OBJECTIVE: To describe the natural history and quality of life (QoL) in patients with cystine urolithiasis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cohort study was carried out involving participants recruited from a single surgeon's case mix. Patients with cystinuria and related urolithiasis were invited to complete a questionnaire involving demographic information, use of medical treatment, surgical interventions and the 36-item short-form 36-item short-form health survey (SF-36).

This study aims to examine the effects of cystine and theanine (CT), which increases glutathione biosynthesis, on the survival rate and acute radiation injury of the small intestine and bone marrow using a rat model. Previously we found that three components of a commonly used mammalian cell culture medium incorporated into agar killed cryptococci (Granger and Call 2019). Urinary retention resulting from urolithiasis in early infancy is an extremely rare event. Cystine stone formation in those younger than 1 year is also a rare condition. We report a case of urinary retention caused by a urethral cystine stone in a 10-month-old male infant. Obstructive urolithiasis should be considered one of the reasons of decreased urine output in infants.

Cystin is a novel cilia-associated protein that is disrupted in the cpk mouse, a well-characterized mouse model of autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD). Cystine aminopeptidase (CAP) activity in tissues and in plasma from pregnant cows was measured at various stages of gestation by using the substrate S-benzyl-L-cysteine-4-nitroanilide. The CAP activity was as high or higher in hepatic and renal tissues as in cotyledonary tissue. Plasma CAP activity was low and did not change with length of gestation, nor did it change when placentation was disrupted by infection with Aspergillus fumigatus.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Oxidative stress has been considered a nontraditional risk factor for cardiovascular disease in the chronic kidney disease (CKD) population, possibly triggered by uremic toxicity.
