There are currently no evidence-based treatment recommendations for impulse control disorders, which include intermittent explosive disorder (IED), kleptomania and pyromania. Therefore, this systematic review sought to identify all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated pharmacological treatments for impulse control disorders, to evaluate their efficacy and tolerability. Searches were conducted within MEDLINE, PsychINFO, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) databases. Eight studies were included, six investigated pharmacotherapies

The purpose of this commentary is to investigate the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying hypersexuality and its manifestation in neurological diseases through a meta-analysis. Studies were identified by searching on PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane databases. All results of each database between 2014 and 2020 were evaluated for possible inclusion. After an accurate revision of complete manuscripts, forty articles satisfied the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Data from our meta-analysis indicated hypersexuality to be a frequent sexual disorder in patients with neurological disorders, espe

Parkinson's disease is characterized by a variety of motor and non-motor symptoms. More than two hundred years have passed since its description, but we still discover its new manifestations. Abnormal behaviors include impulse control disorders, dopamine dysregulation syndrome, psychotic disorders and others. However, two new phenomena have been recently described in patients with PD. It can manifest in the form of doing inappropriate actions which patient doesn't recognize, or pronouncing/writing unsuitable words and phrases. Patients can't remember such episodes, but find «signs» of their un

BACKGROUND: Caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine are the three most commonly used psychoactive substances in the world. Given the known propensity of these substances to influence behavior, the relationship between these substances and aggressive and impulsive behaviors, in particular is of interest.
METHODS: 1062 adult individuals participated in this study including those with Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) and non-aggressive healthy (HC) and psychiatric (PC) controls. Data regarding current and life use of caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine were recorded as were responses on measures of agg

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a surgical option for advanced Parkinson's disease. Although DBS is used to treat motor fluctuation, DBS may affect non-motor symptoms including mood disorders, cognitive dysfunction, and behavior problems. Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are abnormal behaviors with various manifestations such as pathological gambling, hypersexuality, compulsive shopping, and binge eating, which can affect the quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease. The effect of DBS on ICD is controversial. Reducing medication by DBS may improve ICDs, however, worsening or even d

In the past decade, impulse control disorders, punding, and dopamine dysregulation syndrome (which we refer to collectively as disinhibitory psychopathologies) have been increasingly recognized in treated patients with Parkinson's disease. Practicing neurologists must understand these problems to limit potential harm. In this article, we summarize current knowledge regarding these behavioral disorders, including phenomenology, epidemiology, pathophysiology, and treatment.

Impulse control disorders (ICDs) constitute a group of relatively common psychiatric conditions. ICDs typically involve pleasurable or hedonic behaviors (e.g. gambling, shopping or sex) that are performed repetitively, excessively or compulsively, to an extent that interferes in major areas of life functioning. Over the past decade, case reports, case studies and controlled examinations have reported ICDs in neurological patients, particularly those with Parkinson's disease (PD). A relationship between dopamine agonist treatment and ICDs was initially suggested on the basis of clinical observa

In biological suicide research, low cerebrospinal fluid-5-hydroxyindolacetic acid (CSF-5HIAA) concentrations have been associated with suicidality, aggression and impulsivity. However, it frequently appears that the interpretation of existing study results is flawed. The analysis of various published findings suggests that contaminating factors like impulsivity or depressive symptoms in suicide attempters are often not taken into consideration at the time of suicide. The seemingly 'robust' association of low CSF-5HIAA concentration with 'suicidality' and 'aggression' is in fact rather weak. Re

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review examines the shared and unique risk factors for intermittent explosive disorder (IED), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder (CD), aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of their etiological pathways and inform future intervention strategies.
METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search across seven databases (Web of Science, APA PsycINFO, MEDLINE, PubMed, Cochrane, CENTRAL and Embase) for studies examining risk factors for IED, ADHD and CD. A total of 44 studies were included, focusing on genetic, environmental and psy

INTRODUCTION: Impulse control and related behavioral disorders (ICBDs) commonly complicate Parkinson's disease (PD) course. The ICBDs spectrum encompasses two groups of conditions, with distinct pathophysiology: proper 'impulse control disorders (ICDs)' (e.g. gambling) and the 'ICDs related disorders (ICDs-RD)' (e.g. punding). Behavioral disturbances are associated with dopamine replacement therapies. ICBDs affect quality of life of patients and caregivers, making their management essential for reducing PD overall burden.
AREAS COVERED: This article reviews current management strategies for I

Impulse Control Disorder (ICD) in Parkinson's disease is a behavioral addiction induced by dopaminergic therapies, but otherwise unclear etiology. The current study investigates the interaction of reward processing variables, dopaminergic therapy, and risky decision-making and subjective feelings in patients with versus without ICD. Patients with (n = 18) and without (n = 12) ICD performed a risky decision-making task both 'on' and 'off' standard-of-care dopaminergic therapies (the task was performed on 2 different days with the order of on and off visits randomized for each patient). During e
