The purpose of this study was to compare the expression of O-acetylated sialic acids on normal colonic epithelial cells to that on primary and metastatic human adenocarcinoma of the colon and rectum. Choroid plexus contains an active transport (influx) and a facilitated diffusion (efflux) system for nucleosides. The biosynthesis of the cyanogenic glucosides, linamarin and prunasin, was investigated in linen-flax, peach and cherry-laurel shoots. It was shown that related 2-oximino acids, aldoximes, nitriles and 2-hydroxynitriles were generally good precursors of the aglycone moiety. Studies with double-labelled compounds confirmed the retention of the oximino nitrogen atom from 2-oximinoisovaleric acid and isobutyraldoxime in the biosynthesis of linamarin. A general pathway from amino acids to cyanogenic glucosides involving N-hydroxyamino acids, aldoximes, nitriles and 2-hydroxynitriles is proposed.

Urine specimens from 135 295 infants have been collected on filter papers and tested for 7 abnormal urinary constituents using spot tests and paper chromatography. The method has detected 5 infants with phenylketonuria, 4 with histidinaemia, 5 with cystinuria, 5 with diabetes mellitus, and one with alcaptonuria. Blood spots on filter paper are used to screen for phenylketonuria. We have developed a high pressure liquid chromatographic assay of phenylalanine and tyrosine after elution of these amino acids from filter paper. The analysis time is 20 min. The amino acids are separated using an ion-exchange resin with post-column ortho-phthalaldehyde derivatization and subsequent fluorescence detection. Other common amino acids do not interfere.
