Effect of clindamycin hydrochloride on oral malodor, plaque, calculus, and gingivitis in dogs with periodontitis.

Periodontal disease is considered the most common disease of dogs and cats. The clinical sign most frequently reported by clients is oral malodor. Clindamycin hydrochloride has been used for several years for the treatment of periodontal disease in both cats and dogs. This study was designed to assess the effect of clindamycin HCl when used in two different post-prophylaxis treatment regimens on oral malodor and periodontal disease in a controlled clinical trial. This study demonstrated that a 5-day postprophylaxis regimen was significantly effective in reducing oral malodor compared with a de

Triggers and short-term prophylaxis in patients with hereditary angioedema.

Background: Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare disease that affects 1 in 60,000; however, despite being extremely rare, the severity of the disease can cause significant limitations to quality of life. In addition, attacks can be fatal and require urgent care. Methods: We searched PubMed and Google for Hereditary Angioedema and prophylaxis, short term prophylaxis, surgery, medical procedures, dental work, triggers. Results: The main triggers are estrogens, Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors (ACI) inhibitors, trauma, dental work, stress, surgery, manipulation of the upper airway, and m

Effectiveness of a Daily Honeycomb-Shaped Dental Chew in Reducing Calculus, Plaque, Gingivitis and Malodor in Dogs.

Periodontal disease in dogs is common. Client compliance with oral hygiene and oral care for pets is low. The gold standard is annual dental prophylaxis under general anesthesia with imaging followed by home care including daily brushing. Clients should be offered methods to reduce calculus, plaque, gingivitis, and resulting halitosis that are time efficient, cost-effective, and easy to administer between annual preventative dental prophylaxis with the goal to move into maintenance phase of managing periodontal disease. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a honeycomb-shaped dental che

Successful perioperative management of three patients with hereditary angioedema without C1 esterase inhibitor therapy: A developing country perspective.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare inherited disorder characterized by sudden and unpredictable appearance of swelling. Surgical procedures, even minor ones, are known to precipitate an attack in these patients. C1 esterase inhibitor (C1-INH) therapy may be effective for short term prophylaxis in such situations. However, there is limited experience with short term prophylaxis in countries where C1-INH therapy is not available. METHODS: To report our experience of using short term prophylaxis for a dental procedure, a Cesarean section and a major hip surgery in one patient each

The hypotheses of oral disease-associated perioprosthetic joint infections to understand the role of oral health for endoprostheses - a narrative review.

AIMS: Periprosthetic infections are a severe complication, causing enormous morbidity. The role of oral diseases in the development of such infections has been discussed controversially, showing a large discrepancy between prevalence of oral foci and infections of endoprostheses (EP). This narrative review aimed in explaining and discussing two hypotheses for the occurrence of oral disease-associated EP infections. METHODS AND RESULTS: The hypotheses include two mechanisms. (1) In case of an acute exacerbation during the early healingperiod after EP surgery (first 3 months). (2) Coincidental

[Prevention of hemorrhage and dental treatment of patients with congenital or acquired coagulopathies].

The physiopathology of the hemorrhagic blood coagulation disorders caused by genetic or aquired problems is described. Among the former the most frequent ones include the hemophilia of type A-B and the von Willebrand disease, among the latter the use of oral anticoagulant constitutes the most frequent cause. If the are not subjected to an adequate haemostatic prophylaxis, both patients with hemophilia and von Willebrand disease present a serious haemorrhagic risk as a consequence of dental practice. As far as the use of anticoagulants is concerned, a periodical monitoring of the time of prothr

Antibiotics for the prophylaxis of bacterial endocarditis in dentistry.

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis is a severe infection arising in the lining of the heart with a high mortality rate. Many dental procedures cause bacteraemia and it was believed that this may lead to bacterial endocarditis (BE) in a few people. Guidelines in many countries have recommended that prior to invasive dental procedures antibiotics are administered to people at high risk of endocarditis. However, recent guidance by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) in England and Wales has recommended that antibiotics are not required. OBJECTIVES: To determine whethe

The prevalence of cardiac valvular pathosis in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of valvular pathosis in a population of patients with SLE, to assess the candidacy of such patients for antibiotic prophylaxis before dental treatment. The hospital records of 112 patients with SLE were reviewed and screened for endocarditis, heart murmurs, and other valvular pathosis. Two of the 112 patients had confirmed cases of bacterial endocarditis. This prevalence is comparable to endocarditis prevalence rates in patients with prosthetic valves and is also three times that in patients with rheumatic heart disease. The high preval

[In vivo study of bacterial invasion in root planed and citric acid treated radicular surfaces of periodontally involved human teeth].

