervical disc disease with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL). The patient was out of bed within two days and treated in a soft collar for 3 months. In all patients, the symptoms improved postoperatively. Postoperative X-ray showed …

OBJECTIVES: To study the characteristics of the relationship between injury and disease in forensic identification cases of cervical trauma with cervical vertebra degeneration, and to explore the problems about how to identify the participation rates of injury and disease using the clinical information, forensic examination and imaging examination.
METHODS: Seventeen forensic identification cases of cervical trauma with cervical vertebra degeneration were collected. The age distributions, injury formations, injury severities and imaging findings of these cases were analyzed and the relationsh

CASE: We experienced a rare case of thoracic outlet syndrome caused by bilateral cervical ribs (CR) arising from the 8th cervical vertebra and resected using a supraclavicular approach. Eight months after the left surgery, the remnant of the CR, which could not be removed, was enlarged and compressed the neurovascular bundle again. Reoperation was performed using a transaxillary endoscopic approach. The patient had no symptoms or recurrence 5 years after the final surgery.
CONCLUSION: The 8th cervical vertebra is rarely encountered. The transaxillary endoscopic approach was helpful for resect

BACKGROUND: Radiographic studies of Persian cat's cervical vertebrae can provide us with valuable information used in identifying its anatomical features, investigating various species of Persian cats and evaluating their cervical pathologies.
OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to investigate the anatomical and radiological features of cervical vertebrae in Persian cats to create a comprehensive and accurate reference for the normal range of cervical bones and joints that can be used for clinical decision-making and interpretation of radiographic findings in these cats.
METHODS: The present…

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of modified recapping laminoplasty preserving the continuity of supraspinous ligament in the treatment of intraspinal benign tumors in upper cervical vertebrae and its influence on the stability of the cervical vertebrae.
METHODS: The clinical data of 13 patients with intraspinal benign tumors in upper cervical vertebrae treated between January 2012 and January 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. There were 5 males and 8 females, the age ranged from 21 to 78 years, with an average of 47.3 years. The disease duration ranged from 6 to 53 months, with an …
