Rabies virus diversification in aerial and terrestrial mammals.

Rabies is a fatal zoonotic infection of the central nervous system of mammals and has been known to humans for millennia. The etiological ag … to a wide range of fitness landscapes represented by reservoir species in the orders Carnivora and Chiroptera led to the emergence of the diverse RABV lineages currently found in the sylvatic and urban cycles. Here we study full genome phylogenies and the time to the most recent common ancestor (TMRCA) of the RABVs in the sylvatic and urban cycles. Results …

Demodex carolliae in a colony of Seba's short-tailed bats (Carollia perspicillata): clinical, pathological and parasitological findings.

Seba's short-tailed bats (Carollia perspicillata) are a frugivorous species native to Central and South America. Despite their importance as a reservoir for zoonotic pathogens and their popularity in zoological collection and as research models, there are relatively few reports on non-zoonotic diseases of bats. Mites of the genus Demodex are obligate commensals of the skin of a range of mammals, are highly host-specific and are not associated with clinical disease when present in low numbers. However, infestation with high numbers can result in severe or even fatal disease and substantially af

Molecular survey of herpesviruses in bats from Chile and Spain reveals potentially novel species.

Bats (order Chiroptera) are known as important hosts and reservoirs for several zoonotic viruses. To this date, most virology studies in bats have focused on RNA viruses; consequently, information about DNA viruses is more limited. Herein we surveyed the presence of herpesviruses in blood or spleen samples of three bat species of Spain (n = 31) and five bat species of Chile (n = 50) by using a broad-spectrum nested PCR. Overall, herpesvirus DNA was detected in 9.7% (3/31) bats of Spain and 10.0% (5/50) bats of Chile. Three gammaherpesvirus sequence types were found in bats from Spain, while se…

A perspective on lyssavirus emergence and perpetuation.

Rabies is propagated globally by viruses in the Family Rhabdoviridae, Genus Lyssavirus. These RNA viruses utilize the mammalian central nerv … of Carnivora, with viral global diversity and distribution in toto driven by a wide variety of the Chiroptera. Pathogen diversity is maintained by multiple faunas, and facilitated by pronounced host vagility, as exemplified by the ease of routine daily and seasonal movements by bats. Viral 'ensembles', or subpopulations associated with productive transmissi …

Bats: important reservoir hosts of emerging viruses.

Bats (order Chiroptera, suborders Megachiroptera ["flying foxes"] and Microchiroptera) are abundant, diverse, and geographically widespread. These mammals provide us with resources, but their importance is minimized and many of their populations and species are at risk, even threatened or endangered. Some of their characteristics (food choices, colonial or solitary nature, population structure, ability to fly, seasonal migration and daily movement patterns, torpor and hibernation, life span, roosting behaviors, ability to echolocate, virus susceptibility) make them exquisitely suitable hosts o…

[Bats and Viruses: complex relationships].

With more than 1 200 species, bats and flying foxes (Order Chiroptera) constitute the most important and diverse order of Mammals after Rodents. Many species of bats are insectivorous while others are frugivorous and few of them are hematophagous. Some of these animals fly during the night, others are crepuscular or diurnal. Some fly long distances during seasonal migrations. Many species are colonial cave-dwelling, living in a rather small home range while others are relatively solitary. However, in spite of the importance of bats for terrestrial biotic communities and ecosystem ecology, the …

Morphometrics of the indian false vampire bat (Megaderma lyra) from district Jhelum, Pakistan.

During the present study thirteen Megaderma lyra bats were observed roosting in dark, domed shaped room of Rohtas Fort, district Jhelum. Out of these, six specimens were captured from the roosting site, using hand net. All captured specimens were male. These bats were identified through their unique facial features, an erect and elongated nose-leaf, large oval ears that joined above the forehead and no tail. Mean head and body length of captured specimens was 80 mm, forearm length was 67 mm while average lengths of 3rd, 4th and 5th metacarpals were 51.73 mm, 55.17 mm and 60.42 mm, respectively

First detection of bat-borne Issyk-Kul virus in Europe.

Bats have been gaining attention as potential reservoir hosts of numerous viruses pathogenic to animals and man. Issyk-Kul virus, a member of the family Nairoviridae, was first isolated in the 1970s from vespertilionid bats in Central Asia. Issyk-Kul virus has been described as human-pathogenic virus, causing febrile outbreaks in humans with headaches, myalgia and nausea. Here we describe the detection of a novel strain of Issyk-Kul virus from Eptesicus nilssonii in Germany. This finding indicates for the first time the prevalence of these zoonotic viruses in Europe.

