[Primary intestinal lymphangiectasia (Waldmann's disease)].

Primary intestinal lymphangiectasia (PIL), Waldmann's disease, is a rare disorder of unknown etiology characterized by dilated intestinal lacteals leading to lymph leakage into the small-bowel lumen and responsible for protein-losing enteropathy leading to lymphopenia, hypoalbuminemia and hypogammaglobulinemia. PIL is generally diagnosed before 3 years of age but may be diagnosed in older patients. The main symptom is bilateral lower limb edema. Edema may be moderate to severe including pleural effusion, pericarditis or ascites. Protein-losing enteropathy is confirmed by the elevated 24-h stoo

Is it possible to achieve an acceptable disease control by dietary therapy alone in Berardinelli Seip type 1? Experience from a case report.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Severe metabolic complications generally manifest at an early age in Berardinelli - Seip congenital lipodystrophy (BSCL) and their management is especially challenging. Nutritional intervention with low lipid diets is considered by experts to be fundamental in treating the disease when associated with medical therapy, however little is known about the beneficial effects of dietary interventions alone. AIM: To underline the importance of a well-structured low-fat diet in BSCL patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: A BSCL male patient strictly followed a hypocaloric hypolipem

Real-World Management of High Stool Output in Patients with Short Bowel Syndrome: An International Multicenter Survey.

BACKGROUND: International practice guidelines for high-stool-output (HSO) management in short bowel syndrome (SBS) are available, but data on implementation are lacking. This study describes the approach used to manage HSO in SBS patients across different global regions. METHODS: This is an international multicenter study evaluating medical management of HSO in SBS patients using a questionnaire survey. Thirty-three intestinal-failure centers were invited to complete the survey as one multidisciplinary team. RESULTS: Survey response rate was 91%. Dietary recommendations varied based on anato

Cholesterol-lowering probiotics as potential biotherapeutics for metabolic diseases.

Cardiovascular diseases are one of the major causes of deaths in adults in the western world. Elevated levels of certain blood lipids have been reported to be the principal cause of cardiovascular disease and other disabilities in developed countries. Several animal and clinical trials have shown a positive association between cholesterol levels and the risks of coronary heart disease. Current dietary strategies for the prevention of cardiovascular disease advocate adherence to low-fat/low-saturated-fat diets. Although there is no doubt that, in experimental conditions, low-fat diets offer an

Body fat, eating behaviours, and well-being as predictors of negative body talk among college students: a moderation analysis by sex.

BACKGROUND: Negative body talk (e.g., body shaming) among college students exacerbates mental health risks (e.g., eating disorders, depression) and peer body anxiety through social norms. This study examined multifactorial mechanisms and gender differences with an aim informing mental health interventions. METHODS: This study was conducted on 789 college students (260 males and 529 females), 18–23 years, from a university in Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province. Data were collected by standardised instruments: body fat percentage, muscle mass, and height were measured using a body composition meter

Time-restricted eating promotes sustained fat loss in Drosophila.

While current therapeutics restricting calorie intake, such as GLP-1 agonists, induce fat loss for many people, they are ineffective for others and concerns remain about their long-term effects on health, particularly loss of lean muscle mass. Moreover, many quickly regain fat if they stop treatment. In contrast, time-restricted eating does not restrict calorie intake but instead restricts the time window for eating and prevents obesity in mice and humans. Here we investigated the effects of intermittent T ime- R estricted F eeding (iTRF), which extends lifespan and delays markers of aging, on

Effects of a low-lipid diet on the gut microbiome and head kidney transcriptome of juvenile Chinook Salmon.

OBJECTIVE: Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. reared in production hatcheries are typically fed high-lipid, energy-dense diets to achieve large size and high body condition prior to release. In contrast, juveniles in natural environments tend to consume low-lipid, high-protein diets, and fish reared for research or conservation purposes are sometimes fed diets that are formulated to mimic natural diets and promote wild-like phenotypes. Understanding how these alternative diets affect fish health beyond growth and body condition could ultimately contribute to improving hatchery fish fitness. MET

Coral calcium carried hydrogen ameliorates the severity of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis induced by a choline deficient high carbohydrate fat-free diet in elderly rats.

