Mice carrying mutations in Wise (Sostdc1) display defects in many aspects of tooth development, including tooth number, size and cusp pattern. To understand the basis of these defects, we have investigated the pathways modulated by Wise in tooth development. We present evidence that, in tooth development, Wise suppresses survival of the diastema or incisor vestigial buds by serving as an inhibitor of Lrp5- and Lrp6-dependent Wnt signaling. Woolly hair nevus is a rare condition characterized by a structural anomaly of the hair, restricted to certain areas of the scalp. The hair becomes coiled and slightly hypopigmented. The term woolly hair refers to changes that affect all the scalp and has a hereditary character. We present a case of woolly hair nevus, that developed at the age of 2 years, associated with dental diastema and verrucous epidermal nevus.

This article reports a clinical case involving an 8-year-old boy with two mesiodentes. The supernumerary teeth caused both a functional alteration (malocclusion) and an esthetic one (interincisal diastema), both of which affected his quality of living. Surgical removal of the supernumerary teeth and orthodontic follow-up was proposed, in agreement with the treatment established in the literature. This treatment produced satisfactory results in terms of both esthetics and functionality.

Inherited dental anomalies such as hypodontia, supernumerary teeth, enamel defects, and diastema are evident in large segments of most populations. Although treatment options for many of these conditions are ever improving, much remains to be understood about their etiology and pathophysiology. In this review, the authors hope to enthuse dental professionals into aiding the human geneticist by collaborating in studies seeking the underlying genetic cause of dental anomalies and referring patients presenting these conditions to the human geneticist.

Dubowitz syndrome is a rare condition in which the affected individual presents with dysmorphic facial features and manifests growth retardation. Although the condition is well reported in the medical literature, the dental manifestations have not been discussed in great detail. Some of the dental features reported include macrodontia, hypodontia, delayed eruption, and midline diastema. The purpose of this case report was to describe a young Chinese patient with Dubowitz syndrome with specific oral features.

Uncomplicated hypospadias was found in eight members of a large, consanguineous Bedouin family. Virilization and fertility were normal in the only postpubertal individual. The inheritance is most likely autosomal recessive and we suggest that in some of the familial cases in which polygenic or multifactorial inheritance was previously proposed, homozygosity for recessive genes may be responsible for the increased risk to siblings. Dominantly transmitted hypertelorism with diastema was an independent and coincidental finding in this family.

Patients presenting reduced periodontium represent a major concern for orthodontists. The purpose of this article is to present the clinical case of an adult patient who presented sequel of periodontal disease (diastemas) compromising her dental aesthetics. She was subjected to an orthodontic treatment with the application of light forces distant from the teeth with reduced periodontium. A periodontal support therapy was successfully implemented. The final stage of the treatment indicated satisfactory occlusal and periodontal characteristics.
