BACKGROUND: Intestinal disaccharidase activities are decreased in untreated celiac disease and also in other conditions without villous atrophy. Of 908 patients examined for suspected malabsorption, 37 (4.1%) had generalized disaccharidase deficiency without villous atrophy. The aim was to determine if generalized disaccharidase deficiency without villous atrophy represented latent celiac disease.
METHODS: Case notes and histology of the 37 patients were reviewed. History and blood investigations including antigliadin and endomysial antibodies were checked. Where celiac disease was suspected,

The effect of supplementing a cornsoybean diet (C) with glucose (G) or maltose (M) on young broilers (from hatch to 3 wk of age) affected by stunting syndrome (SS) was studied. Stunting syndrome was induced by orally administering an inoculum prepared from the intestines of SS broiler chicks. Relative to the M diet, the G diet improved growth and feed utilization and increased feed intake in naive (NA) control chickens. The C diet was intermediate in this respect. In contrast to the NA chickens, diet did not affect growth or feed utilization in SS chicks. Changes in the relative weights of the

AIM: To compare the effect of a diet low in fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides and polyols (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols - FODMAP) and rebamipide on carbohydrate tolerance and disaccharidases activity in patients with maldigestive enteropathy (ENMP).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 61 patients with ENMP with reduced small intestine carbohydrases. Their glucoamylase activity was 100 ng glucose/mg tissue × min (quartile 53, 72), maltase - 504 (quartile 258, 708), sucrase - 43 (quartile 25, 58), lactase - 8 (quartile 4, 20). Group 1 inc…

Abdominal pain has been associated with disaccharidase deficiencies. While relationships with individual symptoms have been assessed, relationships between disaccharidase deficiencies and symptom complexes or inflammation have not been evaluated in this group. The primary aims of the current study were to assess relationships between disaccharidase deficiency and symptoms or symptom complexes and duodenal inflammation, respectively. Patients with abdominal pain who underwent endoscopy with evaluation of disaccharidase activity levels were identified. After excluding all patients with inflammat

The objective of this study was to quantify the differences in the activity of jejunal maltase and isomaltase between two groups of steers with average dry matter intake (DMI) and differing average daily gain (ADG). DMI and ADG were measured in crossbred steers (n = 69; initial body weight = 456 ± 5.0 kg) consuming a finishing diet containing 67.8% dry-rolled corn, 20.0% wet distillers grains with solubles, 8.0% alfalfa hay, and 4.2% vitamin/mineral supplement on a dry matter basis for 84 d. Jejunal mucosal samples were collected from eight steers with the greatest (high) or least (low) ADG an

Infection or other inflammatory insults in the small intestine often result in reduced disaccharidase enzyme levels. Using a mouse model of giardiasis, we examined the role of host immunity and pathogen virulence in mediating disaccharidase deficiency postinfection (p.i.). C57BL/6J mice were infected with two strains, WB and GS, of the human parasite Giardia duodenalis. The levels of sucrase, maltase, and lactase decreased in wild-type mice p.i. with the GS strain but not with the WB strain. Both CD4-deficient and SCID mice failed to eliminate the infection and did not exhibit disaccharidase d

AIM: To establish reference values for disaccharidase activities in Belgian children and to compare enzyme activities with those of non-Belgian Caucasian children.
METHODS: Data from Belgian children who had undergone endoscopic jejunal biopsies (1994-2000) for suspected malabsorption were reviewed. The patients were divided into three groups based on histology: (A) normal (n = 201), (B) moderate changes (n = 58) and (C) (sub)total atrophy (n = 14). The 95% reference limits for disaccharidase activities (U/g protein) were calculated for group A after exclusion of patients with a positive hydr

Hypolactasia associated with severe iron-deficiency anemia has been reported in several studies. The objective of the present study was to d … ved and both the degree and duration of the anemic process. Analysis of other studies on intestinal disaccharidases in anemia suggests that the mechanism of these changes may be functional, i.e., that the enterocytes may suffer a reduction in their ability to synthesize these enzymes.

BACKGROUND: Functional bowel disorder (FBD) may be caused by a decrease in disaccharidase activity. Thus, the timely diagnosis of disaccharidase deficiency could lead to a better prognosis in patients with this condition.
AIM: To determine the potential value of intestinal disaccharidases glucoamylase, maltase, sucrase, and lactase in understanding the etiology and pathogenesis of FBD.
METHODS: A total of 82 FBD patients were examined. According to the Rome IV criteria (2016), 23 patients had diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), 33 had functional diarrhea, 10 had constipation…

BACKGROUND: Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is common in critically ill children and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Recognition and management of AKI is often delayed, predisposing patients to risk of clinically significant fluid accumulation (Fluid Overload (FO)). Early recognition and intervention in high risk patients could decrease fluid associated morbidity. We aim to assess an AKI Clinical Decision Algorithm (CDA) using a sequential risk stratification strategy integrating the Renal Angina Index (RAI), urine Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin (NGAL) and the Furos

BACKGROUND: Tests for stool reducing sugars and stool pH are ordered for children with osmotic diarrhea to screen for carbohydrate malabsorption.
METHODS: We compared the results of the two screening tests, stool reducing sugars and stool pH, with a more definitive result from an intestinal tissue disaccharidase activity assay ordered for pediatric patients (<18 years old). Overall, 159 patients had results for tissue disaccharidase and stool reducing sugars, but only 115 had additional results of stool pH. Forty-six of the 159 patients had mild, moderate, or severe disaccharidase deficiencie

Diabetes-prone BioBreeding (BBdp) rats often present an enteropathy that may precede the onset of autoimmune insulitis. The aim of the present study was to assess the influence of sex, the time course, the strain specificity, the distribution along the intestinal tract and the effect of diet for the changes in the activity of gut invertase, maltase and lactase found in BBdp rats, as compared with both Wistar-Furth (WF) and diabetes-resistant BioBreeding (BBc) rats. These hydrolases were measured, therefore, at day 10, 30, 45, 70, 95 and 120 in three intestinal segments of WF, BBc and BBdp rats

Newly hatched female Muscovy ducklings were randomly separated into 2 groups of 12 and 1 group of 13. Ducklings in the first 2 groups were each orally inoculated with 0.5 ml of sterile normal saline containing 0 and 3 x 10(6) trophozoites of Cochlosoma anatis, respectively. Birds in the third group were each orally inoculated with 3 x 10(6) trophozoites for 5 consecutive days. Birds were weighed daily for the first 5 days and then on days 7, 14 and 21 post-inoculation (p.i.). On days 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22 p.i., 1 bird from each group was killed and samples of intestine at 7 levels

The enzymatic activities of maltase, sucrase, and lactase were determined in jejunal biopsies obtained from 24 children with gastrointestina … not correlate with the degree of malnutrition. These results indicate that PEM affects each of the disaccharidases of the jejunal mucosa differently, with lactase being most sensitive to PEM and reflecting most closely the degree of PEM. In contrast, morphological changes showed no correlation with the degree of PEM.
