Bioaccumulation and uptake kinetics of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in Pimephales promelas.

Due to the ubiquitous contamination of water resources by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), there has been growing interest in understanding the disposition of PFAS in the environment. However, bioaccumulation dynamics remain poorly understood for many substances within this group of chemicals, and kinetic-based information is limited, particularly for fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas), a common ecotoxicology model that is not commonly utilized during bioaccumulation studies. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine uptake of 19 PFAS by adult fathead minnows over 7 days at

A congeneric and non-randomly associated pair of larval trematodes dominates the assemblage of co-infecting parasites in fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas).

Individual hosts are often co-infected with multiple parasite species. Evidence from theoretical and empirical studies supports the idea that co-occurring parasites can impact each other and their hosts via synergistic or antagonistic interactions. The fundamental aim of understanding the consequences of co-infection to hosts and parasites requires an understanding of patterns of species co-occurrence within samples of hosts. We censused parasite assemblages in 755 adult, male fathead minnows collected from 7 lakes/ponds in southern Alberta, Canada between 2018 and 2020. Fifteen species of end

Evolutionary mechanisms and practical significance of reproductive success and clonal diversity in unisexual vertebrate polyploids.

Unisexual reproduction is generally relevant to polyploidy, and unisexual vertebrates are often considered an evolutionary "dead end" due to the accumulation of deleterious mutations and absence of genetic diversity. However, some unisexual polyploids have developed strategies to avoid genomic decay, and thus provide ideal models to unveil unexplored evolutionary mechanisms, from the reproductive success to clonal diversity creation. This article reviews the evolutionary mechanisms for overcoming meiotic barrier and generating genetic diversity in unisexual vertebrates, and summarizes recent r

Effects of subchronic exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of a commercial fluridone formulation on fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas).

Invasive aquatic plants are a widespread problem in United States' waterways, and aquatic herbicide treatments are a common tool used in their management. Fluridone is an active ingredient in aquatic herbicides used globally to control aquatic plants. In order to be effective, fluridone requires a long contact time with plants resulting in extended exposure to non-target organisms. While there has been limited studies exploring the effects of fluridone on non-target aquatic organisms, the effects of subchronic commercial fluridone exposure at concentrations representative of operational use ra

Opisthorchis viverrini metacercarial infection in cyprinid fish in Nakhon Phanom Province, Northeastern Thailand.

Opisthorchiasis is endemic in parts of Southeast Asia, including the northern and northeastern regions of Thailand. In these regions, the transmission by fish intermediate hosts has received little attention. We investigated the intensity of Opisthorchis viverrini metacercariae (OV MC) in wild cyprinid fishes from five districts within the Nakhon Phanom Province, Northeast Thailand. Fishes were procured from local markets in five districts throughout three different seasons (hot, rainy and cold) between February 2018 and January 2019. The samples were identified, counted and weighed before met

Barbel cholera, a rare but still possible food-borne poisoning. Case report and narrative review.

The gastro enteric toxic effects of the barbel eggs have been described up to two centuries ago, but deliberate or serendipitous ingestion of this fish product still occur, often eliciting a gastrointestinal syndrome usually known as barbel cholera. Barbel cholera is a self-limited gastrointestinal diarrheic syndrome that develops 2 to 4 hours after ingestion of the eggs, lasting up to 12-36 hours, nearly always complicated by vomiting and severe abdominal pain. The disease is usually self-limited, and the prognosis is thus benign even without hospitalization and medical treatment. Rarely, how

Impact of Environmental Radiation on the Health and Reproductive Status of Fish from Chernobyl.

Aquatic organisms at Chernobyl have now been chronically exposed to environmental radiation for three decades. The biological effects of acute exposure to radiation are relatively well documented, but much less is known about the long-term effects of chronic exposure of organisms in their natural environment. Highly exposed fish in freshwater systems at Chernobyl showed morphological changes in their reproductive system in the years after the accident. However, the relatively limited scope of past studies did not allow robust conclusions to be drawn. Moreover, the level of the radiation dose a

Genomic and chromosomal architectures underlying fertility maintenance in the testes of intergeneric homoploid hybrids.

The remarkable diversity of the Cyprinidae family highlights the importance of hybridization and gene flow in generating genetic variation, adaptation, and even speciation. However, why do cyprinid fish frequently overcome postzygotic reproductive isolation, a mechanism that normally prevents successful reproduction after fertilization? To address this gap in knowledge, we conducted comparative studies using reciprocal F1 hybrid lineages derived from intergeneric hybridization between the cyprinid species Megalobrama amblycephala and Culter alburnus. Utilizing long-read genome sequencing, ATAC…

Environmental deterioration and toxic cyanobacterial blooms (Microcystis and Anabaena) induce severe pathophysiology in Labeo rohita.

Cyanobacteria are widely distributed in water worldwide, and their harmful effects on water quality have become a global issue. It has long been recognized that cyanobacterial blooms in aquaculture ponds can cause sudden, large-scale fish mortalities. However, their impact on cellular and molecular responses in fish remains poorly understood. In this study, the impact of cyanobacterial blooms, which have been associated with mass mortality events in the freshwater fish Labeo rohita, was investigated by examining their detrimental effects on the host's cellular and molecular responses. The fish

Exposure To Neodymium Blunts the Hypoxic Ventilatory Response in Fathead Minnows (Pimephales promelas).

In hypoxia, the initial response in vertebrates is hyperventilation, known as the Hypoxic Ventilatory Response (HVR), which is a physiological reflex that allows fish to maintain adequate oxygen uptake to meet metabolic demands. The severity of hypoxia in aquatic ecosystems is growing due to anthropogenic impacts. This is a concern with the recent evidence that metals can affect the ability of fishes to mount the HVR. As Rare Earth Elements (REEs), such as neodymium (Nd) increase in demand with the shift to a low-carbon, green economy, there is a critical need to understand their environmental

Maternal ploidy shapes reproductive pathways in the triploid hybrid Chrosomus eos × eos-neogaeus.

Elements transferred from a mother to her eggs may strongly influence the phenotype of her offspring. Such maternal effects depend on the genotype of the mother, and while multiple ploidy levels occur naturally in some vertebrate species, studies evaluating the impact of maternal ploidy on offspring are scarce. This paper aimed to test whether maternal ploidy is responsible for the two reproductive phenotypes observed in the triploid fish Chrosomus eos × eos-neogaeus. Indeed, these hybrids have two different maternal origins (diploid or triploid) and display two reproductive phenotypes, ameiot
