A 34-year-old woman showed a partially pigmented, greyish-white mass at a position of 1 o'clock behind the iris of her left eye. The lens equator was compressed and focal opacity had developed. A 35-year-old woman had a circumscribed pigmented scleral lesion overlying a pigmented mass in the ciliary body and trabecular meshwork. Sclerectomy and iridocyclectomy were performed. Histologically, the lesion proved to be a melanocytoma. This represents to our knowledge the fourth reported case of scleral extension of a ciliary body melanocytoma.

We performed local resection of a ciliary body tumor, which was diagnosed as pleomorphic adenocarcinoma arising from nonpigmented epithelium of the ciliary body. The patient was a 57-year-old male, and the tumor was found incidentally at an ophthalmologic examination. A 22-month-old girl was found to have a pigmented mass of the ciliary body of the right eye. Five months later the globe was enucleated because of enlargement of the tumor and the appearance of brown pigment on the adjacent epibulbar surface. A 42-year-old woman developed a ciliary body mass which indented the lens equator and produced a dense focal cataract in the right eye. The clinical diagnosis was malignant melanoma of the ciliary body, and the lesion was removed by a large iridocyclectomy. Histopathologic examination revealed an acquired adenoma of the non-pigmented ciliary epithelium. The clinical and histopathologic features of this rare intraocular tumor are discussed with emphasis upon its differentiation from malignant melanoma.

A microsurgical technique of trabeculoiridocyclectomy for malignant tumors of the iris extending to the angle and ciliary body has been reported. With this technique, the lamellar dissection of the sclera anteriorly into the corneal stroma across the limbus permits excision of the trabecula which is involved with the tumor. In addition, the en bloc excision of the lesion avoids the necessity for a corneo-scleral graft because the outer lamellae are preserved. The ultimate value of this procedure must await long-term follow-up in operated cases.

In spite of the fact that balloon cell change has been recognized ophthalmoscopically and histologically in certain posterior choroidal melanomas, the nature and importance of this observation remain controversial. This article provides a clinicopathologic correlation in two cases of ciliary body melanoma with almost total balloon cell transformation. AIM: To demonstrate a rare case of ciliary body leiomyoma in our patient Case report: A 72-year-old female reported to our clinic for a preventive examination, upon which we found a dome-shaped grey-brownish mass on the retinal periphery. After completing gonioscopic and ultrasound examinations, we referred the patient to a specialist facility. We present a case report of a 60-year-old white woman, found to have advanced angle closure glaucoma in the right eye and appositional closure for about half of the left eye and no glaucoma. The remaining angle of the left eye was open with localized heavy pigmentation of the ciliary body band and trabecular meshwork. Ultrasound biomicroscopy showed a ciliary body tumor displacing the iris root centripetally preventing angle closure.

PARTICIPANTS: Forty-one patients with medulloepithelioma.
INTERVENTION: Cryotherapy, plaque radiotherapy, external beam radiotherapy, tumor removal by partial lamellar sclerouvectomy (PLSU), or enucleation.
