Immature spermatozoa from the testes, in contrast, were damaged by freeze-drying. Allyl alcohol-induced LDH leakage from isolated rat hepatocytes was preceded by a decrease in rhodmine 123 retention, signifying a loss of mitochondrial membrane potential. Addition of dithiothreitol (DTT) prevented the drop in membrane potential and completely prevented cell killing by allyl alcohol. The cathepsin B1-like, alpha-N-benzoyl-DL-arginine-2-naphthylamide (BANA) hydrolyzing activity of rat skin extract was studied. The enzyme was extracted into low ionic strength buffers, and was activated by dithiothreitol, EDTA and KCN. Incubation of the extract at acidic pH resulted in a 3.6-fold increase in its BANA hydrolase activity. The presence of inhibitor(s) of BANA hydrolase in the skin extract was indicated by the non-linearity of the activity/enzyme concentration curve and by Sephadex G-100 gel chromatography, which also caused separation of several other skin proteases.

A primary-alkyl-substituted selenenyl iodide was successfully synthesized through oxidative iodination of a selenol with N-iodosuccinimide by taking advantage of a cavity-shaped steric protection group. We have studied the effect of free radical generating agents on the mono-(ADP)-ribosylation of rat liver cytosolic proteins. Our results show that this post-translational modification, whose physiological significance is still unclear, is activated by lipid peroxidant agents via activation of cytoplasmatic mono-(ADP)-ribosyltransferases.
