Single-Dose Levonorgestrel Emergency Contraception and Silent Barriers to Its Access: Is It Really Just One Step?

BACKGROUND: Single-dose levonorgestrel has been legally available over the counter in the United States without age restriction since 2013. The objective of this study was to discover if there are barriers to access and to determine if such barriers vary based on the gender of the person making the purchase. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A male and female caller contacted 146 Richmond, Virginia pharmacies listed on the Plan B One Step® website. Ultimately, these callers interviewed 90 pharmacies via phone and used a rehearsed standardized script to ask eight questions regarding emergency contracepti

The Use and Effectiveness of Different Emergency Contraception Methods Among Adolescent Girls and Young Women in a Greek Clinic: A Cross-Sectional, Comparative, Observational Study.

Background: Emergency contraception (EC), also known as postcoital contraception, is a method used to prevent an unintended pregnancy following unprotected or inadequately protected sexual intercourse. The available options include emergency contraceptive pills or the insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD). Emergency contraception pills contain either levonorgestrel (a single 1.5 mg dose, effective within 72 h) or ulipristal acetate (a single 30 mg dose, effective within 120 h), both of which are most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse. Another highly eff

Contraception for the adolescent.

The primary care physician is in an excellent position to counsel adolescents about contraception. However, an adequate understanding of the biologic and psychosocial development of this particular age-group is imperative. In addition, communication skills are necessary to advise adolescents on use of contraceptives. The goal in counseling the adolescent about sexuality is to instill a sense of sexual responsibility and to provide individualized instruction in selecting the appropriate birth control method. General factors to remember in selecting the proper method include motivation, moral-et

Call to action: The pharmacist's role in improving contraceptive knowledge and access.

Pharmacists have the knowledge and training to participate in contraceptive education and management and should feel empowered to do so. Advocating for legislation to expand the pharmacist's role in this setting can improve patient access to hormonal contraceptives. As the nation digests the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade, many health care providers have stopped to think about what our role will be in this uncertain future. Approximately, 20 states/jurisdictions have legislation in place that allows pharmacists to prescribe or dispense oral contraceptives without a prescript

Hormonal methods for emergency contraception.

The World Health Organization includes oral emergency contraception (EC) in the list of essential medicines. Ulipristal acetate (UPA) and levonorgestrel (LNG) are the recommended oral methods. UPA has superior efficacy and a comparable side effect profile compared with LNG. Both work by inhibiting or delaying ovulation, so that sperm present in the reproductive tract will have lost their fertilising ability by the time the oocyte is eventually released. Neither LNG nor UPA at the EC doses have significant effects on the endometrium and are unable to prevent implantation. Mifepristone can also

[Introducing Emergency Contraception in the Mexican Family Planning Official Norm].

OBJECTIVES: Understand the process of including Emergency Contraception (EC) in the Mexican Family Planning Norm (NOM) and identify factors that influenced this achievement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted in-depth interviews with eight prominent decision-makers of state and federal government institutions. RESULTS: The determining factor for the inclusion of EC in the Norm was the external review of scientific evidence, done by experts from the National Centre for Equity of Gender and Reproductive Health, proving that EC pills are not abortifacients. Other important factors that contrib
