Rotavirus is the main etiological agent that causes severe diarrheal diseases in newborns and young children up to two years. Every year, about one million children around the globe die of dehydration caused by Rotaviruses. The problem is even bigger in underdeveloped and developing countries. The results of our 18-month research, in the town Kragujevac and its surrounding area from December 1998 to May 2000 indicate that viruses are an important factor in the etiology of the acute diarrheal diseases in our population. In 124 children, aged 0 to 5, with the acute diarrheal diseases treated at

Cryptosporidium infection was found in association with acute diarrhoeal disease in ten patients (13%) of a total of 77 children below the age of 8 years admitted over a period of 1 year to Bhubaneswar Capital Hospital, Orissa state, India. Contrary to another report from South India, there were no asymptomatic cryptosporidium oocyst excretors detected either in the matched control group of 42 children without diarrhoea or in a group of 113 healthy school children investigated. A clustering of seven cases occurred in the months of the rainy season and of three cases in the winter months. Nine

The use of negative contrast electronmicroscopy of stool suspension in the investigation of the aetiology of childhood gastroenteritis has led to the recognition of a number of candidate viral agents. There is convincing evidence that rotavirus is the single most important cause of community acquired gastroenteritis, and is responsible for some nosocomial outbreaks. The epidemiology of rotavirus acqusition, differential clinical susceptibilities of young and older infants, pathogenesis of disease, mechanisms of immunity and breast milk protection, and the role of different viral serotypes are

Infantile perineal protrusion, a relatively newly recognized condition, is underreported in both the dermatologic and pediatric literature. The name "infantile perineal protrusion" has evolved based on the typical anatomic location, morphologic features, and prevalence in prepubertal children. It occurs in 3 settings: constitutional (sometimes genetic or familial); functional (after constipation, diarrhea, or other irritant exposure); or associated with lichen sclerosus et atrophicus. Recognition of infantile perineal protrusion by dermatologists and pediatricians has many implications regardi

Preschool-age rural Indonesian children were reexamined every 3 mo for 18 mo. An average of 3228 were free of xerophthalmia at the examination initiating each of the six, 3-mo follow-up intervals. Children with respiratory disease and/or a recent history of diarrhea at the start of an interval developed xerophthalmia by the end of the interval at more than twice the rate of their healthier peers (p less than 0.05) independent of anthropometric status. It appears that vitamin A deficiency and infections, especially diarrhea and respiratory disease, can establish a vicious cycle that induces and
