The Relationship Between Psychological and Physical Secondary Conditions and Family Caregiver Burden in Spinal Cord Injury: A Correlational Study.

Background: Caregiver burden (CB) is a consequence of providing care to people with spinal cord injury (SCI). However, there is a lack of clarity about the influence of secondary conditions of care recipients on family caregivers. Secondary conditions refer to the physical and psychological complications that can occur after SCI and lead to increased hospitalization and reduced functionality, quality of life, and social participation. Objective: To assess the impact of physical and psychological secondary conditions of people with SCI on the perceived burden of family caregivers. Methods: A mu

A social exchange perspective on supervisors' Dark Triad and subordinates' counterproductive work behaviors: psychological contract fulfillment as a boundary condition.

This study aims to examine the effects of supervisors' Dark Triad on subordinates' counterproductive work behaviors, differentiating between counterproductive work behaviors toward the organization and those toward individuals. Drawing from the social exchange perspective, psychological contract fulfillment is introduced as a boundary condition to mitigate these adverse effects. Data collected from China's banking sector largely supports the proposed theoretical framework and hypotheses. The findings revealed that all three dimensions of supervisors' Dark Triad-narcissism, psychopathy, and Mac

Attitudinal barriers to psychological support-seeking among carers of people with a chronic physical health condition: A qualitative meta-synthesis.

OBJECTIVES: Family/friend carers are the "invisible backbone" of our healthcare systems, providing essential support to people with chronic physical health conditions. Yet many face significant unmet needs, burdens and psychosocial concerns. Psychological interventions can help carers to manage these impacts, however, carers often demonstrate low engagement with psychological support services. This systematic review aimed to provide a meta-synthesis of qualitative studies to determine the attitudinal barriers to seeking formal psychological support services among carers of people with a chroni

Factors Associated With Caregiving Burden and Psychological Distress Among Family and Unpaid Caregivers With Cardiovascular Conditions Caring for Older Adults.

This study examined factors associated with caregiving burden and psychological distress among informal caregivers with cardiovascular conditions (CVC). A secondary analysis of the 2024-2025 National Health and Aging Trends Study and National Study of Caregiving included 792 community-dwelling older adults and their caregivers with CVC. In the regression on caregiver burden, higher burden was linked to female gender, younger age, leg strength and low energy limitations, sleep disruptions, greater negative emotion, and longer caregiving hours, while higher positive emotion was protective. For p

Understanding the Psychological Impact of Medical Care Experiences on Adults With Craniofacial Conditions: A Pilot Survey of Traumatic Stress Symptoms and Resilience.

Craniofacial conditions often require extensive medical care and surgeries throughout childhood and adolescence. However, there is limited research investigating the psychological effects of craniofacial care, including risks for medical traumatic stress. This cross-sectional study investigated the medical care experiences of adults with craniofacial conditions, including the frequency of potentially traumatic medical events, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and resilience. Participants (N=34; mean age 35.2 ± 12.2 y; 71% female) were recruited at 3 US pediatric hospitals and cra

A mixed methods systematic review of digital interventions to support the psychological health and well-being of people living with dermatological conditions.

BACKGROUND: Dermatological conditions can have a substantial impact on psychological as well as physical health yet dedicated face-to-face psychological support for patients is lacking. Thus, individuals may require additional support to self-manage dermatological conditions effectively. Digital technology can contribute to long-term condition management, but knowledge of the effectiveness of digital interventions addressing psychological (cognitive, emotional, and behavioural) aspects of dermatological conditions is limited. OBJECTIVES: To identify, determine the effectiveness, and explore p

Psychological distress, rumination and problematic smartphone use among Spanish adolescents: An emotional intelligence-based conditional process analysis.

BACKGROUND: Problematic smartphone use (PSU) is a public health issue that is currently rising among adolescents. The Compensatory Internet Use Theory (CIUT) poses that difficulties in handling negative life circumstances could result in PSU. Furthermore, the Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution (I-PACE) model suggests that the interaction between core characteristics and affective and cognitive responses could lead to PSU. The present study aimed to clarify the links between psychological distress and PSU by exploring rumination as a mediator and emotional intelligence (EI) as a m

Poor sleep quality and loneliness among higher vocational college students: a conditional process analysis of psychological resilience and self-esteem.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness, sleep quality, psychological resilience, and self-esteem are closely related to young adults' everyday psychological adjustment. However, less is known about how sleep quality is associated with loneliness among higher vocational college students and whether this association depends on internal psychological resources. This study examined the association between sleep quality and loneliness and tested the mediating role of psychological resilience and the moderating role of self-esteem. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from May to December 2023 in three

Tree of Life Groups for Children and Young People With Long-Term Medical Conditions and Their Parents Led by Pre-Qualification Psychology Staff.

The Tree of Life group (Ncube, 2006) was designed to help children, young people (CYP), and adults who have experienced hard times or trauma to build resilience, restore hope, and connect with their strengths and social histories. A small number of publications have demonstrated a positive impact with CYP with long-term medical conditions (LTCs) (e.g., Casdagli et al., 2017) who are more likely to experience psychosocial challenges. In the context of increasing workforce pressures, the current study aimed to test if the positive results from previous studies could be replicated (1) with CYP's

Who Benefits Most from Positive Psychological Interventions? Predictors and Moderators of Well-Being Outcomes in Severe Mental Health Conditions.

Background/Objectives: Positive psychology interventions (PPIs) may enhance well-being in individuals with severe psychiatric conditions (SPCs), yet little is known about individual differences in treatment response. Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of a single-blind, parallel-group randomized controlled trial. A total of 119 adults receiving outpatient mental health care were randomized to an 11-week multicomponent PPI plus treatment as usual (PPI + TAU) or TAU alone. A priori demographic and baseline clinical variables (e.g., age, gender, education, diagnosis, symptom severity) wer

Psychological and psychosocial implications of differences of sex development and differentiation in families of children with this condition, with relevance to surgical care: A cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Disorders of sex development (DSD) include congenital disorders with incongruence among phenotype, genotype, and gonadal sex. The psychological aspects and response of the parents of a child with DSD towards this issue are crucial, as they are considered the fundamental care providers for their child. Hence, their perceptions affect the overall clinical and social care. We hypothesise that parents having children with DSD face marked challenges, not only social, but also psychological, such as anxiety and depression. Also, their quality of life may be negatively affected. This st
