Intensive care in the developing world.

Appropriate and sustainable intensive care practice is possible even in the resource-limited locations of sub-Saharan Africa. Data from seven sub-Saharan African countries indicates that the majority of patients served are surgical. Comparison between intensive care units is difficult due to lack of laboratory support, which precludes the severity sickness scores used internationally. Hospital mortality can be reduced by increasing nurse/patient ratios, adequate monitoring and initiating postoperative intermittent positive pressure ventilation when required. Equipment should include appropriat

Basic Principles of Disinfection and Sterilization in Intensive Care and Anesthesia and Their Applications during COVID-19 Pandemic.

UNLABELLED: Understanding the concepts of disinfection, sterilization, cleaning and asepsis is of prime importance to prevent transmission of infection to patients and to protect healthcare workers (HCWs). Proper disinfection of surfaces after cleaning, an important consideration at all times, has assumed special significance during the current pandemic. The global shortage of disposable equipment such as personal protective equipment (PPE), specifically N95 masks and surgical 3 ply masks, and other items makes the HCWs vulnerable to transmission of infection while caring for these patients. T…

Evaluating the Quality of Rigid Optic Videolaryngoscopy Image Taken Through Dental Protection Cap and Its Feasibility as Additional Barrier Method Against COVID-19.

Videolaryngoscopy screening is essential to help assessing human larynx. The use of 70° optical fiber in association with image recording by analog or digital cameras is one of the methods adopted to perform this examination. Endoscopic exams can contaminate the equipment with several microorganisms. The pandemic caused by the new coronavirus reinforces the importance of developing efficient barrier methods to be adopted in videolaryngoscopy procedures. Although dental intraoral camera covers are a barrier method authorized by Brazilian health organs, it has not yet been used in videolaryngosc

Reprocessing of single-use medical devices in cardiology: a systematic literature review of safety and performance characteristics applied to cardiac electrophysiology.

AIMS: The rising burden of cardiovascular diseases, especially atrial fibrillation, has increased demand for electrophysiology (EP) procedures in Europe, driving greater reliance on disposable devices like diagnostic and ablation catheters. Reprocessing single-use medical devices offers potential economic and environmental benefits, yet concerns persist regarding device integrity and safety. Under the European Union Medical Device Regulation, reprocessing is permitted if national laws allow it; however, implementation varies across Member States. This systematic literature review evaluates the

Potential impacts to human health from climate change: A comparative life-cycle assessment of single-use versus reusable devices flexible ureteroscopes.

Climate change poses a significant global health challenge, with medical procedures contributing substantially to CO2 emissions. Urology, as part of the broader healthcare sector, has begun integrating Planetary Health concepts to address this issue. While earlier studies have focused on Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) of urological procedures, these evaluations remain data-dependent, and insights into intra-hospital emissions are limited. This study introduces a methodical approach for analyzing intra-institutional processes of LCA for single-use and reusable flexible ureterorenoscopes (fURS). T

The case of "public congregation vs. COVID-19 PPE pollution": Evidence, lessons, and recommendations from the annual pilgrimage to the Catholic Holy Site in Mexico City, Mexico.

Pollution from personal protective equipment (PPE), particularly face masks, has surfaced in the marine and terrestrial environments globally since the COVID-19 outbreak due to improper disposal practices and inadequate waste management, raising widespread alarm and attention. Our understanding of the prevalence and distribution of PPE in highly populated metropolitan areas is still emerging, and studies focusing specifically on developing countries in Latin America remain sparse. This study attempted to "kill two birds with one stone" by (1) addressing this knowledge gap by analyzing the degr

Impact of Three Single-Step Decontamination Methods on Respirators and Medical Gowns.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many methods of decontamination were proposed to combat the severe shortages of disposable personal protective equipment (PPE), such as N95 respirators and gowns, for healthcare workers. Although several decontamination methods were granted emergency use authorizations for N95 respirators, no methods were granted for gowns. The main concerns for decontamination of disposable PPE are twofold. First, the method must adequately decontaminate the PPE, and second, the device must retain its performance requirements after decontamination. The current study examined auto
