Persistent cloaca, fused kidneys, female pseudohermaphroditism and skeletal anomalies in a simmental calf.

A 5-day-old Simmental calf was referred to our department for atresia ani and postural abnormalities caused by skeletal deformities. The calf had a short and deviated tail and a bowed hind limb. The calf appeared like a male because of the prepuce and penis located just near the teats and the absence of female external genitalia. During the necropsy, a horseshoe kidney, single ureter that originated from the kidney, and bilateral uterine horns with one ovary each were detected. The ureter, blind-ended large intestine, and bilateral uterine horns were connected to a dilated cloaca having two sa

The timing of enteric neural crest cell colonisation of the chick embryo cloaca.

Neural crest cell (NCC) migration and formation of the enteric nervous system (ENS) is an essential process in the development of the normal human gut. Abnormalities of the ENS lead to a number of neurochristopathies. In avian embryos, the cloaca acts as a common chamber into which gastrointestinal, urinary and genital tracts emerge. Previous studies have elucidated the specific timeframes at which NCCs reach the various regions of the developing chick gut but, to date, none have looked at NCC colonisation of the cloaca. The aim of our study was to investigate the exact timing of the appearanc

Omphalocele, Exstrophy of Cloaca, Imperforate Anus, and Spinal Defects Complex: A Case Report.

UNLABELLED: Omphalocele, exstrophy of cloaca, imperforate anus, and spinal defects complex is a rare malformation complex that includes omphalocele, cloacal exstrophy, imperforate anus and spinal defects with the incidence of 1 in 200,000 to 400,000 pregnancies and is even rarer in twin gestation. The etiology of this complex is still unclear. Most cases are sporadic. Prenatal screening must be done for diagnosis and appropriate multidisciplinary management of cases. In severe cases, termination of pregnancy is considered. We present a 4-day first twin child with underdeveloped ambiguous genit

Persistent cloaca and caudal duplication in a monovular twin, a rare case report.

INTRODUCTION: A cloaca occurs when genitourinary tract and bowel converge into a common channel. We report a case of partial caudal duplication, persistent cloaca and vestigial appendage in a monovular female twin infant. PRESENTATION OF CASE: This is a monochorinonic-diamniotic twin born at 36 weeks with apgars of 9/9. She had a duplicated labia with two clitorises, and a partially formed accessory foot with 2 toes protruding from the right gluteal region. There was anal atresia and a punctate urethral opening in the right genitalia through which she voided spontaneously. X-ray of the access

Disruption of the temporally regulated cloaca endodermal β-catenin signaling causes anorectal malformations.

The cloaca is temporally formed and eventually divided by the urorectal septum (URS) during urogenital and anorectal organ development. Although congenital malformations, such as anorectal malformations (ARMs), are frequently observed during this process, the underlying pathogenic mechanisms remain unclear. β-Catenin is a critical component of canonical Wnt signaling and is essential for the regulation of cell differentiation and morphogenesis during embryogenesis. The expression of β-catenin is observed in endodermal epithelia, including URS epithelia. We modulated the β-catenin gene conditio

Overlapping sphincteroplasty and modified lotus petal flap for delayed repair of traumatic cloaca.

Traumatic cloaca is a disabling condition characterized by disruption of the perineal body, anterior sphincter tears and loss of the distal rectovaginal septum. Anterior overlapping sphincteroplasty is the method of choice to treat faecal incontinence caused by obstetric injury. However, reconstruction of large perineal body defects may be a challenging task for surgeons. Herein we describe the successful use of a modified lotus petal flap following overlapping sphincteroplasty to repair a traumatic cloaca that had occurred during vaginal delivery 20 years earlier. After 3 months of follow-up

Exploring nagZ as a virulence biomarker and treatment target in Enterobacter cloacae.

BACKGROUND: Enterobacter cloacae is increasingly prevalent and resistant to multiple antibiotics, making it a significant pathogen in healthcare settings with high mortality rates. However, its pathogenic mechanisms are not fully understood. RESULTS: In this study, we explored the role of nagZ in regulating the virulence of E. cloacae and its potential as a therapeutic target. Our research showed that pathogenic strains of E. cloacae express higher levels of nagZ than colonizing strains, particularly in simulated infection environments. Deleting nagZ significantly reduced E. cloacae virulence

Impact of simulated microgravity on the growth and proteomic profile of Enterobacter cloacae.

Previous studies have shown decreased microbial diversity in astronaut gut microbiomes during spaceflight, raising potential health concerns. Enterobacter cloacae, a commensal member of the human gastrointestinal tract microbiota, has the potential to cause opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. However, little is known about how E. cloacae cells adapt to extreme environments such as microgravity, and whether this bacterium is of medical concern for astronauts during long-term spaceflight missions, as astronaut immune systems are compromised by microgravity. To this end, E. cl

Ulcerative Colitis of the Neovagina in a Toddler with Cloaca and Chronic Kidney Disease.

The case of a toddler with long-channel cloaca, mild chronic kidney disease (CKD) due to renal dysplasia, and early onset of ulcerative colitis (UC) is herein reported. The patient underwent definitive repair of cloaca, that included vaginal elongation with colon, at 5 months of age and was admitted for episodes of vaginal bleeding at 22 months of age. A vaginoscopy revealed a severe inflammation of the colonic neovagina. As rectal bleeding was also noticed, she underwent a colonscopy that showed the same macroscopic inflammatory picture. Neovaginal and colonic biopsies confirmed UC. The mothe

Enterobacter cloacae Sacroiliitis with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome in an Adolescent.

Enterobacter cloacae has emerged as an important nosocomial pathogen, but is rarely a cause of sacroiliitis. Herein, we present the first reported case of Enterobacter cloacae sacroiliitis associated with sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). A previously healthy 14-year-old boy presented with low-grade fever and pain in the left side of the hip that was aggravated by walking. Pelvic computed tomography (CT) showed normal findings, and the patient received supportive care for transient synovitis with no antibiotics. However, there was no clinical improvement. On the third day

Morphogenesis and patterning of the phallus and cloaca in the American alligator, alligator mississippiensis.

In most animals, reproduction by internal fertilization is facilitated by an intromittent organ, such as the penis in amniote vertebrates. Recent progress has begun to uncover the mechanisms of mammalian external genital development; however, comparatively little is known about the development of the reptilian penis and clitoris. Here, we describe the development of the phallus and cloaca in the American alligator, Alligator mississippiensis. The embryonic precursor of the penis and clitoris is the genital tubercle, which forms by the budding of genital mesenchyme beneath the ventral body wall
