Effects of seedling-stage LED supplementary lighting on the eating quality and textural properties of oriental melon (Cucumis melo L. var. makuwa Makino) fruits at maturity.

INTRODUCTION: Low-light stress during winter compromises the sensory quality of off-season oriental melons (Cucumis melo L. var. makuwa Makino) in cultivation. Although LED supplemental lighting is commonly used to alleviate low-light stress in horticulture, its long-term programming effects on fruit quality remain largely unknown. METHODS: This study investigated whether early light signals from different LED spectra (red:blue ratios of 1:1 and 5:1) and intensities (full‑spectrum white at 18, 48, and 60 W) could persistently shape the texture and eating quality of mature fruits in two cultiv…

Simultaneously quantitative analysis of peptides and chemical components in Cervus and Cucumis polypeptide injection (Songmeile®) using reversed phase liquid chromatography-hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

Co-occurrences of peptides and chemical components are usually observed in complicated matrices. Notably, those traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions (TCMPs) contain both plant and animal ingredients. It is still challenging to simultaneously monitor peptides and chemical components attributing to their different liquid chromatographic (LC) and mass spectrometric (MS) behaviors. Herein, efforts were made to pursue an eligible approach enabling simultaneous determination of peptides and chemical components in a TCMP namely Cervus and Cucumis polypeptide injection (CCPI, Songmeile®) that is…

Ectopic expression of CsCTR1, a cucumber CTR-like gene, attenuates constitutive ethylene signaling in an Arabidopsis ctr1-1 mutant and expression pattern analysis of CsCTR1 in cucumber (Cucumis sativus).

The gaseous plant hormone ethylene regulates many aspects of plant growth, development and responses to the environment. Constitutive triple response 1 (CTR1) is a central regulator involved in the ethylene signal transduction pathway. To obtain a better understanding of this particular pathway in cucumber, the cDNA-encoding CTR1 (designated CsCTR1) was isolated from cucumber. A sequence alignment and phylogenetic analyses revealed that CsCTR1 has a high degree of homology with other plant CTR1 proteins. The ectopic expression of CsCTR1 in the Arabidopsis ctr1-1 mutant attenuates constitutive

Characterization of CsSEF1 gene encoding putative CCCH-type zinc finger protein expressed during cucumber somatic embryogenesis.

Somatic embryos obtained in vitro are a form of vegetative reproduction that can be used in artificial seed technology, as well as a model to study the principles of plant development. In order to isolate the genes involved in somatic embryogenesis of the cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), we utilized the suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH). One of the obtained sequences was the CsSEF1 clone (Cucumis sativus Somatic Embryogenesis Zinc Finger 1), with a level of expression that sharply increased with the induction of embryogenesis. The full length cDNA of CsSEF1 encodes the putative 307 ami…

The Ethylene Biosynthesis Gene CpACO1A: A New Player in the Regulation of Sex Determination and Female Flower Development in Cucurbita pepo.

A methanesulfonate-generated mutant has been identified in Cucurbita pepo that alters sex determination. The mutation converts female into hermaphrodite flowers and disrupts the growth rate and maturation of petals and carpels, delaying female flower opening, and promoting the growth rate of ovaries and the parthenocarpic development of the fruit. Whole-genome resequencing allowed identification of the causal mutation of the phenotypes as a missense mutation in the coding region of CpACO1A, which encodes for a type I ACO enzyme that shares a high identity with Cucumis sativus CsACO3 and Cucumi…

Biology of Anastrepha grandis (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Different Cucurbits.

Anastrepha grandis (Macquart) (Diptera: Tephritidae) is one of the main pests of cucurbits in Brazil. Losses occur due to the damage caused to the fruits and the embargo on exports, as A. grandis is considered a quarantine pest in countries that import Brazilian cucurbits. This study aimed to evaluate the development of A. grandis in hosts of the Cucurbitaceae family. The hosts used were stem squash (Cucurbita pepo L.), squash (Cucurbita moschata Duchesne), chayote [Sechium edule (Jacq.) Swartz], mini watermelon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum & Nakai], Spanish melon (Cucumis melo L.), hybr…

Codon Usage Bias Analysis of Chloroplast Genomes in Six Cucurbitaceae Species.

Background and Objectives: Codon usage bias (CUB), the non-uniform usage of synonymous codons, is prevalent in plant chloroplast genomes and plays important roles in gene expression and genome evolution. However, systematic comparisons of CUB patterns across genera in the Cucurbitaceae family remain limited. This study aimed to characterize CUB patterns and identify their driving forces in the chloroplast genomes of six Cucurbitaceae species. Methods: We analyzed the complete chloroplast genomes of six Cucurbitaceae species, watermelon (Citrullus lanatus), melon (Cucumis melo), cucumber (Cucum…

Ancient DNA reveals early use of melons in China's Song dynasty.

Melon (Cucumis melo L.) domestication is thought to have occurred independently once in Northeast Africa and twice in India, but archaeobotanical seed remains point to a possible additional domestication event in China. Because Cucumis seeds are difficult to diagnose morphologically, genomic data from archaeological material are needed to evaluate these scenarios and reconstruct ancient melon traits. We sequenced two Song Dynasty (960-1279 CE) melon seeds from Shuomen Gugang (China), recovering 5.5× and 2.1× nuclear genome coverage. Nuclear and chloroplast analyses place both seeds within cult…

LMS-Res-YOLO: Lightweight and Multi-Scale Cucumber Detection Model with Residual Blocks.

Efficient cucumber detection in greenhouse environments is crucial for agricultural automation, yet challenges like background interference, target occlusion, and resource constraints of edge devices hinder existing solutions. This paper proposes LMS-Res-YOLO, a lightweight multi-scale cucumber detection model with three key innovations: (1) A plug-and-play HEU module (High-Efficiency Unit with residual blocks) that enhances multi-scale feature representation while reducing computational redundancy. (2) A DE-HEAD (Decoupled and Efficient detection HEAD) that reduces the number of model paramet

Energy-economic-environmental cycle evaluation comparing two polyethylene and polycarbonate plastic greenhouses in cucumber production (from production to packaging and distribution).

Excessive consumption and improper management of inputs would lead to environmental damages, as well as decreased economic benefits. Thus, a thorough examination of the entire production process from the viewpoint of energy flow, economic profit, and environmental effects can identify hotspots and facilitate input management. Accordingly, in the current investigation, energy, economic and environmental aspects of greenhouse cucumber production systems were measured by life cycle assessment (LCA) technique and cumulative exergy demand (CExD) analysis by considering different greenhouse structur

Characterization of a Class II α-mannosidase from Trichosanthes anguina seeds: Partial amino acid sequencing, secondary structure determination, and thermal/chemical unfolding.

Purification and partial biochemical characterization of snake gourd α-mannosidase (SGM) present in the seeds of Trichosanthes anguina was reported by us earlier. In the present study, we report partial amino acid sequence of this enzyme, determined by proteolytic digestion and mass spectrometric analysis, which revealed high sequence similarities to the Cucumis sativus α-mannosidase. Furthermore, finer comparisons with the sequences of α-mannosidases from the legume jack bean, and cucurbit Cucumis sativus clearly demonstrated unique structural features that are conserved among legume and non-…
