INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: An increasing number of female patients have received comorbid diagnoses of cystitis glandularis (CG) and interstitial cystitis (IC) at our institution. Clinical observations were performed on 5 cases of eosinophilic cystitis that had been diagnosed by our criteria. In all 5 cases some kind of allergic diseases was found. General urinalysis did not show any definite tendency, but eosinophils in urine were found in 4 cases. Pelvic lipomatosis is a rare disease which may cause obstructive uropathy. It has been reported with cystitis cystica and cystitis glandularis. Cystitis cystica and cystitis glandularis have been reported previously as progressing to adenocarcinoma of the bladder. The first reported case of pelvic lipomatosis, cystitis cystica, cystitis glandularis and adenocarcinoma of the bladder is presented and the literature reviewed.

Emphysematous cystitis (EC) is a potentially life-threatening urinary tract infection (UTI) characterized by the presence of gas within the bladder wall and lumen. The extension of gas beyond the bladder wall is rare and indicative of severe disease. We present a case of septic shock secondary to EC with the extension of air through the paraspinal and psoas muscles and into the epidural space of the lumbar spinal canal. This finding of intraspinal air is a rare radiographic phenomenon known as pneumorrhachis (PR).

Emphysematous cystitis and emphysematous pyelonephritis are rare entities, difficult to diagnose and with high morbidity and mortality. Radiation cystitis (RC) is a common side-effect of radiation to the pelvis. Their clinical appearance as well as their degree of expression is manifold, as are the therapeutic options. However, in the absence of randomized examinations, recommendations are difficult. We differentiate between oral, systemic therapies, intravesical instillations and interventions as well as interventional, radiological and, as an ultima ratio, surgical treatments. This article provides an overview of the different treatment options with particular emphasis on the conservative-interventional therapy options.

An 86-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes was admitted with increasing lethargy and hyperglycaemia. On examination she was noted to have a tender and tympanic bladder.
