[Infusion treatment in severe dehydration (infantile toxicosis)].

Severe dehydration in infants is a common life threatening condition. The therapy of different forms of dehydration has been described. Many practical suggestions for diagnostic procedures have been added. Clinical and pathophysiological peculiarities typical of the treatment of severe infantile dehydration have been stressed.

The postnatal emergence of dehydration anorexia in rats is temporally associated with the emergence of dehydration-induced inhibition of gastric emptying.

Osmotic dehydration produced by systemic hypertonic NaCl (HS) inhibits gastric motility and emptying and also inhibits feeding in adult rats. Conversely, in neonatal rats, dehydration does not inhibit feeding. The present study examined whether the postnatal emergence of dehydration anorexia is temporally associated with the emergence of dehydration-induced inhibition of gastric emptying. Rat pups 4 to 19 days old were injected subcutaneously with HS (0.75 M NaCl; 200 microL/10 g body weight). Control rats were injected with isotonic saline (0.15 M NaCl). Thirty minutes later, rats were given …

Electrochemical Dehydration of Sulfonic Acids to Their Anhydrides.

We developed an electrochemical method for sulfonic anhydride synthesis and one-pot derivatization into sulfonamides and mesylates under mild conditions. Aliphatic sulfonic anhydrides were electrogenerated in up to a 74% yield. Since isolating these moisture-sensitive intermediates is challenging, the in situ-generated sulfonic anhydrides were directly converted into sulfonamides or alkyl sulfonates using amines or alcohols, respectively. This scalable process enables the synthesis of various nitrogen- and oxygen-based products in the multigram range.

Vomiting and Dehydration in a 2-Year-Old.

A 2-year-old girl with a past medical history of cutaneous mastocytosis and eczema presented with 1 day of yellow-green, nonbloody vomiting, bradycardia, and listlessness. She was evaluated by her pediatrician and sent to the emergency department because of concern for dehydration. In the emergency department, she improved with fluid rehydration but still had decreased energy and bradycardia. Her electrocardiogram revealed sinus bradycardia, and laboratory results did not reveal any electrolyte abnormalities. Glucose levels were normal. An abdominal radiograph revealed a moderate-to-large stoo…

Hypernatremic Dehydration in Young Children: Is There a Solution?

BACKGROUND: Hypernatremic dehydration is a common and potentially life-threatening condition in children. There is currently no consensus as to the optimal strategy for fluid management. OBJECTIVES: To describe the relationship between the type, route and rate of fluids administered and the rate of decline in serum sodium (Na+) concentration. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of all children under the age of 2 years who were hospitalized with hypernatremic dehydration (serum Na+ ≥ 155 mEq/L) in Shaare Zedek Medical Center during the period 2001-2010. Collected data of 62 subjects incl…

Vasopressin at Central Levels and Consequences of Dehydration.

Disorders of water balance are a common feature of clinical practice. An understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of central vasopressin release and perception of thirst is the key to diagnosis and management of these disorders. Mammals are osmoregulators; they have evolved mechanisms that maintain extracellular fluid osmolality near a stable value, and, in animal studies, osmoregulatory neurons express a truncated delta-N variant of the transient receptor potential vannilloid (TRPV1) channel involved in hypertonicity and thermal perception while systemic hypotonicity might be perce

A fatal case of hypernatraemic dehydration in a neonate.

Problems with lactation can result in hypernatraemic dehydration in the neonate, with potentially severe adverse consequences. This is illustrated in this fatal case of a 10 day old neonate who presented with excessive hypernatraemic dehydration due to insufficient breast milk intake, resulting in cerebral sinus vein thrombosis with cerebral haemorrhage and infarction. Differential diagnosis included excessive sodium intake (through inappropriately mixed formula or house remedies or through hyperaldosteronism) and high water deficit (renal or gastrointestinal losses, nephrogenic or central dia…

The assessment of dehydration in congenital pyloric stenosis.

In a retrospective review of the records of 88 infants who underwent a Ramstedt pyloromyotomy for pyloric stenosis, biochemical and clinical measures were used to determine the most useful guide to the degree of dehydration on admission. The only measure which correlated to the dehydration was the clinical assessment (r = 0.62). Apart from indicating the presence of alkalosis and hypochloraemia, serum chloride and serum bicarbonate levels were not useful measures. While clinical measures show only a degree of linear correlation with dehydration, they do present the most useful baseline to judg…

Acid-base parameters in the dehydrated camel.

The effect of prolonged (10 days) dehydration on acid-base parameters of camel blood was examined. The pH and PCO2 levels rose significantly in the course of dehydration. This state was comparable with compensated non-respiratory alkalosis found in other animals. The plasma sodium, and magnesium levels rose significantly also. The plasma oxygen and calcium levels declined significantly. There were no significant changes in potassium and phosphate levels. It is concluded that the changes found in acid-base status following dehydration are further evidence of water preservation mechanisms in the…
