Sex-biased gene expression and recent sex chromosome turnover.

Cichlids are well known for their propensity to radiate generating arrays of morphologically and ecologically diverse species in short evolutionary time. Following this rapid evolutionary pace, cichlids show high rates of sex chromosome turnover. We here studied the evolution of sex-biased gene (SBG) expression in 14 recently diverged taxa of the Lake Tanganyika Tropheini cichlids, which show different XY sex chromosomes. Across species, sex chromosome sequence divergence predates divergence in expression between the sexes. Only one sex chromosome, the oldest, showed signs of demasculinization…

Physiology mediates transcontinental radiations of freshwater fishes.

Adaptive radiations are clades that have rapidly accumulated exceptional species richness and ecological diversity. The ability to access sources of ecological opportunity, such as new habitats, is thought to be essential for their success. Transcontinental lineages of exclusively freshwater fishes, such as the 1,700 species of cichlids distributed across Central and South America, Africa, India, and Madagascar, are some of the most celebrated adaptive radiations. Yet, what features facilitated their dispersal across marine barriers and diversification in geologically young freshwater ecosyste…

Two new myxozoan parasites, Myxobolus mayarum n. sp. and Kudoa mayarum n. sp., infecting the neotropical fish Mayan Cichlid, Mayaheros urophthalmus (Günther, 1862) in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico.

The biodiversity of freshwater fishes is extensive in Mexico; however, knowledge of their associated myxozoan parasites is limited. This study aimed to recognize myxozoan parasites in the endemic fish Mayaheros urophthalmus. Two new species, Myxobolus mayarum n. sp. and Kudoa mayarum n. sp. were described from M. urophthalmus collected in the Celestún Coastal Lagoon and Baldiosera Freshwater Spring from the Yucatán Peninsula. Myxobolus mayarum n. sp. was found in 100 % of the examined fish, infecting the gills, kidney, pectoral fins, and spleen. The spores were round, 11.34 ± 0.67 μm length, 1

A new species of the genus Neolamprologus (Cichliformes: Cichlidae) from Lake Tanganyika.

Lake Tanganyika harbours an exceptionally diverse fauna of cichlids that has arisen through explosive adaptive radiation. During a recent survey at Kasenga and Kombe, Zambia, we discovered an undescribed species of the genus Neolamprologus. The new species is readily distinguished from its congeners by its uniquely developed upper lip, which protrudes conspicuously beyond the lower lip, along with several additional morphological characters. Phylogenetic analysis of the mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 gene showed that specimens of the new species were not recovered as monophyletic; …

Triple trouble? Invasive poeciliid fishes carry the introduced tilapia pathogen Gyrodactylus cichlidarum in the Mexican highlands.

As part of ongoing surveys of the gyrodactylid parasite fauna of freshwater fishes in Mexico, we recorded the infection of three species of poeciliids (Poecilia mexicana, Poeciliopsis gracilis, and Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus [syn.=Heterandria bimaculata]) with Gyrodactylus cichlidarum, a monogenean parasite of cichlid fishes, which has been co-introduced globally with its translocated, African "tilapia" hosts. This tilapia pathogen was found on poeciliid fishes both within their native distribution range in the Gulf of Mexico slope, as well as on invasive species artificially introduced to

Submerged plus maze: A novel test for studying anxiety-like behaviour in fish.

The elevated plus maze is a prominent and well-documented test for studying anxiety in rodents. Fish are becoming more prevalent in studies of anxiety, yet the elevated plus maze has not been adapted and validated for fish. In the present study, we created an aquatic version of the elevated plus maze called the 'submerged plus maze,' which is shaped like a plus symbol with four arms alternating between black and transparent walls. We used convict cichlid fish (Amatitlania nigrofasciata) and administered diazepam to validate the apparatus for studying anxiety-like behaviour. After diazepam expo

Link Between the Adult and the Metacercaria of Clinostomum heluans Braun, 1899 (Trematoda: Clinostomidae) Through DNA Sequences, and its Phylogenetic Position Within the Genus Clinostomum Leidy, 1856.

