Incidence of Food allergy among patients with allergic conjunctivitis.

The prevalence of ocular allergy is increasing worldwide. Skin prick test is widely recognized as the most reliable method for diagnosing the incriminating allergen as regards type I hypersensitivity reactions. Food allergy results as immunological response to food protein which leads to occurrence of allergic conjunctivitis (AC), allergic rhinitis, asthma, atopic dermatitis, and eosinophilic esophagitis. There is a scarcity of research investigating the association between food allergy and AC. This retrospective cohort study aimed to determine the incidence of food allergy within AC patients

Allergic conjunctivitis in children: current understanding and future perspectives.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The rising global burden of allergic diseases, particularly in the pediatric population, is of serious concern. Ocular allergy is one of the most common ocular pathologies met in clinical practice. A large proportion of children and adolescents suffer from allergic eye diseases (AEDs), which affect their quality of life. The available treatments and surgical modalities have their limitations and side effects. Therefore, the development of novel and alternate strategies is the need of the hour and requires a timely review of currently available knowledge. RECENT FINDINGS: Th

Astigmatism Associated with Allergic Conjunctivitis in Urban School Children.

INTRODUCTION: We first examined the association of an ocular refractive error with allergic conjunctivitis in school children and then examined this association in children attending a suburban school and an urban school. METHODS: We enrolled 426 children attending a primary school in a suburban area and 550 children attending a primary school in an urban area which had a higher level of air pollution. Allergic conjunctivitis was defined as the diagnosis of this condition at any time during a child's life. The ophthalmic examinations included measurements of visual acuity and refraction, and

Emerging therapies in allergic conjunctivitis and dry eye syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory disorders of the anterior surface of the eye consist of a spectrum of disorders that range from ocular allergy, dry eye syndrome (DES), and various infections. They exhibit similar pathological profiles, but have divergent immune mechanisms with some overlap. A number of novel treatments are currently being studied that capitalize on the growing understanding of underlying immunopathophysiology. AREAS COVERED: The goal of this review is to examine the emerging pipeline for noninfectious inflammatory disorders of the anterior surface of the eye - primarily allergic c

Treatment of allergic conjunctivitis with olopatadine hydrochloride eye drops.

Olopatadine hydrochloride exerts a wide range of pharmacological actions such as histamine H(1) receptor antagonist action, chemical mediator suppressive action, and eosinophil infiltration suppressive action. Olopatadine hydrochloride 0.1% ophthalmic solution (Patanol((R))) was introduced to the market in Japan in October 2006. In a conjunctival allergen challenge (CAC) test, olopatadine hydrochloride 0.1% ophthalmic solution significantly suppressed ocular itching and hyperemia compared with levocabastine hydrochloride 0.05% ophthalmic solution, and the number of patients who complained of o

Severe allergic conjunctivitis and chemosis caused by disodium cromoglycate.

A 63-year-old man with chronic, nonallergic rhinoconjunctivitis presented immediate adverse reactions, such as intense itching, burning, redness and severe swelling of both conjunctivae after using disodium cromoglycate eye drops. Skin prick tests and conjunctival provocation tests were positive with pure disodium cromoglycate. Circulating IgE-specific antibodies to disodium cromoglycate in serum were demonstrated by RAST. We suggest that the acute ocular reaction was caused by disodium cromoglycate and that the underlying mechanism was probably an IgE-mediated immunological reaction.

Experimental allergic conjunctivitis in inbred guinea pig strains with high respectively low bronchial allergic reactivity.

Inbred guinea pigs selected for high (IMM/S) respectively low (IMM/R) responsiveness to ovalbumin (OA) as measured by induced respiratory anaphylaxis, were investigated for atopic immune responses of their conjunctival mucosa. IMM/S animals sensitized either by inhalation of OA, or by instillation of antigen into the conjunctival sac, developed regularly an acute ocular inflammatory response to topical (conjunctival) challenge with the allergen. A minimum of 1 microgram OA dropped repeatedly into the conjunctival sac was enough for both ocular and systemic sensitization of the animals, but the

The Effect of Allergic Conjunctivitis on Refractive Error in the Pediatric Population.

Introduction Refractive error is one of the most common causes of visual impairment in the world, negatively affecting a patient's quality of life, economic opportunities and more. Although numerous studies have explored the impact of severe ocular allergies on refractive error, there is limited research on how relatively mild forms of ocular allergies may affect vision. This study aims to assess the impact of allergic conjunctivitis, a milder and more common ocular allergy, on the development and progression of refractive error in the pediatric population. Methods This was a retrospective stu

Brazilian guidelines for the monitoring and treatment of pediatric allergic conjunctivitis.

Allergic conjunctivitis is an increasingly frequent condition with a higher prevalence in children. It can be debilitating and is responsible for a great economic burden. These guidelines were developed on the basis of the medical literature (PubMed/Medline database) and the experience of an Expert Committee composed of members of the Brazilian Society of Pediatric Ophthalmology, the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology, the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics, and the Brazilian Association of Allergy and Immunology. Allergic conjunctivitis is considered to be controlled when the ocular symptoms are

[Interest of environmental exposure chambers in the evaluation of allergic conjunctivitis].

Allergic conjunctivitis affects 15 to 20% of the general population. It is currently evaluated by the Conjunctival Provocation Test (CPT), which is considered as the gold standard. In the investigation of allergic rhinitis and asthma, environmental exposure chambers (EEC) are increasingly utilised. For allergic conjunctivitis, EEC might be a valid alternative to the CPT. However, evaluation of the allergen response in individual provocation tests or in EECs is still in discussion due to the multiplicity of symptom scores. Indeed, there are many scores used to evaluate allergic conjunctivitis.

Variation in the TEK gene is not associated with asthma but with allergic conjunctivitis.

The Tie2 receptor is an important player in angiogenesis. The Tie2 mRNA and protein are abundantly expressed in the lungs and the associated pathway also has an important role in the development and function of the eye. Tie2 is encoded by the TEK gene in humans. Recently, variations in the TEK gene have been found associated with asthma. The objective of the present study was to investigate whether variations in the TEK gene influenced the susceptibility to pediatric asthma and/or associated phenotypes like GINA status, viral- or exercise-induced asthma, allergic asthma, indoor, outdoor, inhal
