Modified Plasma Cytokine Profile in Occupational Dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Despite significant progress in the diagnosis of contact dermatitis, the identification by specific tests or biomarkers remains an unsolved issue, particularly when needed for the confirmation of the occupational origin of the disease. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the plasma proteome profile in occupational dermatitis in workers of paint industry. METHODS: The study has a case-control design, comparing exposed workers with and without occupational contact dermatitis, matched for age, gender, occupational history, and comorbidities. An immunological assay (Human XL Cytokine Array Ki

Occupational hand dermatitis in car repair workers.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to used gasoline engine oils during oil change and other automobile repair services is common for many mechanics, electrical technicians, and other car service workers. We aimed to determine the prevalence of hand dermatitis in car repair workers with different specialty and actual dermal exposure hazards in the workplace. METHODS: We examined the dermal problems in 153 male car repair workers and compared it to 140 office workers. Exposed and control groups were administered a Nordic Occupational Skin Questionnaire. Dermal exposure score also was calculated. RESULTS:

Interventions for preventing occupational irritant hand dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Occupational irritant hand dermatitis (OIHD) causes significant functional impairment, disruption of work, and discomfort in the working population. Different preventive measures such as protective gloves, barrier creams and moisturisers can be used, but it is not clear how effective these are. This is an update of a Cochrane review which was previously published in 2010. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of primary preventive interventions and strategies (physical and behavioural) for preventing OIHD in healthy people (who have no hand dermatitis) who work in occupations where th

Halometasone monohydrate (0.05%) in occupational contact dermatitis.

OBJECTIVE: The impact of occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) is often underestimated because of underreporting, and its management is also inadequate, especially in developing countries. Topical corticosteroids have remained the first line treatment but till date, there is no study on efficacy and safety of halometasone in OCD, and there is a paucity of data on its comparative efficacy in allergic and irritant variety. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of halometasone in OCD and to compare its effect in allergic and irritant types of OCD. METHODS: The present study is a pr

Occupational risk assessment and irritant contact dermatitis.

Dermatological disorders are a common workplace injury. Workers in many occupations are at increased risk of developing dermatological skin disorders due to chemical and physical hazards in the workplace. Contact irritant dermatitis can have adverse health effects on workers and may cause permanent scarring and disability. An occupational risk assessment may identify those workers at risk, and provide strategies to decrease the risk of developing contact irritant dermatitis and treatment options.

[Management of occupational dermatitis. Nine years' experience].

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate management problems concerning 301 workers with occupational dermatitis (OD) referred to the Occupational Health Institute of Brescia in the period 2000-2008. METHODS: We considered gender, age, job, referring physicians, diagnosis, latency between the onset of symptoms and the etiological diagnosis, examinations and tests performed before referral to our Institute. RESULTS: We diagnosed 168 cases of allergic contact dermatitis, 101 cases of irritant contact dermatitis and 32 other forms of dermatitis. 51.8% of the workers had been referred by general practitioners an

Interventions for preventing occupational irritant hand dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Occupational irritant hand dermatitis (OIHD) is an important cause of discomfort in the working population. Different preventive measures are in place but it is not clear how effective these are. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of interventions for preventing OIHD in healthy people who work in occupations where the skin is at risk of damage. SEARCH STRATEGY: In May 2010, we searched the Cochrane Skin Group Specialised Register, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials in The Cochrane Library, MEDLlNE and EMBASE. Conference proceedings, and ongoing trials registers were

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis in construction workers.

We report the patch test results of 449 construction workers who came as patients to the Occupational Dermatology Service of the Instituto Nacional de Medicina y Seguridad del Trabajo in Madrid between 1989 and 1993. 90.8% of them were patch tested, because they had cutaneous lesions or a clinical history suggestive of occupational dermatitis. 65.5% (268) of those patch tested showed one or more reactions connected with their work. Chromate at 42.1% was the main allergen, followed by cobalt, 20.5%, nickel, 10%, and epoxy resin, 7.5%. 25.9% (106) of patients showed sensitization to rubber compo

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from ethyl cyanoacrylate.

Glues based on cyanoacrylates are widely used as contact adhesives for metal, glass, rubber, plastics and textiles, as well for biological materials, including binding tissues and sealing wounds in surgery. In this paper, an apprentice cobbler with an occupational allergic contact dermatitis from an ethyl cyanoacrylate glue, in which the major monomer was shown to be the sensitizer, is reported. Initial patch testing with the cyanoacrylate glue dissolved in acetone with the Finn Chamber (aluminium) technique yielded false-negative reactions. Positive test reactions were obtained with the same
