Family resilience clusters and quality of life in adolescents and young adults with cancer and their caregivers: a dyadic cluster analysis.

PURPOSE: To identify dyadic patterns of family resilience among adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer and their caregivers, and to explore associated factors and their relationships with quality of life (QoL) in both parties. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited 202 AYA patient-caregiver dyads from four tertiary hospitals in Wuhan and Taiyuan between July 2022 and March 2024. Data were collected through a self-designed general information questionnaire and validated instruments assessing family resilience, individual resilience, social support, and QoL. Family resilience cl

Clustering of gout-related comorbidities and their relationship with gout flares: a data-driven cluster analysis of eight comorbidities.

OBJECTIVES: To study the aggregation of multiple comorbidities in people with gout and explore differences in prognosis of gout flares among different subgroups. METHODS: Hierarchical clustering was performed to identify homogeneous subgroups among 2639 people with gout using eight comorbidities. A one-year follow-up of acute gout flares in 463 of these people was conducted; the incidence and the timing of gout flares in each cluster were assessed to explore prognosis of gout flares. Binary logistic regression was applied to assess factors associated with gout flares. RESULTS: In baseline st

Unraveling the dha cluster in Citrobacter werkmanii: comparative genomic analysis of bacterial 1,3-propanediol biosynthesis clusters.

In natural 1,3-propanediol (PDO) producing microorganisms such as Klebsiella pneumoniae, Citrobacter freundii and Clostridium sp., the genes coding for PDO producing enzymes are grouped in a dha cluster. This article describes the dha cluster of a novel candidate for PDO production, Citrobacter werkmanii DSM17579 and compares the cluster to the currently known PDO clusters of Enterobacteriaceae and Clostridiaceae. Moreover, we attribute a putative function to two previously unannotated ORFs, OrfW and OrfY, both in C. freundii and in C. werkmanii: both proteins might form a complex and support

Regression analysis of clustered failure time data with informative cluster size under the additive transformation models.

This paper discusses regression analysis of clustered failure time data, which occur when the failure times of interest are collected from clusters. In particular, we consider the situation where the correlated failure times of interest may be related to cluster sizes. For inference, we present two estimation procedures, the weighted estimating equation-based method and the within-cluster resampling-based method, when the correlated failure times of interest arise from a class of additive transformation models. The former makes use of the inverse of cluster sizes as weights in the estimating e

Psychoneurological Symptom Clusters in Patients with Cancer: A Concept Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To clarify the concept of psychoneurological (PN) symptom clusters in patients with cancer. METHODS: Walker and Avant's concept analysis method was applied. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and PsycINFO using PN symptom cluster and other symptom- and cancer-related terms identified 51 records for synthesis. Data on defining attributes, antecedents, empirical referents, and consequences were extracted from each record and analyzed for recurrent themes. RESULTS: The defining attributes of PN symptom clusters in cancer are the co-occurrence of two or more interrelat

Traumatic Head Injury and the Diagnosis of Abuse: A Cluster Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Data guiding abusive head trauma (AHT) diagnosis rest on case-control studies that have been criticized for circularity. We wished to sort children with neurologic injury using mathematical algorithms, without reference to physicians' diagnoses or predetermined diagnostic criteria, and to compare the results to existing AHT data, physicians' diagnoses, and a proposed triad of findings. METHODS: Unsupervised cluster analysis of an existing data set regarding 500 young patients with acute head injury hospitalized for intensive care. Three cluster algorithms were used to sort (partit…

Spatial analysis of HIV-TB co-clustering in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death for individuals infected with Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Conversely, HIV is the most important risk factor in the progression of TB from the latent to the active status. In order to manage this double epidemic situation, an integrated approach that includes HIV management in TB patients was proposed by the World Health Organization and was implemented in Uganda (one of the countries endemic with both diseases). To enable targeted intervention using the integrated approach, areas with high disease prevalence rates for TB and H

Analysis of the Cluster Prominence Feature for Detecting Calcifications in Mammograms.

