Diphyllobothriasis nihonkaiense: possibly acquired in Switzerland from imported Pacific salmon.

A 5-year-old Japanese boy passed tapeworm strobila while he was living in Switzerland. During a short visit to Japan, he was successfully treated with a single dose of praziquantel. DNA sequences of ITS1, cox1 and nd3 genes from the tapeworm were compatible with those of Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense rather than Diphyllobothrium latum, which is prevalent in Europe. The patient consumed imported salmon in Switzerland. This case highlights the globalization of D. nihonkaiense, which was once restricted to the Far East, and reflects the worldwide demand for seafood.

Diphyllobothriasis in a nine-year-old child in India: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: The Diphyllobothrium genus belongs to the Diphyllobothridea order of tapeworms. Diphyllobothrium spp., which is commonly known as fish tapeworm, is generally transmitted in humans, but also in other species, such as bears, dogs, cats, foxes, and other terrestrial carnivores. Although worldwide in distribution, the original heartland of Diphyllobothrium spp. spreads across Scandinavia, northern Russia, and western Serbia. We report a rare case that occurred in India. CASE PRESENTATION: A nine-year-old south Indian girl was brought to the casualty at the Prathima Institute of Medi

Molecular identification of the Diphyllobothrium species causing diphyllobothriasis in Chilean patients.

Diphyllobothriasis caused by the infection of adult Diphyllobothrium tapeworms sporadically occurs in Chile. The occurrence of the disease is closely linked to the consumption of raw or undercooked freshwater and marine fishes. Diagnosis of diphyllobothriasis has been based on laboratory examinations of the morphological characteristics of proglottids and eggs passed in the feces. Although determination of the parasite to the species level is possible through histologic examination of proglottid specimens, the parasites of patients who only discharge eggs cannot be diagnosed to the species lev…

[Human diphyllobothriasis by Diphyllobothrium pacificum. A new case in Antofagasta, Chile].

We report a 26 years old asymptomatic female that expelled spontaneously a 39 proglottid strobila. The taxonomic study of proglottids and eggs found in the stool examination concluded that the patient was infected by Diphyllobothrium pacificum. This infection was probably acquired by the ingestion of raw fish (Sciaena deliciosa) with lemon in a traditional plate called "cebiche". She was treated with a single dose of praziquantel in a dose of 10 mg/kg body weight. After 24 h of treatment there were no scolices on feces. The patient did not have anemia. All eight family members studied, did not

Reappearance of human diphyllobothriasis in a limited area of Lake Como, Italy.

BACKGROUND: Very few sporadic cases of autochthonous diphyllobothriasis have been reported in Italy during the past 20 years, probably due to the drastic decrease or disappearance of some fish species, mainly Perca fluviatilis L., known as the intermediate host of the infective larval stage of this tapeworm. However, increasing consumption of raw or undercooked fish during the last years as influenced by Oriental cuisine, played an important role in a number of new single cases of the infection or microepidemics. PATIENTS: We describe six cases which were diagnosed within a period of 4 months…

[Clinical observation periods for diphyllobothriasis patients depending on the invasion period].

Discrepancy between the terms of clinical observation and normalization of gastric functions was established on the basis of a time-course study of gastric secretory function in 189 diphylobothriasis patients examined before the treatment and 1-2, 5-6, 10-12 months after it. Recovery of the secretory function took less than 5-6 months in people recovered from short-term invasion (less than a year), while in patients recovered from long-term invasion (lasting more than a year) it took 10-12 months, and reduced secretory activity in the latter group was still observed in many cases 10-12 months

[The functional status of the small intestine and lipid metabolism in diphyllobothriasis patients].

198 diphyllobothriasis patients have been examined before and 1-2, 4-6, 10-12 months after dehelminthization. The absorption of fats and carbohydrates by the small intestine was studied; total lipids, total phospholipids and their range in the serum were determined. Fucose content in the intestinal juice and the overnight portion of urine was determined for functional evaluation of the mucosal protective barrier. The studies revealed alterations in lipid and carbohydrate absorptions by the small intestine as well as that of the mucosal protective barrier in the gastroduodenal zone, and changes…
