The chemical industry generates chlorine-containing tail gas streams on a million-ton scale. Following the established linear approach, these streams are neutralized, consuming large quantities of caustic soda (NaOH), thereby producing waste streams of lower value. This study aims to evaluate the dynamic impact of FC and organic load on the generation of haloacetic acids (HAAs) and trihalomethanes (THMs) in simulated wash water. A new beam-assisted process for removing silicon from a surface in the nanometer scale in a conventional scanning electron microscope is presented. This approach is based on focused electron beam induced etching with pure chlorine gas being used as the precursor. The gas chromatographic determination of trace gaseous impurities in highly reactive fluorinated gaseous matrices presents unique requirements to both equipment and techniques. Especially problematic are the gases normally present in ambient air namely oxygen and nitrogen. Analysing these gases at the low microl/l (ppm) level requires special equipment and this publication describes a custom-designed system utilising backflush column switching to protect the columns and detectors. A thermal conductivity detector with nickel filaments was used to determine ppm levels of impurities in ClF3.