In mammograms, a calcification is represented as small but brilliant white region of the digital image. Earlier detection of malignant calcifications in patients provides high expectation of surviving to this disease. Nevertheless, white regions are difficult to see by visual inspection because a mammogram is a gray-scale image of the breast. To help radiologists in detecting abnormal calcification, computer-inspection methods of mammograms have been proposed; however, it remains an open important issue. In this context, we propose a strategy for detecting calcifications in mammograms based on

Suicide in the oldest old: an observational study and cluster analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The older population are at a high risk for suicide. This study sought to learn more about the characteristics of suicide in the oldest-old and to use a cluster analysis to determine if oldest-old suicide victims assort into clinically meaningful subgroups. METHODS: Data were collected from a coroner's chart review of suicide victims in Toronto from 1998 to 2011. We compared two age groups (65-79 year olds, n = 335, and 80+ year olds, n = 191) and then conducted a hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis using Ward's method to identify distinct clusters in the 80+ group. RESUL…

A cluster analysis of the circumstances of death in suicides in Hong Kong.

Classification of suicides is essential for clinicians to better identify self-harm patients with future suicidal risks. This study examined potential subtypes of suicide in a psychological autopsy sample (N = 148) in Hong Kong. Hierarchical cluster analysis extracted two subgroups of subjects in terms of expressed deliberation assessed by the Beck Suicide Intent Scale (SIS). The first group was associated with charcoal burning suicide, no psychiatric illness, indebtedness, better problem-solving ability, chronic stress, and higher overall SIS scores. The second group was associated with jumpi…

Genome-wide terpene gene clusters analysis in Euphorbiaceae.

Euphorbiaceae species are renowned not only for horticultural significance but for their production of numerous bicyclic diterpenes with antitumor and antiviral activities. However, the gene clusters responsible for the biosynthesis of these terpenes remain largely unidentified. We here initiated the construction of a comprehensive procedure for terpene gene clusters in Euphorbiaceae species. A total of 1824 candidate gene clusters with the range of 30-800 kb were identified across seven representative species including Ricinus communis, Hevea brasiliensis, Euphorbia peplus, Jatropha curcas, M

Spatial and temporal analysis of disease occurrence for detection of clustering.

Data on disease occurrence often consist of the number of cases recorded in a set of regions during each of several time periods. In this paper a method of analysis of such data is proposed which allows one to distinguish and test for spatial clustering, temporal clustering, and space-time clustering of cases. Departures of case numbers from expectation are partitioned into region and time period main effects and region-by-time interactions. Spatial and temporal relationships among regions and time periods are incorporated by pooling estimates over neighborhoods. In addition to providing tests

Cluster analysis of seasonal KL-6 variations in interstitial lung diseases.

BACKGROUND: Serum Krebs von den Lungen-6 (KL-6) is a biomarker that reflects the pathophysiology and activity of interstitial lung disease (ILDs); however, its fluctuation patterns remain understudied. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 910 patients with ILD with at least one year of regular KL-6 measurements. Cluster analysis was performed to identify the distinct annual KL-6 fluctuation patterns. Patient demographics, disease distribution, and prognostic outcomes were compared across clusters. RESULTS: Four distinct clusters of KL-6 patterns were identified: minimal change (…

Data-driven cluster analysis identifies three clinical phenotypes in hemodialysis patients.

Clinical heterogeneity among hemodialysis patients necessitates precision medicine approaches transcending conventional single-parameter management. Through machine learning analysis of 1,207 maintenance hemodialysis patients, we developed a novel two-tier phenotyping framework integrating unsupervised K-means clustering across 22 clinical indicators with supervised classification using six universally available biomarkers. Five mechanistically informed composite indicators were constructed, including the Middle-Small Molecule Clearance Index (β2-microglobulin reduction ratio × Kt/V) and ferri
