Modelling the effects of climate change on the interaction between bacteria and phages with a temperature-dependent lifecycle switch.

Ongoing climate change and human activities alter the population dynamics of pathogenic bacteria in natural environments, increasing the risk of disease transmission. Among the key mechanisms of amplification of bacteria in the environment is the alteration of the natural control by their enemies, bacteriophages. Using mathematical modelling, we explore how climate change and implementation of certain agricultural practices affect interactions of bacteria with phage exhibiting condition-dependent lysogeny, where the type of phage infection lifecycle is determined by the ambient temperature. Prescriptive temporal modeling approach using climate variables to forecast dengue incidence in Córdoba, Colombia.

We present a modeling strategy to forecast the incidence rate of dengue in the department of Córdoba, Colombia, thereby considering the effect of climate variables. A Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average model with exogenous variables (SARIMAX) model is fitted under a cross-validation approach, and we examine the effect of the exogenous variables on the performance of the model. This study uses data of dengue cases, precipitation, and relative humidity reported from years 2007 to 2021. We consider three configurations of sizes training set-test set: 182-13,189-6, and 192-3. Quantifying climatic and socioeconomic drivers of urban malaria in Surat, India: a statistical spatiotemporal modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Cities are becoming increasingly important habitats for mosquito vectors of disease. The pronounced heterogeneity of urban landscapes challenges our understanding of the effects of climate and socioeconomic factors on mosquito-borne disease dynamics at different spatiotemporal scales. Here, we quantify the impact of climatic and socioeconomic factors on urban malaria risk, using an extensive dataset in both space and time for reported Plasmodium falciparum cases in the city of Surat, northwest India. METHODS: We analysed 10 years of monthly P falciparum cases resolved at three nes

Impact of climate change on dengue fever epidemics in South and Southeast Asian settings: A modelling study.

The potential for dengue fever epidemic due to climate change remains uncertain in tropical areas. This study aims to assess the impact of climate change on dengue fever transmission in four South and Southeast Asian settings. We collected weekly data of dengue fever incidence, daily mean temperature and rainfall from 2012 to 2020 in Singapore, Colombo, Selangor, and Chiang Mai. Projections for temperature and rainfall were drawn for three Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP126, SSP245, and SSP585) scenarios. Using a disease transmission model, we projected the dengue fever epidemics until 2090

Machine Learning Models for Predicting the Occurrence of Respiratory Diseases Using Climatic and Air-Pollution Factors.

OBJECTIVES: Because climatic and air-pollution factors are known to influence the occurrence of respiratory diseases, we used these factors to develop machine learning models for predicting the occurrence of respiratory diseases. METHODS: We obtained the daily number of respiratory disease patients in Seoul. We used climatic and air-pollution factors to predict the daily number of patients treated for respiratory diseases per 10,000 inhabitants. We applied the relief-based feature selection algorithm to evaluate the importance of feature selection. We used the gradient boosting and Gaussian p

Projecting the Potential Distribution of Glossinamorsitans (Diptera: Glossinidae) under Climate Change Using the MaxEnt Model.

Glossina morsitans is a vector for Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT), which is mainly distributed in sub-Saharan Africa at present. Our objective was to project the historical and future potentially suitable areas globally and explore the influence of climatic factors. The maximum entropy model (MaxEnt) was utilized to evaluate the contribution rates of bio-climatic factors and to project suitable habitats for G. morsitans. We found that Isothermality and Precipitation of Wettest Quarter contributed most to the distribution of G. morsitans. The predicted potentially suitable areas for G. mor

Dengue situation in India: Suitability and transmission potential model for present and projected climate change scenarios.

Dengue fever is mosquito borne viral disease caused by dengue virus and transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. In recent years the dengue has spread rapidly to several regions and it becomes a major public health menace globally. Dengue transmission is strongly influenced by environmental factors such as temperature and rainfall. In the present study, a climate driven dengue model was developed and predicted areas vulnerable for dengue transmission under the present and future climate change scenarios in India. The study also projected the dengue distribution risk map using representative concentrat

Developing a forecasting model for cholera incidence in Dhaka megacity through time series climate data.

Cholera, an acute diarrheal disease spread by lack of hygiene and contaminated water, is a major public health risk in many countries. As cholera is triggered by environmental conditions influenced by climatic variables, establishing a correlation between cholera incidence and climatic variables would provide an opportunity to develop a cholera forecasting model. Considering the auto-regressive nature and the seasonal behavioral patterns of cholera, a seasonal-auto-regressive-integrated-moving-average (SARIMA) model was used for time-series analysis during 2000-2013. As both rainfall (r = 0.43

Modeling the Impacts of Weather and Cultural Factors on Rotundone Concentration in Cool-Climate Noiret Wine Grapes.