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether plaque bacteria invade the exposed radicular dentin after root planing or chemical root treatment in vivo. Eighteen caries-free human periodontally involved teeth with hopeless prognoses were studied. Fourteen teeth were scaled and root planed with hand curette type scalers. The proximal surface of each treated tooth was designated as the RP surface. The remaining half of the proximal surface was treated with citric acid (pH 1.0) for 3 minutes and was designated as the CA surface. Four untreated teeth served as controls. After 4 weeks, the t

Endocarditis following IUD insertion in a patient with tetralogy of Fallot.

The role of antibiotic prophylaxis for prevention of infective endocarditis is unknown. Endocarditis prophylaxis is recommended for certain high-risk individuals prior to dental procedures. To our knowledge, this is the first case reported in the literature of a patient with complex congenital heart disease developing endocarditis in the period immediately following otherwise uncomplicated intrauterine device insertion.

A randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel mouth rinse in patients with gingivitis.

BACKGROUND: This single-center, randomized controlled trial aimed to determine the effectiveness of a novel, biofilm-disrupting, mouth rinse that combines Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and essential oils in preventing re-accumulation of supragingival plaque and supragingival microbiome in patients with gingivitis after dental prophylaxis. METHODS: One hundred eighteen participants were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive twice-daily test mouth rinse (59) or carrier rinse control (59) for 12 weeks after dental prophylaxis. RESULTS: In a per-protocol analysis that included patients wh

Pediatric Dental Management of a Patient With Infantile Osteopetrosis in Remission: A Clinical Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Osteopetrosis is a rare genetic disorder characterized by increased bone density due to defective osteoclast function. Its clinical presentation varies according to subtype, and oral manifestations are frequent, potentially serving as early indicators of the disease. These findings place the pediatric dentist in a key role for early recognition and safe dental management. CASE: This case report describes the comprehensive dental management of a 7-year-old girl with a history of infantile osteopetrosis treated with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation during early infancy. The p

The clinical effects of a mouthrinse containing 0.1% octenidine.

The purpose of this three-month clinical trial was to evaluate the effects of a 0.1% octenidine mouthrinse on plaque, gingivitis, extrinsic dental stain, and the oral soft tissues. A total of 451 adult volunteer subjects was initiated into the study and given baseline dental examinations. The subjects were stratified into two balanced groups according to gender, plaque, and gingivitis scores. The subjects then received a dental prophylaxis and were provided with dentifrice, toothbrushes, and either a mouthrinse containing 0.1% octenidine dihydrochloride as the active ingredient or a similar pl

Procedures associated with infective endocarditis in adults. A case control study.

OBJECT: To assess the relative risk of infective endocarditis associated with various procedures and the protective efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis by a case-control study. BACKGROUND: Recommendations for the prevention of infective endocarditis are based on the hypothesis of a relationship between procedures and infective endocarditis which is supported by anecdotal reports and data from experimental models. METHODS: Cases met the Von Reyn's diagnostic criteria modified with echocardiographic and macroscopic findings Controls were recruited from cardiology or medicinal wards. Cases (n =

Endocarditis prophylaxis in a primary care clinic.

BACKGROUND: Primary care physicians often make decisions about the use of endocarditis prophylaxis (EP). Compliance with American Heart Association (AHA) recommendations has been found to be poor in hospitalized patients and in a dental school clinic. The purpose of this study was to examine the use of endocarditis prophylaxis in a primary care clinic. METHODS: The problem list of all adult patients seen in a primary care clinic in 1989 was reviewed for diagnoses that might require EP. Eighty-four charts were identified and reviewed. RESULTS: Sixty-five percent of the study patients had docu

[Diagnosis and clinical manifestations of dental plexalgia].

The article considers characteristics of clinical manifestations of dental plexalgia, a new form of the disease related to impairment of dental plexuses. In a clinicophysiological study of 56 patients with dental plexalgia conducted at a neurostomatological department the authors used rheofaciography, thermometry and thermography of the face skin, esthesiometry, and electrodiagnosis of the oral mucosa. Electrodiagnosis of the oral mucosa helps to specify the diagnosis of dental plexalgia. The authors describe differential diagnosis criteria reflecting the peculiarities of the clinical picture