Hydrogen has been reported to act as an antioxidant, anti-apoptosis and anti-inflammatory agent. Coral calcium carried hydrogen (G2-SUISO) is a safer and more convenient form of hydrogen agent than others. The mechanism underlying the hepatoprotective effects of G2-SUISO using an elderly non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) rat model was investigated. Two days after fasting, six-month-old elderly male F344/NSlc rats were given a choline deficient high carbohydrate fat-free (CDHCFF) diet from day 0 to day 3 as CDHCFF control group, and then switched to a normal diet from days 4 to 7 with or wit

High-dose oral contraceptives induce hyperinsulinemia without altering immune activation in diet-induced obesity which persists even following a dietary low-fat diet intervention.

Combined oral contraceptives (COCs) are known to cause weight gain and alter metabolic and immunological pathways. However, modifications in arterial or venous thrombotic risk profiles of women of reproductive ages on COC remain unclear. The study aimed at assessing the impact of COC on immune activation in diet-induced obesity. We further established whether the dietary intervention of switching from a high-fat diet (HFD) to a low-fat diet (LFD) attenuates immunological responses. Twenty (n=20) five-week-old female Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into two diet groups of HFD (n=15) a

Fat preference and fat intake in individuals with and without anorexia nervosa.

Fat restriction is a characteristic eating behavior among individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), and laboratory meal studies demonstrate restricted fat intake among low-weight patients. The Geiselman Food Preference Questionnaire-I© (FPQ) is a validated self-report measure that yields a fat preference score (FPS). Prior research reported that patients with AN had a significantly lower FPS than did healthy control (HC) participants. The goal of the current study was to compare self-reported fat preference (FPS) to fat intake (multi-item meal (MIM) study) in low-weight ANs and HCs. Specific aim

Dietary Fat Content Influences PanIN Progression and Pancreatic Cancer Development in Mice.

UNLABELLED: Dietary macronutrient composition has emerged as a key modulator of pancreatic tumorigenesis, yet the impact of lipid-rich diets, particularly ketogenic diets (KD), on the earliest stages of pancreatic cancer development remains unclear. To investigate how dietary lipids shape the initiation and progression of Kras-driven neoplasia, we examined the effects of a low-fat diet (LFD), high-fat diet (HFD), and KD in the Ptf1aCreERT2;KrasG12V (AcinarKrasG12V) mouse model. KD-fed mice showed the shortest survival (median 26 ± 7 days) compared with the standard diet (SD, 87 ± 29; P = 0.02)

Fat and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

It is common practice to prescribe avoidance of fatty foods to patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease; however, there is no good evidence supporting the benefit of such a prescription. Several reports looking at gastro-oesophageal reflux after meals of different fat content have been controversial probably because of differences in caloric load, volume and osmolarity, factors which may independently influence reflux. Recent observations suggest that fatty meals do not promote gastro-oesophageal reflux nor alter the competence of the oesophagogastric junction in comparison to balanced

Biochemical characteristics of different forms of protein-energy malnutrition: an experimental model using young rats.

I. In three separate experiments, four groups of five to eight young male rats were fed either (i) a high-protein diet, for which the net dietary protein:total metabolizable energy ratio (NDp:E) was 0-1 (HP diet); or (ii) a low-protein diet, for which NDp:E was 0-04 (LP diet). In both these groups, food intake was ad lib. In group (iii) the HP diet was given in an amount approximately equal to that taken by the LP group fed ad lib. (HP-restricted). In group (iv) rats were fasted for 48 h after receiving the HP diet (HP-fasted). Each experiment lasted 4 weeks. 2. In the LP and HP-restricted gro

Diet for patients with a short bowel: high fat or high carbohydrate?

Eight patients with a short bowel resulting from intestinal resection and clinically stable for at least 6 mo were studied on two diets. Each diet was given for 5 days at a time and crossed over with the other. Both diets contained 20% of total calories as protein. The high-fat diet had 60% of calories as fat and 20% as carbohydrate. This ratio was reversed in the high-carbohydrate diet. Both diets were lactose free with low fiber. Fluid intake was kept constant. The results showed that there was no difference in the blood chemistry, stool, or ostomy volume, the zinc, calcium, and magnesium ba

Dlk1 expression relates to visceral fat expansion and insulin resistance in male and female rats with postnatal catch-up growth.

BACKGROUND: Although prenatal and postnatal programming of metabolic diseases in adulthood is well established, the mechanisms underpinning metabolic programming are not. Dlk1, a key regulator of fetal development, inhibits adipocyte differentiation and restricts fetal growth. METHODS: Assess DLk1 expression in a Wistar rat model of catch-up growth following intrauterine restriction. Dams fed ad libitum delivered control pups (C) and dams on a 50% calorie-restricted diet delivered pups with low birth weight (R). Restricted offspring fed a standard rat chow showed catch-up growth (R/C) but tho