Clutter interference and the integration time of echoes in the echolocating bat, Eptesicus fuscus.

The ability of the echolocating bat, Eptesicus fuscus, to detect a sonar target is affected by the presence of other targets along the same axis at slightly different ranges. If echoes from one target arrive at about the same delay as echoes from another target, clutter interference occurs and one set of echoes masks the other. Although the bat's sonar emissions and the echoes themselves are 2 to 5 ms long, echoes (of approximately equal sensation levels--around 15 dB SL) only interfere with each other if they arrive within 200 to 400 microseconds of the same arrival time. This figure is an es

Variations in the prostate of Molossus molossus during the processes of testicular maturation, regression, and recrudescence: Morphophysiology and hormonal control.

Molossus molossus (Chiroptera: Molossidae) is a species of molossid bat whose males show a period of total testicular regression during the reproductive cycle in western Bahia, Brazil. Testicular regression directly affects the prostate due to the androgen dependence of this organ. During regression, there is a decrease in androgen levels, which leads to morphophysiological changes in the gland. The aim of this study was to analyze the regulation and signaling of the prostate of M. molossus throughout the processes of testicular maturation, regression, and recrudescence. The bat's prostate com…

Bat trypanosomes from Tapajós-Arapiuns Extractive Reserve in Brazilian Amazon.

Trypanosoma comprises flagellates able to infect several mammalian species and is transmitted by several groups of invertebrates. The order Chiroptera can be infected by the subgenera Herpetosoma, Schizotrypanum, Megatrypanum and Trypanozoon. In this study, we described the diversity of bat trypanosomes and inferred phylogenetic relationships among the trypanosomes from bats caught in Tapajós-Arapiuns Extractive Reserve (Resex) in Pará state. Trypanosomes from bats were isolated by means of hemoculture, and the molecular phylogeny was based on the trypanosome barcode (SSUrDNA V7V8 variable reg…

The brain of the common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus murinus (Wagner, 1840): a cytoarchitectural atlas.

The vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, is exceptionally agile and stealthy in nature. Feeding at night on cattle blood, it is a known scourge carrying rabies. It is endowed with a very high neocortical volume among bats, acute olfactory capabilities and an accessory olfactory system. These characteristics have resulted into an impressive number of neuroanatomical investigations except a long due atlas on its brain. This study presents a cytoarchitectural atlas of the brain of the common vampire, Desmodus rotundus murinus, in the frontal plane, serially between the olfactory bulb and the medulla o

Diversification in small mammals is associated with climatic specialisation, whereas species accumulation reflects evolutionary time.

Climatic specialisation, the restriction of species to particular climate regimes, may promote diversification via ecological divergence and dispersal limitation, but also increase extinction risk. To evaluate how climatic specialisation relates to diversification patterns in small mammals, a vertebrate group widely used in palaeoecological research, we analyse 4231 species belonging to the orders Rodentia, Chiroptera, Eulipotyphla, and Lagomorpha worldwide, combining climatic, geographic, and phylogenetic data. We find that nearly 40% of small mammal species are climatic specialists (restrict…

Bat IFITM3 restriction depends on S-palmitoylation and a polymorphic site within the CD225 domain.

Host interferon-induced transmembrane proteins (IFITMs) are broad-spectrum antiviral restriction factors. Of these, IFITM3 potently inhibits viruses that enter cells through acidic endosomes, many of which are zoonotic and emerging viruses with bats (order Chiroptera) as their natural hosts. We previously demonstrated that microbat IFITM3 is antiviral. Here, we show that bat IFITMs are characterized by strong adaptive evolution and identify a highly variable and functionally important site-codon 70-within the conserved CD225 domain of IFITMs. Mutation of this residue in microbat IFITM3 impairs…

Characterizing Pneumocystis in the lungs of bats: understanding Pneumocystis evolution and the spread of Pneumocystis organisms in mammal populations.

Bats belong to a wide variety of species and occupy diversified habitats, from cities to the countryside. Their different diets (i.e., nectarivore, frugivore, insectivore, hematophage) lead Chiroptera to colonize a range of ecological niches. These flying mammals exert an undisputable impact on both ecosystems and circulation of pathogens that they harbor. Pneumocystis species are recognized as major opportunistic fungal pathogens which cause life-threatening pneumonia in severely immunocompromised or weakened mammals. Pneumocystis consists of a heterogeneous group of highly adapted host-speci…
