Affective disorders among patients with borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: The high co-occurrence between borderline personality disorder and affective disorders has led many to believe that borderline personality disorder should be considered as part of an affective spectrum. The aim of the present study was to examine whether the prevalence of affective disorders are higher for patients with borderline personality disorder than for patients with other personality disorders. METHODS: In a national cross-sectional study of patients receiving mental health treatment in Norway (N = 36 773), we determined whether psychiatric outpatients with borderline pers

Dependent personality traits and information processing: assessing the interpretation of ambiguous information using the Thematic Apperception Test.

OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to investigate interpretation bias in people with dependent personality traits. METHOD: Eight Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) cards were administered to participants (N=56) who scored high or low on DSM-III-R dependent personality pathology. Two independent judges rated the TAT stories using a rating list based on the cognitive model of the dependent and paranoid personality disorder. RESULTS: Controlling for self-esteem, the dependent interpretation bias appeared to be specific for dependent personality pathology. SEM analysis supported a mediation model

Validity of criteria for DSM-III self-defeating personality disorder.

Criteria for self-defeating personality disorder were examined using a standard measure in 148 psychiatric outpatients. The best individual criterion was self-defeating B (taken advantage of by others). Self-defeating A (sacrifices needs for others) and K (being hurt is sexually arousing) were of little value. Although some dependent, histronic, and avoidant criteria were also related to self-defeating personality disorder, the disorders appeared fairly clearly separate. There did appear to be more overlap (although not identity) with borderline personality disorder. It appears possible that i

Correlates of DSM-III personality disorder in panic disorder and agoraphobia.

One hundred eighty-seven patients meeting DSM-III criteria for panic disorder (n = 26) or agoraphobia with panic (n = 161) were assessed with the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire (PDQ), a self-rating scale designed to assess Axis II personality disorders and traits. Results replicated our earlier findings of a preponderance of dependent, avoidant, and histrionic features and the finding that patients exhibiting a greater number of personality traits were also significantly more symptomatic. Patients with the diagnosis of panic disorder did not differ on any personality disorder variables f

Effects of personality disorder and impulsivity on emotional adaptations in prison among women offenders.

The present study sought to better understand the influence of personality disorders and impulsivity on women's ability to adapt to incarcer … irginia prison. Results from regression models indicated that schizotypal, borderline, avoidant and dependent personality disorders and cognitive impulsivity were significant predictors of symptoms of anxiety and depression net of demographic covariates. Women possessing a diagnosis of paranoid personality disorder were at increased odds of having difficulty sleeping in prison …

The role of personality disorder in 'difficult to reach' patients with depression: findings from the ODIN study.

Individuals with personality disorders (especially paranoid personality disorder) tend to be reluctant to engage in treatment. This paper ai … her for patients with a comorbid diagnosis of personality disorder, especially paranoid, anxious or dependent personality disorder. The relatively low number of cases with some specific personality disorders (e.g. schizoid personality disorder) limited the study's power to reach conclusions about these specific disorders. This study focused on a community-based sample which may …

Asthenic personality, myth or reality.

One hundred and seventy five subjects admitted to hospital for neurotic conditions were assessed as to their personality types. Forty seven percent were judged as having personality traits consistent with the diagnosis of asthenic personality disorder. Thirteen of the 138 symptom, life history and psychological test items examined were found to be associated with the asthenic traits. Condensation of these thirteen items by factor analysis showed that two features--anxiety proneness and inability to cope with stress--together defined the disorder.

Childhood maltreatment and adult personality disorder symptoms: influence of maltreatment type.

The present study examines the effects of different types of childhood maltreatment on personality disorder symptoms in a sample of adults with no Axis I psychopathology. Participants reporting a history of moderate to severe maltreatment on the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (n = 70) were grouped by type of abuse and compared with a non-abused group (n = 35) with regard to the number of personality disorder symptoms endorsed. Physical/sexual abuse and emotional abuse/neglect each were associated with elevated symptoms of all three personality disorder clusters. Elevated symptoms of several sp

Interpersonal variability in dependent personality.

The interpersonal circumplex (IPC) was recommended as a personality trait dimensional model with good potential to identify the phenomenological scope of personality disorders whose core dysfunction involves maladaptive expression of interpersonal traits. The IPC was then applied to the reconceptualization of dependent personality and dependent personality disorder. In Study 1, Pincus and Gurtman's (1995) three interpersonal vectors of dependency were validated via factor analyses conducted on two large samples (N = 921; N = 472) and a reliable self-report measure, the 3 Vector Dependency Inve…

Personality and depression in women.

Personality disorders and traits should be assessed in studies concerned with the etiology and treatment of depression in women. There has been a considerable amount of research concerned with the effect of personality functioning on the etiology and treatment of depression, and much of this research has concerned personality traits and disorders for which significant gender differences and issues apply. The importance of personality functioning, and the particular relevance to women and gender-related issues, is illustrated in this paper with regard to dependent personality disorder and depen…

Personality traits associated with panic disorder: change associated with treatment.

Eighty-two subjects with panic disorder completed the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire (PDQ) before treatment and again after a period of relatively stable improvement 3 years later. At baseline, panic subjects scored higher than normal control subjects, who had been matched for age and sex, on avoidant, dependent, histrionic, and paranoid personality subscales. Improvement in panic symptoms after 3 years was associated with reductions in these same subscale scores. Examination of individual items that distinguished panic from normal subjects showed themes of dependency, lack of self-confi
