Cognitive Inflexibility in OCD and Related Disorders.

Cognitive inflexibility is suggested by the hallmark symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), namely the occurrence of repetitive thoughts and/or behaviours that persist despite being functionally impairing and egodystonic to the individual. As well as being implied by the top-level symptoms, cognitive inflexibility in OCD, and some related conditions, has also been objectively quantified in case-control studies using computerised cognitive tasks. This chapter begins by considering the objective measurement of different aspects of cognitive flexibility using neuropsychological paradigm

Cognitive Impairment in Opium Use Disorder.

This cross-sectional study is aimed at assessing the effects of opium use disorder (OUD) on attention, working memory, and information-processing speed. Thirty outpatients with OUD and 20 healthy controls (HCs) were assessed using a neuropsychological battery consisted of Auditory Verbal Learning Test-Revised (AVLT-R), Brief Visuospatial Memory Test-Revised (BVMT-R), Digit Forward and Backward Tests (DFT and DBT), and WAIS-R Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST). The most affected cognitive functions in patients with OUD were detected by DBT and DSST. However, we found no significant differenc

Neuromodulation for Cognitive Disorders: In Search of Lazarus?

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other forms of dementia can have a large impact on patients, their families, and for the society as a whole. Current medical treatments have not shown enough potential in treating or altering the course of the disease. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has shown great neuromodulatory potential in Parkinson's disease, and there is a growing body of evidence for justifying its use in cognitive disorders. At the same time there is mounting interest at less invasive and alternative modes of neuromodulation for the treatment of AD. This manuscript is a brief review of the in

Subjective cognitive function in hoarding disorder.

The aim of the present study was to examine subjective cognitive impairment among adult patients with hoarding disorder (HD). Eighty-three patients with HD and 46 age- and gender-matched healthy control (HC) participants received a diagnostic interview and completed measures of subjective cognitive functioning and motivations for saving behavior, as well as measures of hoarding severity, depression, anxiety, stress, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms. The HD group reported more impairment than did the HC group in domains of memory, distractibility, blunders, memory for names, and

[Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Eating Disorders].

Cognitive dysfunction such as body-image disturbance and undue influence of body weight on self-worth is a conspicuous feature of eating disorders. The cognitive problems are known to be extremely difficult to treat. Why and how, therefore, is cognitive behavioral ther- apy (CBT) recommended, with high quality evidence, in clinical guidelines such as the NICE guidelines in the UK? In reverse direction to the history of eating disorders, namely anorexia nervosa first and then bulimia, CBT was developed for bulimics first and then after its establishment, the skills were applied to anorexia nerv

Glutamate synapses in human cognitive disorders.

Accumulating data, including those from large genetic association studies, indicate that alterations in glutamatergic synapse structure and function represent a common underlying pathology in many symptomatically distinct cognitive disorders. In this review, we discuss evidence from human genetic studies and data from animal models supporting a role for aberrant glutamatergic synapse function in the etiology of intellectual disability (ID), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and schizophrenia (SCZ), neurodevelopmental disorders that comprise a significant proportion of human cognitive disease and

Cognitive function in peripheral autonomic disorders.

OBJECTIVE: aims of the current study were 1) to evaluate global cognitive function in patients with autonomic failure (AF) of peripheral origin and 2) to investigate the effect of a documented fall in blood pressure (BP) fulfilling the criteria for orthostatic hypotension (OH) on cognitive performances. METHODS: we assessed 12 consecutive patients (10 males, 68±7 years old) with pure AF (PAF) or autoimmune autonomic neuropathy (AAN) and 12 age- and gender-matched controls. All patients had no clinical signs of central nervous system involvement and normal brain CT/MRI scan. Cognitive function

[Cannabis-induced cognitive and psychiatric disorders].

Several studies have shown that Δ-9-THC the main psychoactive constituent of cannabis, can impair cognitive functions, especially attention, episodic memory, working memory and executive functions. These impairments have been related to the duration, frequency, dose and age at onset of cannabis use. Cognitive deficits may disappear with abstinence, but abnormalities may be long-lasting in subjects who began smoking cannabis before age 15. The lifetime prevalence of cannabis use disorders is about 1% in the general population. The main characteristics of cannabis use disorders are craving, pers

Cognitive impairment and dementia in bipolar disorder.

