Bronopol allergic contact dermatitis.

Bronopol (2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1, 3-diol) is an antimicrobial compound widely used as a preservative, primarily in cosmetic formulations. Analysis of patch tests performed on our patients revealed an incidence of 12.5% relevant positive results to 0.5% and/or 0.25% bronopol. This result reflects a history of prolonged use of bronopol-containing lubricants in our referral population of patients with different types of severe, extensive dermatitis. Contact sensitization to bronopol in this population is probably facilitated by abnormal cutaneous barrier function. Our findings emphasize the nee

Contact dermatitis from Eriodictyon parryi: a novel cause of contact dermatitis in California.

Allergic contact dermatitis caused by Eriodictyon parryi, better known as poodle-dog bush, is a growing cause of contact dermatitis in California. Blooming after a large fire, E parryi is a threat to reforestation workers as well as countless outdoor enthusiasts across the state. This paper focuses on the epidemiology, identification, immunochemistry, pathophysiology, prevention, and treatment of contact dermatitis from this little-researched plant.

Contact dermatitis in a woodworker.

Woods are capable of causing allergic or irritant contact dermatitis which typically occurs on the exposed areas of the arms, face, and neck. The allergens found in woods include quinones, stilbenes, phenols, and terpenes. We report an 84-year-old woodworker who developed allergic contact dermatitis from Bolivian rosewood and Cocobolo wood. The patient was patch-tested using the North American Contact Dermatitis Group Standard Tray; 2,6 dimethoxyl 1,4 benzoquinone; and wood that he had been exposed to on a regular basis. Positive patch test reactions occurred to methyldibromo glutaronitrile ph

The prognosis of contact dermatitis.

This article reviews the prognosis of contact dermatitis, particularly of occupational contact dermatitis. Most studies document a poor prognosis for occupational and nonoccupational contact dermatitis. The prognoses of occupational and nonoccupational contact dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis, and allergic contact dermatitis are similar. Only a minority of studies on the prognosis of occupational contact dermatitis have found that a job change by the affected worker leads to clearing of the dermatitis. Dermatologic and nondermatologic factors associated with a poor prognosis are discuss

[Contact dermatitis in children].

Contact dermatitis is a common skin condition in children caused by environmental exposure to irritants or allergens. Manifestation of common endogenous eczemas, e.g. atopic dermatitis, causes differential diagnostic challenges. The diagnostic workup includes symptoms, dermatitis patterns, and exposure history. Patch testing is the gold standard for diagnosing allergic contact dermatitis and distinguishing allergic from irritant contact dermatitis. This review aims to describe contact dermatitis in children, including diagnostic procedures, differential diagnoses, and management strategies.

Pediatric Allergic Contact Dermatitis.

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) affects up to 20% of adults and children, although children are infrequently patch tested. Available data suggest that children and adults, with or without atopic dermatitis, have the same prevalence of ACD. Patch testing is the gold standard for evaluation of ACD. The Pediatric Baseline Series was recently published by expert consensus for use in pediatric patch testing, with additional allergens tested as guided by history. This article examines methods of patch testing and up-to-date data on pediatric ACD. The top allergens are reviewed, and avoidance strat

Contact dermatitis and nutrition.

There is a worldwide increase in food and nutrition-related contact dermatitis, including irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, systemic contact dermatitis, protein contact dermatitis, and photocontact dermatitis. A wide range of patients is affected by this condition, from those who consume certain foods as part of their diet to workers who handle food occupationally. Patch testing, analytical chemistry, and reporting may help in timely recognition of contact allergens. Elimination of exposure to the known food or supplement is imperative for treatment. Currently, more res

[Airborne allergic contact dermatitis].

In this case report, a 25-year-old woman presented with contact dermatitis caused by airborne exposure to isothiazolinones in paints. Allergic contact dermatitis is most frequently caused by direct contact with a product containing an allergen. However, in rare cases, allergic contact dermatitis can be caused by airborne exposure to an allergen. This report highlights the importance of considering airborne exposure in patients with unexplained dermatitis.

Laxative-Induced Contact Dermatitis.

A 5-year-old female with Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy and a history of constipation presented to the emergency department with a new blistering buttocks rash, which was initially concerning for nonaccidental burn. Upon further investigation, it was found that Ex-Lax had been given to the patient for constipation. This had resulted in a bowel movement, which led to an irritant dermatitis. The patient was eventually diagnosed with senna-induced erosive diaper dermatitis. This case report highlights the importance of a thorough history and physical examination to prevent an unnecessary child ab
