Exploring Senolytic and Senomorphic Properties of Medicinal Plants for Anti-Aging Therapies.

Senolytic and senomorphic therapies have gained more and more attention in the last decade. This kind of therapy is based on the killing of cellular senescent cells without harming the "normal" cells. Aging is not a disease. Clinical studies on healthy people will be difficult to conduct. Therefore, one possibility is to draw on the large repertoire of medicinal plants and use their senolytic properties to provide mild anti-aging therapies. Chamomile, goldenrod, reishi, and green tea were tested for their ability to trigger senolysis. Quercetin was used as control substance. Cellular senescenc…

Lousicidal, ovicidal and repellent efficacy of some essential oils against lice and flies infesting water buffaloes in Egypt.

The lousicidal and repellent effects of five essential oils were investigated for the first time against the buffalo louse, Haematopinus tuberculatus, and flies infesting water buffaloes in Qalyubia Governorate, Egypt. For the in vitro studies, filter paper contact bioassays were used to test the oils and their lethal activities were compared with that of d-phenothrin. Four minutes post-treatment, the median lethal concentration, LC50, values were 2.74, 7.28, 12.35, 18.67 and 22.79% for camphor (Cinnamomum camphora), onion (Allium cepa), peppermint (Mentha piperita), chamomile (Matricaria cham…

The Effect of Aromatherapy on Fatigue and Sleep Quality in Intensive Care Nurses: A Randomised Placebo-Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Intensive care nurses are at high risk of fatigue and sleep disturbances due to irregular shift patterns and high levels of occupational stress. Although aromatherapy is increasingly used as a holistic intervention, evidence regarding its effects on fatigue and sleep quality among nurses remains limited. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a chamomile-lavender essential oil blend and vetiver oil on fatigue and sleep quality in intensive care nurses experiencing fatigue and sleep disturbances. STUDY DESIGN: A randomised, placebo-controlled, single-blind mixed-methods …

Sustainable Use of Greek Herbs By-Products, as an Alternative Source of Biologically Active Ingredients for Innovative Products.

The processing of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) results in the production of a significant amount of plant by-products; herbal material of inferior quality and/or unusable plant parts that are not commercially exploitable. An extensive study of Greek native species was performed toward the production of innovative bioactive products using as raw materials the by-products obtained from the processing of cultivated MAPs. Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum (oregano), Sideritis scardica (Greek mountain tea), Thymus vulgaris (thyme), and Matricaria recutita (chamomile) were selected due to their…

Quantification of Sesquiterpene Lactones in Asteraceae Plant Extracts: Evaluation of their Allergenic Potential.

Sesquiterpene lactones (SLs), mainly those with an activated exocyclic methylene group, are important allergens in Asteraceae (Compositae) plants. As a screening tool, the Compositae mix, consisting of five Asteraceae plant extracts with allergenic potential (feverfew, tansy, arnica, yarrow, and German chamomile) is part of several national patch test baseline series. However, the SL content of the Compositae mix may vary due to the source material. Therefore, a simple spectrophotometric method for the quantitative measurement of SLs with the α-methylene-γ-butyrolactone moiety was developed, g…

The utility of most of these herbs is based on their purported anti-inflammatory properties. Some of these herbs have proven effects, many have potential benefits, and some may aggravate rosacea.