In bipolar disorder (BD), impaired cognition has long been described as a psychopathological feature of abnormal mood states, or accepted as treatment related side-effects. More recently, neuropsychological studies conducted in older adults have led to the recognition that enduring, irreversible cognitive changes do occur in substantial proportion of euthymic patients with life-long BD, relevant enough to warrant the diagnosis of dementia. The increased risk for dementia in BD has been associated with older age and also with factors related to the clinical course of the disease. However, it is

[Cognitive profiles in pervasive developmental disorders].

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the cognitive skills in pervasive developmental disorders (PDD). METHODOLOGY: Two groups of children participated in this study, 39 individuals with autism and 18 individuals with Asperger syndrome. Each participant was assessed by the Wechsler scales: WPPSI-III, WISC-III or WISC-IV. RESULTS: Children with Asperger syndrome have VIQ more than PIQ and the children with autism have VIQ less than PIQ. The performances in "block design" task vary according to the cognitive level and not according to the PDD type. The high-functioning autistic children show high

[Mood and cognitive disorders, and androgen deprivation].

Prostate cancer has become a chronic disease. In this context, it is important to take into account the quality of life of patients and their family in the therapeutic approach. Recent studies have demonstrated the importance of depression and the risk of suicide in patients with prostate cancer as well as the repercussions of the disease on the spouse and their relationship. The implication of hormonal treatment in the increase in risk of depression is difficult to affirm. Few studies have investigated this subject and they present methodological biases. Some authors report an increased risk

Cognitive coping in anxiety-disordered adolescents.

The present study investigated differences in cognitive coping strategies between anxiety-disordered and non-anxious adolescents. In addition, the interaction effect with gender as well as differences between specific anxiety diagnoses was examined. A clinical sample of 159 anxiety-disordered adolescents and a general community sample of 370 non-anxious adolescents were recruited. Nine cognitive coping strategies were assessed in all adolescents (aged 12-16 years). Results showed that anxiety-disordered adolescents had significantly higher scores on most of the cognitive coping strategies than

Cognitive behavioral therapy for eating disorders.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the leading evidence-based treatment for bulimia nervosa. A new "enhanced" version of the treatment appears to be more potent and has the added advantage of being suitable for all eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa and eating disorder not otherwise specified. This article reviews the evidence supporting CBT in the treatment of eating disorders and provides an account of the "transdiagnostic" theory that underpins the enhanced form of the treatment. It ends with an outline of the treatment's main strategies and procedures.

Cognitive coping and childhood anxiety disorders.

To investigate differences in cognitive coping strategies between anxiety-disordered and non-anxious 9-11-year-old children. Additionally, differences in cognitive coping between specific anxiety disorders were examined. A clinical sample of 131 anxiety-disordered children and a general population sample of 452 non-anxious children were gathered. All children filled out the child version of the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ-k). Structured clinical interviews were used to assess childhood anxiety disorders. Results showed that anxiety-disordered children experience significan

Cognitive behavior therapy for panic disorder.

Panic Disorder affects around 3.5% of the population during their lifetime, affecting twice as many women. It is often comorbid with depression and other anxiety disorders. Panic disorder can be assessed by a variety of interviews and self-report questionnaires. The theoretical model underlying CBT explains panic from both a learning perspective as well as a cognitive one. Treatment comprises of both behavioral and cognitive components. Treatment outcome studies show that CBT is an effective, acceptable and cost-effective treatment for Panic Disorder.

Mitochondrial disorders, cognitive impairment and dementia.

The organ most frequently affected in mitochondrial disorders, particularly respiratory chain diseases (RCDs), in addition to the skeletal muscle, is the central nervous system (CNS). CNS manifestations of RCDs comprise stroke-like episodes, epilepsy, migraine, ataxia, spasticity, movement disorders, psychiatric disorders, cognitive decline, or even dementia (mitochondrial dementia). So far mitochondrial dementia has been reported in MELAS, MERRF, LHON, CPEO, KSS, MNGIE, NARP, Leigh syndrome, and Alpers-Huttenlocher disease. Mitochondrial dementia not only results from mutations in the mitocho

Cerebellar disorders in childhood: cognitive problems.

Over the last decade, increasing evidence of cognitive functions of the cerebellum during development and learning processes could be ascertained. Posterior fossa malformations such as cerebellar hypoplasia or Joubert syndrome are known to be related to developmental problems in a marked to moderate extent. More detailed analyses reveal special deficits in attention, processing speed, visuospatial functions, and language. A study about Dandy Walker syndrome states a relationship of abnormalities in vermis lobulation with developmental problems. Further lobulation or volume abnormalities of the
