Diastolic mitral block was revealed by ++Doppler echocardiography in patients with atrioventricular block degree I, II and III in atrial flutter. The leading mechanism in pathogenesis of diastolic mitral regurgitation lies in delayed contraction of the left ventricle in relation to the left atrium causing incomplete closure of mitral cusps. Other factors contributing to diastolic mitral insufficiency involve overloading of the left ventricle and rigidity of its myocardium. All the patients with atrioventricular block and diastolic mitral regurgitation showed tricuspid diastolic regurgitation.

Recently, considerable effort has been directed toward the application of Doppler methods for detecting diastolic dysfunction. Recordings of transmitral filling velocity as obtained from pulsed-wave Doppler have been extensively investigated as a noninvasive method for determining left ventricular diastolic filling properties. Although Doppler parameters appear to reflect volumetric transmitral flow, close correlations with invasive descriptors of diastolic performance have not been found. Furthermore, Doppler transmitral velocities are sensitive to changes in ventricular preload, afterload, a

The effectiveness of coronary venous retroperfusion treatment of an ischemic myocardial segment was assessed by measurements of regional and global myocardial function in 16 dogs. The left anterior descending coronary artery was acutely occluded for 75 minutes. After the first 30 minutes of occlusion, diastolic retroperfusion was instituted for 45 minutes by synchronized pumping of arterial blood from the brachial artery into the anterior interventricular coronary vein. Data collected in the preocclusion control period, during occlusion and the subsequent retroperfusion period included simulta

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Impaired left ventricular diastolic function and increased left ventricular filling pressure are frequently noted in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), even in early stages. The association of increased left ventricular filling pressure with cardiovascular and renal outcomes remains uncertain in CKD. This study is designed to assess whether the ratio of transmitral E-wave velocity (E) to early diastole mitral velocity (Ea) is associated with cardiovascular events and progression to dialysis in patients with CKD stages 3-5.
METHODS: This longitudinal study enrolled 35…
