BACKGROUND: Neonatal intrahepatic cholestasis with citrin deficiency (NICCD) results in coagulopathy due to decreased levels of vitamin (V)K-dependent clotting factors, similar to biliary atresia (BA). However, the involvement of VK-independent coagulant and anticoagulant factor(s) remains unknown. We examined relationships between coagulant and anticoagulant potential before and after nutritional treatment in NICCD.
METHODS: Three cases (aged 12, 21, and 45 days) with NICCD-associated coagulopathy were evaluated with standard coagulation/anticoagulation tests and comprehensive coagulation as

BACKGROUND: Hereditary spherocytosis (HS) is not a rare disease in the department of hematology; however, in the late stage of the disease, patients often have very severe cholestasis and are referred to the department of hepatology. Hepatologists may have trouble determining the source of cholestasis, causing treatment difficulties.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report two 20-year-old patients complaining of "skin and eyes turned to yellow". Patient 1 had no previous hematologic disorders, and patient 2 had a history of anemia without treatment. Laboratory tests suggested anemia and elevated bilirubi

Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is a common disorder in the second half of pregnancy characterized by pruritus and elevated serum bile acids (BAs) with spontaneous resolution after delivery. ICP carries a risk of adverse effects on the fetus which correlates with the degree of BA elevation. ICP occurs in genetically susceptible women as the reproductive hormones increase during pregnancy. Ursodeoxycholic acid is still considered the first-line treatment for ICP though it is of unproven benefit in preventing adverse effects on the fetus. Fetal complications, such as stillbirth, incr

INTRODUCTION: Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is a pregnancy-associated hepatic disorder characterized by pruritus in the setting of elevated serum bile acids (BA). Risk factors for the disease include preexisting hepatobiliary disease, personal or family history of ICP, and advanced maternal age. Recent data suggests that patients with severe ICP (BA ≥100 μmol/L) have a higher risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes including stillbirth.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients diagnosed with ICP between 2012 and 2019 at a tertiary referral center. ICP w

AIM: Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is considered a high-risk condition because it may have serious consequences for the fetus health. ICP is characterized by the accumulation of bile acids in maternal serum which contribute to an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species and the antioxidant defenses increasing the oxidative stress experienced by the fetus. Previously, it was reported a significant decrease in plasma coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) in women with ICP. CoQ10 is a redox substance integrated in the mitochondrial respiratory chain and is recognized as a potent a

AIM: Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is the most common liver disease in pregnancy. Although it was shown that multiple pregnancy and hormone therapies increase the risk of ICP, there is limited information that compared spontaneous fertilization and in vitro fertilization (IVF) from the aspect of developing ICP. In our study, we investigated the potential relationship between ICP and IVF/ spontaneous pregnancy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the records (between June 2007 and December 2014) of pregnancies with ICP who were referred to gastroenterology clinics in three differe

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis type 2 (PFIC2) results from genetic defects of the hepatobiliary bile salt export pump (BSEP, ABCB11) at chromosome 2q24. Patients with progressive cholestasis and liver cirrhosis usually need liver transplantation in the first decade. Mutations in ABCB11 are also associated with benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis type 2 and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy in adult patients. We aimed to make the prenatal diagnosis of PFIC2.
METHODS: Genetic diagnosis was performed by genomic DNA analysis. Prenatal genetic diagnosis

OBJECTIVE: To review animal and human data available regarding the etiology, maternal and fetal impact, and treatment of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP).
METHODS: Pertinent studies on human and animal models of ICP were selected through a MEDLINE database search, focusing on etiology and clinical impact of the disease. Analytic and descriptive studies were included, and the data were analyzed looking for crude numbers.
RESULTS: Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy is a pregnancy-specific disorder. Its prevalence is higher in Chile and Sweden compared with any other population. I

Sickle cell intrahepatic cholestasis is a rare but potentially fatal complication of sickle cell disease. Its characteristic features include hepatomegaly, extreme total hyperbilirubinemia, coagulopathy, and acute liver failure. Although the pathophysiology is uncertain, most reports in the medical literature indicate that the prognosis is grim. The only effective therapy that has been reported in this setting is exchange transfusion. We describe two hemoglobin SS patients with sickle cell intrahepatic cholestasis. We conclude that exchange transfusion and supportive care aimed at correction o

The clinical findings in 33 patients with progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC) are presented. Symptoms developed almost invariably before 6 months of age with severe pruritus and moderate jaundice. Other clinical findings included wheezing and nosebleeds, fat-soluble vitamin deficiency states, and cholelithiasis. Lower values for gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, averaging 15 IU/L before the administration of phenobarbital, and cholesterol, which averaged 156 mg/dl, are helpful in distinguishing PFIC from other pediatric cholestatic liver diseases. Autosomal recessive inheritance

BACKGROUND: Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is a pregnancy-specific disorder, prominently characterized by elevated serum bile acids and adverse fetal outcomes. This study focused on the expression of Delta-like 1(DLK1) in the placenta of patients with ICP,along with the alterations in placental blood vessels and function. The bile acid - induced ICP cell model was utilized to clarify the impact of DLK1 on the function of trophoblast cells under the pathological context of ICP.
METHODS: Human placental tissues were subjected to immunohistochemical staining, immunofluorescence, Wes

Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is a liver condition commonly occurring during pregnancy, with an unclear etiology. This condition not only causes significant discomfort for the mother due to severe itching but also poses serious risks to the fetus. Effective and timely management of ICP, including diagnosis, consistent monitoring, and treatment, is crucial to mitigate maternal discomfort and prevent fetal complications. The challenges in managing ICP include the absence of clear initial diagnostic criteria, delays in lab results, evolving treatment guidelines, and the financial bu

Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is a rare, potentially fatal liver disorder that occurs in late pregnancy. It is characterized by pruritus, jaundice, and elevated liver enzymes, with spontaneous relief of signs and symptoms after birth. Early detection and treatment are required due to the potential risk of fetal complications, including fetal death. A 30-year-old woman with deeply icteric sclera and skin scratch marks presented to a gastroenterology-hepatology referral clinic. Her liver enzymes, bilirubin levels, and serum bile acid levels were all abnormally high. She also disclo

Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP), the most common liver disorder of pregnancy, is associated with complications for both a pregnant person and their fetus. The underlying cause is not well understood. The pruritus associated with ICP is uncomfortable for pregnant people; however, the primary concern is the fetal risk. Fetal risks include preterm labor and birth and intrauterine fetal demise. This is particularly significant for certain populations because of the disparities in incidence of ICP; in the United States, it disproportionately affects Latinx people, the largest and fastes

BACKGROUND: Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is characterised by otherwise unexplained maternal pruritus, increased serum bile acid concentration over 10 μmol/L and spontaneous relief of symptoms and liver abnormalities after delivery. It occurs most frequently during the third trimester and is usually not induced by medication. Besides, azathioprine is recommended as first-line immunosuppressant in patients with steroid-dependent inflammatory bowel disease and is allowed during pregnancy, in order to stabilize maternal disease.
METHODS: We reviewed all cases of ICP between 2010 an
