OBJECTIVE: It is unclear whether cognitive reactivity (CR), an indicator of depression vulnerability, is reduced after cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), as theorized. It is also unclear whether baseline CR and dysfunctional attitudes (DA) are associated with treatment outcome in CBT for depression. This study aims to examine these questions and assess if these effects are specific to CBT for depression.
METHOD: Depressed adult outpatients (n = 159) randomized to 16 sessions CBT or short-term psychodynamic supportive therapy (SPSP) completed measures of depression severity and CR at baseline…

BACKGROUND: Greater homework adherence in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is associated with positive treatment outcomes. However, the problems emerging from CBT homework use are common and affect adherence. In recent years, gamification has been explored to increase intervention adherence, but not yet in relation specifically to homework assignments.
OBJECTIVE: In this study, the aim was to gain a better understanding of obstacles to CBT homework and the use of gamification to overcome these.
METHODS: Concept mapping, a method to organize related information visually, was used in this st…

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been portrayed as a scientifically grounded and value-neutral form of psychotherapy. This paper argues that such normative neutrality is impossible. Drawing on arguments from philosophy of science, ethics, semantics, and professional regulations, the paper demonstrates that psychotherapy inevitably involves normative commitments. Hempel's analysis of scientific explanation, the Humean is-ought distinction, the Duhem-Quine thesis, unavoidable evaluative features of language, value-guided therapeutic change, and professional ethical codes all demonstrate th…

AIM: This study examines the integration of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with suggestive methods, reflecting the growing trend toward methodological convergence in psychotherapy. It focuses on the psychological mechanisms underlying suggestion and its adaptation to digital therapeutic contexts.
METHODS: A systemic-analytical approach, qualitative comparative analysis, and content analysis of contemporary literature were applied to evaluate the effectiveness of combining cognitive and suggestive techniques.
RESULTS: The study identifies key forms of suggestion within CBT, including dire

Cognitive behavioral therapies are widely used to treat a range of psychiatric and psychological problems, but the underlying assumptions and theories are firmly embedded in positivist and postpositivist ways of knowing, which privilege Eurocentric cultural perspectives. In this paper, we critically examine these underpinnings and offer multi-level recommendations for enhancing CBT's application to marginalized populations, with an emphasis on liberation and decolonial frameworks.

Sudden gains are associated with better acute and follow-up outcomes in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for mood and anxiety disorders. Using the group CBT for seasonal affective disorder (CBT-SAD) condition (n=88) from a parent randomized clinical trial, this study examines whether sudden gains can be detected in CBT-SAD and whether they relate to outcome at post-treatment and at follow-ups one and two winters later. Applying Kelly et al.'s (2005) criteria to week-to-week symptom changes [i.e., scores on the Structured Interview Guide for the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression-Seasonal A

BACKGROUND: Hoarding disorder (HD) is a new disorder in DSM-5. While cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is seen as the gold standard approach to treatment, the literature in this field is still emerging.
METHODS: The aim of the present study is to synthesize the current treatment outcome literature on CBT for HD, as well as secondary depressive symptoms, using a meta-analytic approach. Due to a lack of controlled trials only within-group effect sizes were calculated.
RESULTS: Sixteen studies were included in the meta-analysis (n = 505; mean age = 56 years; mean percentage female participants

This pilot study tested whether the addition of motivational interviewing (MI) prior to group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxiety may improve the effectiveness of the treatment. Prior to group CBT, 40 individuals with a principal diagnosis of an anxiety disorder (40% panic disorder, 25% generalized anxiety disorder, 22.5% social phobia, and 12.5% others) were randomly assigned to receive either three individual sessions of MI or were assigned to a control group that did not receive MI. The pretreatment MI group, compared to the control group, experienced significantly greater reduct…

BACKGROUND: Mental ill-health presents a major public health problem. A potential part solution that is receiving increasing attention is computer-delivered psychological therapy, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic as health care systems moved to remote service delivery. However, computerized cognitive behavioral therapy (cCBT) requires active engagement by service users, and low adherence may minimize treatment effectiveness. Therefore, it is important to investigate the acceptability of cCBT to understand implementation issues and maximize potential benefits.
OBJECTIVE: This study ai…

BACKGROUND: Clinical anxiety is common during the perinatal period, and anxiety symptoms often persist after childbirth. Ten to 30 % of perinatal women are diagnosed with panic disorder (PD)-far more than the 1.5-3% rate among the general population. Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been determined to be an effective treatment for PD, few studies have been conducted on CBT effectiveness in treating postpartum PD and, to the best of the knowledge of the present authors, no research has been conducted on postpartum PD among Japanese women. In this manuscript, we report on our admi…

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia during pregnancy.
METHODS: Randomized, unmasked, 3-site controlled trial. Participants were randomly allocated to cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (a first-line, empirically supported psychosocial intervention that addresses sleep-related behaviors and cognitions) or a control intervention consisting of imagery exercises that paired patient-identified distressing nighttime experiences with patient-identified neutral images. Participants were eligible if they met diagnostic criteria for insomnia diso…

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) constitutes an empirically based treatment for tic disorders (TD), but much remains to be learned about its impact at the neural level. Therefore, we examined the electrophysiological correlates of CBT in TD patients, and we evaluated the utility of event-related potentials (ERP) as predictors of CBT outcome. ERPs were recorded during a stimulus-response compatibility (SRC) task in 26 TD patients and 26 healthy controls. Recordings were performed twice, before and after CBT in TD patients, and with a similar time interval in healthy controls. The stimulus- an

Despite the ubiquity of sleep complaints among individuals with anxiety disorders, few prior studies have examined whether sleep quality improves during anxiety treatment. The current study examined pre- to posttreatment sleep quality improvement during cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for panic disorder (PD; n = 26) or generalized anxiety disorder (GAD; n = 24). Among sleep quality indices, only global sleep quality and sleep latency improved significantly (but modestly) during CBT. Sleep quality improvement was greater for treatment responders, but did not vary by diagnosis. Additionally, …

A number of evidence-based cognitive-behavioral treatments (CBT) have been developed to target specific anxiety and mood disorders. Many in the field of psychotherapy have focused their attention toward the identification and consolidation of core treatment principles and mechanisms of change that cut across different treatment approaches and diagnostic categories. This focus has led to the development of transdiagnostic CBT treatments that aim to integrate common principles of human functioning and change strategies found in existing evidence-based CBT interventions for various disorders. The current study investigates sudden gains (rapid symptom reduction) in group cognitive-behavioral therapy for panic disorder. Sudden gains occurring after session 2 of treatment predicted overall symptom reduction at treatment termination and some changes in cognitive biases. Meanwhile, sudden gains occurring immediately following session 1 were not associated with symptom reduction or cognitive change. Together, this research points to the importance of examining sudden gains across the entire span of treatment, as well as the potential role of sudden gains in recovery from panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patients diagnosed as having somatization disorder (SD) who present with a lifetime history of multiple, medically unexplained physical symptoms represent a significant challenge to health care providers. To date, no psychotherapeutic or pharmacologic intervention has been found to produce clinically meaningful improvement in symptoms or functioning of patients with SD. We examined the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for SD.
METHODS: Eighty-four participants meeting criteria for SD were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 conditions: (1) standard medical care augmented by a
