OBJECTIVE: Autologous HIV-1-infected CD4 primary T cells (aHIVCD4) have been shown to be largely resistant to natural killer (NK)-cell-mediated lysis because of viral strategies of immune evasion. We have previously shown that a preactivation of NK cells with plasmacytoid dendritic cells can significantly augment lysis of aHIVCD4 through a mechanism dependent on interferon-alpha (IFN-α).

Multiple immunologic parameters were studied in three patients prior to and after hyperthermia treatment for disseminated malignancy. Two patients had malignant melanoma and received chemotherapy during the hyperthermia treatment. One had adenocarcinoma of the stomach and received no concomitant chemotherapy. Since antigen-persistence plays a role for induction of immunity, we investigated the in vivo pharmacokinetic of a naked DNA vaccine at the site of its action, i.e., in the lymph node. After direct intralymphatic injection, naked DNA vaccine degraded within a few hours. In genetically susceptible strains of mice, the DA strain of Theiler's virus, a picornavirus, causes a persistent infection of the white matter of the spinal cord associated with chronic demyelination. One hundred and thirty nine observations of antibody-dependent cell mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) were made on 77 with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and 17 healthy controls. There were no differences in ADCC between these 2 groups or within the RA group with regard to disease activity, duration, seropositivity, or drug treatment. Sixty observations of phytohaemagglutinin induced cytotoxicity were made on 22 patients with RA and 10 healthy controls. Again there were no differences in cytotoxicity between the 2 groups.