The phylogenetic position of Clinostomum heluans Braun, 1899 within the genus Clinostomum Leidy, 1856 is reported in this study based on sequences of the barcoding region of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene ( COX1). Additionally, molecular data are used to link the adult and the metacercariae of the species. The metacercariae of C. heluans were found encysted infecting the cichlid fish Australoheros sp. in Minas Gerais, Brazil, whereas the adults were obtained from the mouth cavity of the Great White Egret, Ardea alba, in Campeche, Mexico. The COX1 sequences obtained for t

Comparison of Morphological Characteristics, Histological Tissue Structures, and Intestinal Function Among Eight Ornamental Fish Species Under Identical Aquaculture Conditions.

The intestine, particularly the gut microbiota, and the liver play key roles in digestion, nutrient transformation, and immune regulation in fish. However, limited information is available regarding how different ornamental fish species regulate these systems under identical aquaculture conditions. Therefore, this study systematically compared gut microbiota diversity, structural variation, and predicted ecological functions among eight ornamental fish species reared in the same environment, using 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing combined with digestive enzyme indices and histological analy

Introgression in Lake Malaŵi: increasing the threat of human urogenital schistosomiasis?

For the last 15 years, we have studied the relationships among cichlid snail-eating fishes, intermediate snail-host density, and the prevalence of human infection of Schistosoma haematobium in Lake Malaŵi and concluded that the increase of human infection is correlated with the decrease in snail-eating fishes in the shallow waters of the lake. We postulated that a strain of S. haematobium from other parts of Africa, which was introduced into the Cape Maclear region of Lake Malaŵi by tourists, was compatible with Bulinus nyassanus-which is a close relative of B. truncatus, and interbred with th

Blood and liver biopsy for the non-destructive screening of tilapia lake virus.

Detection of tilapia lake virus (TiLV) in tilapines is mainly from visceral organs of killed fish. However, lethal sampling might not be viable to broodstock and economically important ornamental cichlids. To contribute towards screening of the virus in asymptomatic infected fish, a subclinically infected population of Nile tilapia adults obtained from a local farm was preliminarily tested to compare different non-lethal sampling methods, for example liver biopsy, gill biopsy, fin clip, mucus, faeces and blood for detection of TiLV. Only liver and blood samples gave positive results by PCR. Si…

Scale-stacking in the live-bearer Belonesox belizanus (Poeciliidae).

An incidence of scale-stacking was found in a museum collection of Belonesox belizanus (Poeciliidae) from the Río Tesechocán, Veracruz, México. This phenomenon is thought to be unique to lepidophagous East African cichlids, although no studies have addressed the behaviour in any detail. This finding in B. belizanus, the first in Cyprinodontiformes, indicates Belonesox is able to manipulate scales into stacks in the buccal cavity.

A new myxozoan parasitizing Mesonauta festivus (Cichliformes: Cichlidae) from the lake region in the municipality of Tartarugalzinho, Eastern Amazon, Brazil.

The Amazon is the largest river basin in the world and it is home to the greatest diversity of freshwater fish in the world. Mesonauta festivus is a cichlid popularly known as flag cichlid, widely distributed throughout South America. The diversity of parasites in fish from the Amazon region is still underestimated, due to the high fishes diversity. The Myxozoa class has a universal distribution, with some specimens being pathogenic to some fish. The aim of this work was to describe a new species of Hoferellus in M. festivus. The fish were collected in the lake region, municipality of Tartarug

Sex chromosomes in the tribe Cyprichromini (Teleostei: Cichlidae) of Lake Tanganyika.

Sex determining loci have been described on at least 12 of 22 chromosomes in East African cichlid fishes, indicating a high rate of sex chromosome turnover. To better understand the rates and patterns of sex chromosome replacement, we used new methods to characterize the sex chromosomes of the cichlid tribe Cyprichromini from Lake Tanganyika. Our k-mer based methods successfully identified sex-linked polymorphisms without the need for a reference genome. We confirm the three previously reported sex chromosomes in this group. We determined the polarity of the sex chromosome turnover on LG05 in

Interaction between female mating preferences and predation may explain the maintenance of rare males in the pentamorphic fish Poecilia parae.

Variation in mating preferences coupled with selective predation may allow for the maintenance of alternative mating strategies. Males of the South American live-bearing fish Poecilia parae fall in one of five discrete morphs: red, yellow, blue, stripe-coloured tail (parae) and female mimic (immaculata). Field surveys indicate that the red and yellow morphs are the rarest and that their rarity is consistent across years. We explored the role of variable female mating preference and selective predation by visual predators in explaining the rarity of red and yellow males, and more generally, the
