Self-reported occupational dermatological reactions among Danish dentists.

The aims of the study were to investigate the causes and prevalences of occupational dermatological reactions among Danish dentists. Questionnaires and telephone interviews with Danish dentists revealed that 37.8% reported skin reactions. In 27.2% of the cases the reactions were related to occupation, occurring with a point prevalence of 9.6%, and with a 1-yr period prevalence of 21.4%. The main causes were hand washing/soaps, latex gloves and (di)methacrylate-containing materials occurring at point prevalences of 7.1%, 1.3% and 1.7%, respectively. Hereditary hypophosphatemia rickets: an important awareness for dentists.

Because X-linked hypophosphatemia VDRR is reported to be the most common form of rickets in the United States today, it is important for dentists to be aware of this condition. Characteristic dental findings are often the first clinically noticeable signs of the disease. The confirmation of hypophosphatemia with dental findings will permit early diagnosis and prevent crippling rachitic deformities, otherwise certain to follow. Reports in the literature confirm the validity of conservative, prophylactic full coverage restorations in patients with VDRR.

Seventy-five Nigerian dentists were interviewed on their approach to the management of impacted third molars. The mean age of the dentists was 34.8 years, with a male/female ratio of 3.4:1. Most of the female dentists were found in the training institutions (p = 0.005). It has been suggested that mercury vapor may be transformed into highly toxic organomercury compounds by micro-organisms in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract.