The sesquiterpenoid rotundone is the compound responsible for the "black pepper" aroma of many plant species, including several economically important wine grape varieties. Since its identification in wine in 2008, there has been an increased interest in understanding how individual climatic or cultural factors affect the accumulation of rotundone in grapes and subsequently the level of wine "pepperiness." However, no study has assessed climatic and viticultural factors together to identify which variables have the strongest influence on rotundone accumulation. Our study aimed to fill this kno

Modelling climate change impact on the spatial distribution of fresh water snails hosting trematodes in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Freshwater snails are intermediate hosts for a number of trematodes of which some are of medical and veterinary importance. The trematodes rely on specific species of snails to complete their life cycle; hence the ecology of the snails is a key element in transmission of the parasites. More than 200 million people are infected with schistosomes of which 95% live in sub-Saharan Africa and many more are living in areas where transmission is on-going. Human infection with the Fasciola parasite, usually considered more of veterinary concern, has recently been recognised as a human heal

A growing degree-day model for determination of Fasciola hepatica infection risk in New Zealand with future predictions using climate change models.

Infections of ruminants with Fasciola hepatica are considered to be of regional importance within New Zealand but there is very little recent information on its prevalence or severity other than anecdotal reports. Generally they are considered to be of secondary importance compared to gastrointestinal nematode infections. Utilizing data from Virtual Climate Stations (n=11491) distributed on a 5km grid around New Zealand a growing degree-day model was used to describe the risk of infection with liver fluke from 1972 to 2012 and then to apply the predictions to estimate the risk of fluke infecti

Assessment of climate change impact on the malaria vector Anopheles hyrcanus, West Nile disease, and incidence of melanoma in the Vojvodina Province (Serbia) using data from a regional climate model.

Motivated by the One Health paradigm, we found the expected changes in temperature and UV radiation (UVR) to be a common trigger for enhancing the risk that viruses, vectors, and diseases pose to human and animal health. We compared data from the mosquito field collections and medical studies with regional climate model projections to examine the impact of climate change on the spreading of one malaria vector, the circulation of West Nile virus (WNV), and the incidence of melanoma. We analysed data obtained from ten selected years of standardised mosquito vector sampling with 219 unique locati

A motivational model of sleep disturbance in winter athletes: the roles of motivational climate, basic psychological needs, and burnout.

The present research investigated the associations among motivational climates, basic psychological needs, burnout, and sleep disturbance in winter sports athletes guided by achievement goal theory and self-determination theory. It included 456 participants (263 males, 193 females, aged 18 to 25 years) from three sports universities across five winter sports events. Participants completed four psychological scales related to the study variables. The results indicated that task-involving climate was positively associated with basic psychological needs satisfaction, whereas ego-involving climate

Dengue transmission risk in California under climate and land-use change: a semi-mechanistic modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Dengue cases are increasing in non-endemic regions due to environmental change and increasing travel and trade. For these non-endemic regions, estimating dengue risk is challenging as transmission is driven by both local environmental conditions and the introduction of viremic travelers. In this study, we aimed to estimate current and future dengue risk in California, USA-a region that has recently experienced its first cases of locally-acquired dengue. METHODS: We modeled dengue risk as the product of three key components needed for local transmission-vector presence, temperature

Assessing the impact of climate and control interventions on spatio-temporal malaria dynamics using a stochastic metapopulation model.

Despite intensive malaria control efforts, the lowlands of western Kenya continue to experience high malaria transmission. Spatial and temporal variations in climatic factors, interventions, parasite dispersal, and human travel, influence malaria incidence in moderate-to-high transmission areas. Additionally, population movement facilitates the importation of parasites from endemic to non-endemic areas, sustaining infections where local transmission would otherwise be unsustainable. The aim of this work was to develop a process-based stochastic metapopulation transmission model that accounts f

Spatio-temporal modelling and prediction of malaria incidence in Mozambique using climatic indicators from 2001 to 2018.

Accurate malaria predictions are essential for implementing timely interventions, particularly in Mozambique, where climate factors strongly influence transmission. This study aims to develop and evaluate a spatial-temporal prediction model for malaria incidence in Mozambique for potential use in a malaria early warning system (MEWS). We used monthly data on malaria cases from 2001 to 2018 in Mozambique, the model incorporated lagged climate variables selected through Deviance Information Criterion (DIC), including mean temperature and precipitation (1-2 months), relative humidity (5-6 months)

Assessing climate change impact of blue ammonia via carbon capture and utilization in life cycle modelling.

Ammonia production represents a fundamental aspect of the global chemical industry. It is a significant contributor to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and it is necessary that innovative methods be developed to reduce its climate impact. This study assesses the environmental impact of blue ammonia production incorporating carbon capture and utilization (CCU) through a novel Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach, based on the latest guidelines from the Together for Sustainability (TfS) initiative. This analysis is centred on three systems: grey ammonia (System A), blue ammonia with in-process ca
