Cartilaginous tumors in the head and neck region are rare. We report the case of a middle-aged man with a progressive swelling in the left c … , and cavernous sinus. Several histologic examinations of biopsy specimens identified the mass as a chondroma. The unusual size and extension of the tumor indicated extensive surgery, but the patient refused. We discuss the natural history of this tumor, and we review the current literature on head and neck chondromas.

We report a case of carpal tunnel syndrome as a result of an extraosseous chondroma in a 47-year-old gentleman. This case demonstrates the importance of clinical examination and occasional radiographs in this not uncommon condition. We also highlight that this well known entrapment syndrome is not only caused by the common causes that we all know, but also any space-occupying lesion in the carpal tunnel compressing the median nerve.

Cytogenetic analysis of a recurrent periosteal chondroma revealed nonreciprocal translocations of both chromosomal segments 12q13-->qter, from one chromosome 12 to 7q32 and from the homologous chromosome 12 to 16q22. The remaining parts of the two chromosomes 12 formed a dicentric chromosome. This is the second reported chondroma with a 12q13-15 rearrangement, and changes of this chromosome region consequently seem to be nonrandom occurrences in chondromas.

Intracranial chondroma is an unusual cartilaginous tumor originating from the base of the skull. We report on two cases of intracranial chondroma that showed delayed contrast enhancement on CT after high-dose administration of contrast medium. This CT feature may be useful to differentiate chondromas from other tumors of the skull base such as meningiomas and neurinomas.

BACKGROUND: Chondroma is a slowly growing, benign cartilaginous tumor which predominantly occurs in long bones of the hands and feet. Primary mediastinal chondroma is rare, especially with Horner's syndrome.
CASE PRESENTATION: We reported the case of a 31-year-old woman with a posterior mediastinum mass associated with Horner's syndrome. After complete dissection of the mass, a pathological diagnosis of the primary mediastinal chondroma was rendered. The patient has shown no local recurrence or distal disease in a 3.5-year follow-up period.

We report an unusual case of a solitary periosteal chondroma presenting as a snapping finger and pain in the ring finger in a 37-year-old man. The snapping symptom was caused by impingement of this solitary chondroma. In this case, the periosteal chondroma was detached due to a finger sprain. Thus, the solitary chondroma was impinged between basal phalanx and extensor tendon, causing the pain and snapping finger. When patients with snapping finger present, CT scans can be helpful to make a correct diagnosis. To the best of our knowledge, this condition has not been described in the PIP joint.

The authors report the case of a 18 years old girl presenting with a carpal tunnel syndrome, with no history of trauma and a progression of the symptoms in 2 months. Surgery was performed and the diagnosis seems to be an extraskeletal chondroma of the hand.

The case is reported of a 75-year old patient with diabetes, who suffered from a typical carpal tunnel syndrome, which was diagnosed by a neurologist. On the X-rays of hand and wrist there were no pathological findings. A small, clinically almost inapparent induration at the palmar and radial side of the wrist was found. A case of Carney syndrome (gastric leiomyosarcoma, functioning extra-adrenal paragangliomas, and pulmonary chondroma) is reported. Radiologists should be aware of the possible association of these three types of lesion. Computed tomography is valuable in the recognition of pulmonary chondromas.

We describe an exceptional case of a frontal convexity chondroma arising at the site of a compound depressed skull fracture operated on 12 years earlier. We conclude that intracranial chondroma should be included in the differential diagnosis of a calcified mass for the patients who had had a compound, depressed skull fracture along the suture line, especially in cases of dural laceration by the fragmented bone.

We report an exceptionally rare case of ureteral stenosis caused by an extraskeletal chondroma. A woman in her 60s underwent laparoscopic hysterectomy for presumed uterine fibroid torsion, but later developed severe right flank pain. Imaging revealed hydronephrosis and ureteral stricture suspicious for tumor. Ureteroscopy with biopsy confirmed chondroma, representing only the second reported case worldwide after 1973.
